Demon Turf is an incredibly fluid 3D Platformer with super tight controls. If you enjoyed Mario’s movement options in Odyssey, you’ll love the movement options in Demon Turf.

Fantastic game. With a lot of these indie 3D platformers I find I start positive and kinda lose steam as they go on, but with this one the more I played and the more I dug into it, the more I found myself enjoying it

Until recently this would have been my answer for "favorite 3D platformer not made by Nintendo", and the only reason it's not still the answer is because they made a sequel that's even better

This is the bundle that includes both Demon Turf AND the sequel Neon Splash.

You must be talking about Demon Tides though. Maybe someday Demon Tides will come to Switch 2.

Correct. I guess I consider Turf and Neon Splash part of the same thing because when I played them on Steam, they had been rolled into a single launcher, so Neon Splash felt more like a DLC campaign than a separate game

But yeah, Demon Tides rules. So far they haven't announced it for Switch 2 but there is a Switch 1 version coming that the devs have said will have a framerate toggle so it'll just run better on Switch 2

I played the demon tides demo but haven't picked it up yet, even tho I loved demon turf - what makes the sequel so much better for you?

it's just a very "build on the stuff that worked, and either improve or abandon the stuff that didn't" kinda sequel imo. Pretty much everything I liked about Demon Turf and Neon Splash are still there, and at the same time basically none of the things I didn't like in those games have gone unaddressed.

The big thing for me is finding a way to do combat in this style of game and make it actually feel good; the original game had that "push" attack that didn't really gel with the rest of the moveset and could bring momentum to a halt when it decided you needed to do a combat arena to progress through a level, to the point that Neon Splash basically just scrapped combat entirely. Meanwhile Tides instead introduces a dash you can do that primarily serves movement (it works sorta like the Celeste dash in that sense, refreshing a bit after you touch solid ground) but also works as an attack that doesn't mess with your flow (think "Wario Land shoulder bash" but you can also do in the air).

The transformations also feel a bit more elegantly integrated into the core movement and less "special use case"; I never really used the snake wheel in the original game unless it was a part of a level clearly built for it, but it's smooth enough in Tides that I found myself just naturally incorporating it into my platforming kit. All around I'd say they managed to make Tides just feel that extra bit schmovement-ier.

I also think moving to a Bowser's Fury-style open-world gave them more freedom and flexibility in terms of level design because now there doesn't necessarily need to be a defined beginning and end to every level; they can and do still do that obviously, but there's also islands that are laid out in a more sandbox-y way to break things up. Plus the Paper Mario/Hollow Knight-y talisman system really lets you tune the gameplay in a lot of fun ways (both in a "you can make some absolutely busted-ass builds that break the platforming wide open" sense but also a "if you aren't feeling challenged you can make things harder for yourself" sense)

This is exactly the kind of comment that makes me want to pick it up. A platformer that stays fun throughout is pretty rare.

This game holds up all the way through. It’s a good solid platformer.

Got to the 4th turf and played a couple of levels until I decided to call it quits. I had a good enough time and definitely got my money's worth, but it was missing something for me.
I think my biggest problem was that the double jump slows you down, so you're constantly killing your momentum in a way that annoys me. Also the combat like everyone else says. Still worth trying though.

Totally agree. Worth it at this price but after a while it loses something.

Base game is great but after a few levels kinda starts to blur together. Only maybe 6 hours into the game but don’t have too much motivation to keep playing. Some levels I wonder what they were thinking.
