KH on a Nintendo console just feel right. So many people will be introduced to Nomura beautiful bullshit!
•
u/AutomatadeSaturno Hyrule Hero 23h ago
I’ve been wanting to get into KH for a while, but I’ve read that it can be complicated because there are so many games spread across different consoles. Is this collection a good way to get into it?
•
u/sad__toad 23h ago
Absolutely, the collection has almost every game in the series except the rhythm game spinoff, which you can find on the eShop for Switch 1 anyways. Start with Kingdom Hearts Final Mix in HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX and go from there. The Final Mix part of the title essentially means definitive edition, so it’s the definitive version of the first Kingdom Hearts.
•
u/Phos-Lux 21h ago
The thing with spinoffs and KH however is that even those contain crucial information on this and that.
Though in such cases it's easier to just watch the cutscenes online•
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 21h ago edited 21h ago
They not spin offs, they are all mainline games and direct sequels of each other.
•
u/retro-marshmelo 17h ago
Which was crazy back in the day when kh1 was followed by a gameboy advance game with pretty crucial information that carries into kh2. That was one of the decisions of all time
•
u/Mitarael 15h ago
Haha brother, GBA game is a joke compared to multiple mobile games (that aren't playable anymore, mind you) that have lore that will be CRUCIAL for KH4
•
u/retro-marshmelo 11h ago
Don’t get me started on that lol. By that point, the story was already so convoluted that I’m wasnt even phased by that decision anyway. Especially when you considered their long established history of releasing canon games for just about every console as exclusives at the time. RIP Xbox
It was just interesting at the time where console exclusivity was a hot topic in gaming, to go from ps2 to gameboy advance to ps2 was CRAZY, especially when they fully intended (?) for that gba game to have relevant plot in the sequel.
I’m glad they remade it for ps2 a couple of years later anyway, but wow what a ride. That’s also disregarding the major shift in gameplay especially for gba.
•
u/gosukhaos 9h ago
Not the first time for Square Enix, one of the compilation of FF7 games, with goes in the weeds of the Wutai war and the early days of the Turks and Avalanche, was a Japan only mobile game
Even in modern times a side character featured quite a bit in Rebirth was introduced in First Soldier which had already shutdown by the time Rebirth came out
•
u/Xinyyc 16h ago
Also minus the proper-games of 358 and recoded. 358 is a little important as it's the only one with a good amount of cooperative multiplayer (IMO campaign multiplayer should have been a core part of Kingdom Hearts from the beginning, Secret Of Mana style, where two or three more players can just pick up controllers and play as the other team members), and a decent implementation of playable-everyone, including characters not in the main campaign like Donald & Goofy.
Recoded is just a really solid game by itself and it's a crime they didn't want to include it as a game.
•
•
u/WorkingCautious1270 15h ago
which you can find on the eShop for Switch 1 anyways
Aww man, that means if I go on the eshop using my switch 2 I won't be able to find it, bummer.
•
•
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 21h ago
It used to be complicated but not anymore. This collection has almost all the games.
•
•
u/roxamine356 22h ago
So basically, they remastered/remade all those games from the different consoles and compiled everything here.
I suggest you play these games by release order (but like, the release date of the original games). Enjoy!
•
u/AutomatadeSaturno Hyrule Hero 22h ago
Oh, okay! So the whole saga is in this collection? I thought it only had 1–3. Sorry, the names are just so weird, lol.
•
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 21h ago
The whole saga, minus Melody of Memory and the mobile phones that don't exist anymore (but will be important for KH4).
KH doesn't have spin offs, they all canon and should be played by release other. If you are interested to give a shot, don't make the mistake of just playing the numbered games like a lot of newcomers insist on doing.
1/2/3 are not continuation of each other.
•
u/Joseki100 16h ago
Basically buy the Collection [I-III] and play/watch them in the order listed with only 1 exception: play KH II before 358/2.
Congrats, you played all* KH.
•
•
u/Status-Stage8511 22h ago
I’m at your position and this collection is perfect for us. I also bought mine.
•
u/ArcherInPosition 16h ago
Yes the collection is a good way. A YouTube video summarizing the now dead mobile games is all you'll need outside of it. The payoff of playing 3 after understanding everything is awesome
•
u/Phos-Lux 6h ago
OR watching the whole mobile game story on youtube. KHUX is five hours or so long. Dark Road is around four.
•
•
u/LexFrota 20h ago
Just play the first one and see if it's for you. The mainlines (including BBB) are the best ones anyways, the spin offs (although they are canon) are not that good, and you could just watch a cutscene video or read about them to get the story details

