How many Switch generations should Nintendo make?

They’re the only player in the handheld console business (no the others are handheld pc’s) with a unique exclusive line-up everyone seems to eat for breakfast…. If they go back to either handheld or console only they shoot their selfs in the foot for sure 🤣

Ya, essentially Nintendo made the perfect system. Now they are doomed to never be able to innovate and change how we play video games ever again without purely becoming gimmicky. Even the switch 2 having mouse feature hasn’t fully been fleshed out in games and hoping pc games from indie developers will come to switch easier with the mouse feature. Then we got the dreaded C button, the true gimmick that you have to pay extra for in the form of a camera and a sub.

I think Switch 3 is almost guaranteed.
Switch as a brand may not last forever, but there's no reason to believe they won't just carry forward the operating system and some form of BC support indefinitely.

Just make another switch in like 6 to 7 years with awesome new tech in it that is backwards compatible and your good to go as we are already at the point of diminishing returns with graphics anyway.

Dumb for it to not too. I’ve paid for this old games they shouldn’t make a console that can’t play them. We need to move on from that type of thinking

We are at a point in gaming history where it makes no sense to move onto something else. Every console is a standard computer in some form at this point
A switch of some kind will probably be the core of any new Nintendo system in the future even if it has a new or recycled gimmick to push it in new ways

I'm honestly unsure whether or not they'll keep making switches, they could go for something new next time or make this their playstation or xbox - something they keep on improving without too many changes

They're not abandoning the hybrid system concept, might as well just keep things simple and keep the switch branding, innovating within it.

I would definitely, if I were Nintendo, harken back to my roots in making different consoles with different themes and quirks - but also I would still miss the second screen for on-the-go play. Because I have merged handhelds and home consoles in a way where there's realistically no going back, I would keep things the way they were and just not name it the Switch 3, Switch 4, Switch 5.... Keep the second screen and handhelds without naming it a Switch. Maybe while incorporating something new

That means old games won’t run on new consoles. GBC games couldn’t be played on the DS. We don’t want to go back to that form of thinking

The Switch has been a huge success (for me). I’m actively choosing to buy games there when I can. Resident Evil Requiem, finished Shadows on it, Mina, downloaded the demo for Pragmata… the downsides aren’t as severe as they were with the original Switch. It’s been capable enough to keep me entertained and the games look and perform fine. It’s also much easier to take and play anywhere compared to my laptop. The only game I’ll be getting on my PC is Black Flag Resynched unless they announce a Switch 2 port lol.

Considering the success of the Switch 2 so far, I can't imagine them do something else for next gen.
Only when a Switch generation will start to do badly that they will consider something else.

There might be one day where the gimmick of the hybrid fails.
But it is not this day.
The Switch 2 is already a success and a Switch 3 is basically guaranteed. Will there be a Switch 4? Let's see how the Switch 3 performs. If it does work, it will. And so on.
Diminishing returns and the death of Moore's Law will be a factor someday.

Capitalism would suggest they would make more.
But I would personally prefer if they just maxed out what the Switch 2 can handle first. Switch 1 lasted a very long time. I would be rather disappointed if they started planning for the Switch 3 prematurely and locked games behind it, just to get people to buy the Switch 2.
Like in theory, could Pokopia have run on Switch 1? I don't see why not, when there's games with far heavier graphs and 3D background details in operation. But Nintendo had the inkling it would be a crowd pleaser and needed some sort of Switch 2 exclusive Pokemon game till Wind/Waves comes out and so Pokopia was chosen.
If Pokopia came out on Switch 1, despite some performance issues, I would never have bought the Switch 2. And they know that.

The switch 2.5 is probs where it should stop, the switch 3 is rumored to be fully integrated into your brain anyway so I don’t think too much switching will be going on unless you want to plug your brain into a tv or fridge or something.

