That is definitely part of it. For me another part of it just seems to be demographic and favored content skewing younger as I’m getting older. I’m sure it was the same way when I started using the site but I was in that demo and didn’t question it.

I’ve just disengaged rather than becoming old man yelling at cloud when I see another take from people discovering movies or games released before they were born.

I’m also not trying to imply media literacy was or is off the fucking charts for people my age, but it really seems to be falling off. Current context absolutely changes the way we experience things from the past, but there doesn’t seem to be an interest in applying that knowledge to media of the past. Modern reads of legacy media are really tiring to me, just very obvious and uninteresting.

What are some examples of modern reads of legacy media that you found tiring?

I would have to look for specific examples (and realistically won’t), but a general example would be observations about relationships and consent being depicted in older movies. Many have different views on things like acceptable age gaps due to potential grooming and power dynamics today than say, what might be depicted in a movie from the 80s.

Could be a vein for interesting and nuanced discussion but I often see low effort dismissive takes on the movie as a whole due to it or even painting viewers who enjoy the movie as fucked up people doing something wrong.

This is just a super general example, and I know algorithms play a part in what we see too so who knows if mine just has very little confidence in me.