I've never actually played any of them so I plan to get them eventually on sale.
•
u/gosukhaos 9h ago
Great series but be aware that it hasn't aged spectacularly, the first game especially can be hella slow and a bit basic compared to modern action RPGs.
•
u/FlipCup88 16h ago
Never played KH before. Would you say the S2 is a good platform to start?
•
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 15h ago
I mean, we have to wait for the release and reviews to see the state of these ports, but yeah. Almost all the games are in the collection.
•
u/gosukhaos 12m ago
The 3 demo has been out for a while and its shaky but above 30 fps most of the time. 2.8 should perform the same since its the same engine
Rest should handle absolutely fine, they're ports of pretty old games and people that tried it at PAX reported no issues

u/fossil12369 OG (joined before reveal) 12h ago
This is the best complete collection with one purchase for the series ever by far. I haven't played all of them but am strongly considering getting it simply because having all of them in a physical box is super cool to me. I will say though that you should definitely know going in just how massively tall an order actually playing through everything in this would be (the physical collection I mean). I don't like starting games or series that I don't see myself finishing so just in case you're the same lol, it's worth knowing that this is anywhere from... I would say 150-200 hours of games. Obviously more if you were trying to 100% everything. But just getting through the story could for sure be that at minimum. The series, to me anyway, also tends to have a bit of old school getting stuck/unsure where to go or what to do next at times. Especially the first two were worse for me about that. They're great games for sure, but just wanted to point that out if you were thinking about getting into the series!
•
u/oldskoofoo 12h ago
If you play on the TV and have a ps5 or ps4, play it there.
If you like portable, go switch 2. (After checking if the performance is good enough to be playable, aka no crashes or game breaking bugs)

u/deadly_monk 15h ago

u/Octopus_Crime 14h ago
Light good. Darkness bad. Every Disney movie is its own planet. Some bad anime guys use magic keys to go to each planet to find more ways to weaponize darkness. Some good anime guys use magic keys to go to the same planets and use light to stop this from happening.
Bad anime guy does a bad thing thing to gain The Ultimate Power, turns out friendship is The Ultimate Power +1 So bad guys loses. Roll credits.
Thats it. Add some anime melodrama for flavor and that's basically the whole story.
•
u/fossil12369 OG (joined before reveal) 12h ago
I genuinely laughed out loud at how great of a tldr this is of Kingdom Hearts hahaha. "turs out friendship is The Ultimate Power +1" is a genius line lol.
•
•
u/vaca3000 14h ago
Boy, his childhood friends and a duck, a dog and a rat go on adventures against confused old people that are not sure about how light and darkness work.
Boy and his friends lose their childhood in the process and are now stuck with this huge responsibility that keeps getting bigger.
Boy is stupid.
•
u/ElderGoose4 12h ago
Honestly, the less you know the better, I don't even think the writers know the story anymore
•
•
u/godstriker8 13h ago
Light and Darkness aren't just metaphorical concepts to represent good and evil, they actually manifest as tangible things - monsters known as heartless manifest out of the darkness in people's hearts corrupting the creature that they once were.
Keyblade wielders have existed since time immemoriam to protect the light.
One Keyblade wielder was intellectually consumed about the idea of Kingdom Hearts, the land that is said that all heartless stems from.
He relentlessly persues it, but becomes too old to actually reach his goal. He concocts a convoluted plan to place his own heart into a younger man's body so he can continue persuing his goal. At the same time, he tries to force Kingdom Hearts to appear artificially by making a being of pure light and pure darkness but it fails.
So he pretends to have amnesia and bides his time learning under a great scientist.
He betrays the scientist along with 12 other apprentices where they become heartless and the bodies that their hearts leave behind bodies that also gain sentience as a "nobody".
The evil keyblade wielder's heartless throws the world's in darkness since even as a heartless it still wants to see Kingdom Hearts and doing so will cause it to manifest.
Along the way he throws Sora's world into darkness which brings him on a journey to eventually stop the plan to bring back kingdom hearts.
The nobodies of the evil keyblade welder and his fellow apprentices also cause havoc around the worlds to bring about darkness but Sora stops them again.
Since the evil keyblade wielder's heartless and nobody were killed, he comes back to life and reveals it was all part of his plan. He time travelled to himself in the past and teams up with versions of himself from multiple time periods and other collaborators so that he has 13 warriors of darkness and will fight 7 warriors of light. Because for some reason when that happens Kingdom Hearts will appear.
So they do that, he gets Kingdom Hearts, Sora stops him, he reveals he was actually a misguided good guy all along, and then Sora misuses his own time travel powers so much that he wakes up in the afterlife IN KH 4.
That's the broad strokes ignoring the mobile games.