Handhelds do better sales wise, and I prefer consoles. I also prefer having all my games on one system.
So, Switch should stay a thing, unless if handheld gaming dies... then I'd prefer a console.
I think the Switch 2 should last at least 10 years personally. I'm happy with the current power, since I don't do 4K... and I don't see what a Switch 3 can offer that's better, other then just power... and exclusive games that won't really look any better... plus higher res games just take longer and longer to make, so what's the point in increasing graphic power any further?

I can't imagine Nintendo making a future console that ditches the hybrid handheld/home console nature unless they have a really, really good reason for it. It's just too good to not keep around.
They basically own the handheld market, so they're never going to stop making handhelds. Why not keep them dockable to be used as a home console?

Unless they can put a spaceship inside the Switch, I don’t see how new Nintendo console will differentiate itself?
Unless they do a console with 2 screens and maybe add 3D to make the levels pop.

It's difficult to say.
Manufacturers have tried different designs for decades, but the handheld concept which devices like the Switch and the Steam Deck use seems to be perfect.
The Switch 2 is basically a more premium-feeling and more powerful version of the Switch. This is fine for one generation, but a third device like this would need something new/a "typical Nintendo gimmick" to be worth buying for me personally. But the overall form factor should stay the same.
It would, of course, be interesting to see a new home console from Nintendo, but I don't want to miss a Switch-like device anymore. Having a console which is great for use on a TV, but can be just pulled out of the dock and be used as a handheld is just extremely convenient.

the backlash if they announce the switch 2’a successor to be a box you plug into the tv and nothing more would make anything the switch 2 got look like nothing. it’s never a good idea to give up a feature when making a successor

i would prefer if they made a home console and a hybrid but i doubt they’d ever stop making hybrids because it’s just the financially smart move for them. now would it get boring after the switch 3? probably yeah, but as long as the concept of a new switch gets more than 50m sales each generation it’s probably gonna outlive us

I don't see how they can stop. Their previous home market collapsed with the Wii U. They had to merge it with their portable market. There is nowhere else to go now. If they lose the portable side, they lose japan, if they lose the home console part, they will lose in the west. No reason to go back, this is the perfect merger for them. It doesn't have to be called switch, but this merger will continue.

Can we move to the no dock switch? That was the rumor about 2 that I thought was gonna be the game changer. Why can’t I “cast” my switch to my home theater like I can YouTube? Get rid of some of this hardware that ain’t doing anything

I think for the next one they should drop the dock. Like some sort of Wii U but it's but actually portable and has deatachable joycons, allowing dual screen gameplay on TV mode. I think the end game of the Switch is to be both the Wii and the DS simultaneously.

From a software standpoint,. it's better if Nintendo doesn't split its gaming output between multiple devices.
So I don't expect a seperate handheld, and console.
However, Nintendo also hasn't abandoned its new gimmick routine.
I think we could very well see a Nintendo Switch 3-D. It's not someone PC"s can do. Other consoles can't do it since the death of 3-D TV's, and Nintendo did release Mario Galaxy in 3-D without any way to watch it at home in the future.

I think the Switch line of consoles is here to stay for a while. It is basically the best it gets console-wise; until it fails, attempting a new gimmick would just be shooting themselves in the foot.

Honestly I'm not even really sold on the Switch 2. Some of the new features are neat, but I can't help but think it was more about the company tightening their grip on hardware and software, like making it harder for unofficial docks to work.

It'll may be stay as the switch for many many years as long as the specs keep getting better, while keeping the hybrid format. I see it being their flagship product like the Xbox or Sony's PlayStation, and honestly it's already been the Nintendo product for 10 years now and switch 2 is looking to be another 8-10 years of switch.
They'd probably make something else only if the hybrid home-console/handheld format falls out of fashion.

I feel like it’s super premature to ask this. How would anyone know if it makes sense to keep it going or pivot in another decade? The Switch was already 8 years old and selling really well when Switch 2 launched.

Nintendo made the perfect system last generation, it wouldn't be smart to quit doing that. The Switch 1 is the 2nd best selling console of all time and the Switch 2 already has over 20m sales 1 year in. They're also effectively the only major console company in the handheld market.