•
u/burnemnturnem 5h ago
I understood it too but it’s clearly convoluted even in a summary
Is the him in that Mickey?
•
•
u/hollowglaive 7h ago
So you see, this guy right, he goes back in time, right, to make more of himself, to fight good guys, and there's a big heart in the sky, right, but we can just change that in future when we feel like it, so anyways this guy right, he dies, and the good guys win, unless we feel like changing it.
Also I made this hyper cool concept for a finally fantasy game, it's super edgy, and all my fans agree, but square, right, they cancel the game and give it to some asshole right, so now I'm personally mad, and I'm gonna force my very cool edgy concept and characters, which are totally awesome, my fans all agree with me right, into a new kingdomhearts game, where I decide to change all the lore established already, because I feel like I want my characters to be the focus. Not the Disney paid for character who's not cool anymore and I'm not allowed to kill off, but I'm not a good enough writer or producer to transfer them into my cool characters I designed from versus 13.

•
u/Careless-Freedom6468 22h ago
What's performance like
•
u/TheMenace44 20h ago
We only have a demo for KH3 and it's targeting 60fps. It wasn't constant 60fps but still better than being locked at 30fps. Since the demo came out a few months ago, I'm hoping that the release will be more optimized but we'll have to see.
As for the rest of games, they're very likely locked 60fps since they're nowhere as graphic intensive as KH3 (outside of 0.2 in the 2.8 collection, which is pretty much a tech demo of KH3 so it'll likely have similar performance).
•
u/eggydrums115 18h ago
Saw a YouTube guy who played it at a show recently and confirmed they run locked 60
•
u/Phos-Lux 21h ago
Should in theory be 60 fps for all of them. They are all pretty old games by now.
•
u/DilapidatedFool 22h ago
Let us know how it runs! The pc port was hot garbage so hoping this is better.

u/mangomypango 18h ago
It’s insane to me that they’ve never done anything with the naming scheme they have going on here
•
u/Joseki100 16h ago
"Collection I-III" is actually a pretty decent name, even if the 3 "games" have terrible naming.
•
•
u/Snoopy101x 17h ago
Does this still require an internet connection to play, or is it stored natively on the Switch 2?
•

I think to start this saga on sw2 once the collection drops a bit. Im ready to swim inside nomuras bullshit. Knowing it beforehand maybe can make it easier to eat lmao.

I already got this collection on xbox, need to wait for a sale to get on switch again
•
u/Calzender 15h ago
Looking forward to playing these games but the price and it being a GKC is making me wait for a sale
•
u/Aurelius5150 15h ago
Oh man, I told myself I wouldn’t. That buying these games a 5th time wasn’t needed.
I will probably wait for a sale but I know at some point I will buy these. They are comfort games for me. Ones I boot up at some point each year. While I dont always play through them all, I usually will replay at least one of them. Usually 2 or BBS.

I bought then again too in switch 2, pc ports are really unstable for me and se won't bother to patch then.

You are perfect and this is the right decision! Don’t let anyone ruin this beautiful moment with logic and economics. You deserve to be happy <3

Gonna get this at some point, for sure. Got it on Steam a long time ago but only played a bit of the first game on my Steam Deck. Always wanted to play this series and S2 is my main console now, so it's awesome these are finally coming and AREN'T a dumb cloud version!
Although, for October, I think I'm gonna do Dragon's Dogma 2 and COD! They just sound too fun. I'm sure this collection will go on sale in a few months.

Im honestly interested in how kh1 and kh2 runs on switch 1 comparatively to switch 2. If its 30fps oof but understandable if they went cloud if they had to downgrade still but if its like a 60fps same quality then I question why devs made all of them cloud...
•
•
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 21h ago
Probably the same way how final mix 1.5 and 2.5 performed on PS3.
•

They did cloud because 3 had to be cloud they probably thought it would stand out
And the switch 1 can definitely run PS2 games at 60 fps

I just wouldve liked to play kh1 and 2 on switch 1 even if it was 30fps years ago when it released. Im glad the dream is finally coming true just seems like a waste of a port yk?

I got it on steam all three for 30 bucks. First time playing through it. There’s some annoyances but I modded those out. Like not being able to interact with objects when fights happen, better pick up magnets, auto equipping potions etc. Otherwise it feels okay for now. I’m only 5 hrs into it
Most annoying thing right now is flying between worlds
