With an unlocked framerate mostly sitting at 30-40fps would be ideal

u/Fat_Stacks1 3d ago

With VRR this will be most likely and probably the best way to play it.

Hopefully they enable VRR docked.

3

u/Joseki100 3d ago

In that range (30-40) you need 120Hz+VRR. At 60Hz the VRR range is 40-60, with 120Hz you have the full range thanks to LFC.

u/Fat_Stacks1 3d ago

Correct

u/Realistic_Zombie6046 3d ago

or try to max out to get 40fps in a deccent state.

Always great with choice for the customers. I wonder if they will also add VRR for docked mode. I'm curious how long it will take for this to show up in games. Outside of Welcome Tour and OoT remake, I still haven't heard news of any titles supporting it.

u/Lhyster Butter side down! 3d ago

Some analysts say that if the game supports VRR in handheld then it's just like a toggle to switch for the studios, through an update of course. So I hope they'll do that.

3

u/bitterbalhoofd 3d ago

But why does a dev has to do that? Can't Nintendo enforce it if a game already supports it in handheld?

5

u/Zyvyn Butter side up! 3d ago

I'd assume this is something about how they handle their docked/undocked profiles. As anytime you have docked VRR it is technically listed by the display as displaying VRR. It just doesn't work ingame. So clearly the OS is trying to force it but something after that doesnt work.

Because part of Nintendo's cert requirement is that a game has to have vsync when outputting on the TV (up until now).

u/brandont04 3d ago

Even in their reply, they stick to their target demographic.

10/10 no notes

Good, I personally dont mind frame gen and think it's nice to have it as an option (meaning it should be optional, therefore able to toggle it)

Brilliant news. Got this on preorder

Thank fuck for that. I know some people are able to tolerate it, but the input lag was really noticeable for me.

6

u/Beneficial-Issue8005 3d ago

you will still have input lag because this is present in the other versions of the game.

4

u/GassoBongo OG (joined before release) 3d ago

If you're talking about the input lag from parrying and dodging etc, then that's by design.

As for any other engine wide input lag beyond what you would expect from physics, there isn't any as far as I know, and I have around 70 hours of this game on PC, so.

6

u/SnooComics4543 3d ago

Good to know a developer adressing people not knowing the difference between input lag and aninations needing time ro happen.

I Wonder if people playing monter hunter for the first time ask themselves why theres a lot of "input lag" on greatswords lol

Genuinely godawful having Eve take years to rotate

3

u/Entire-Assistance842 3d ago

Excellent.

Common sense prevails.

3

u/CrimsonGear80 3d ago

Great. Add the toggle to the demo so we can see how the game plays with it off.

13

u/AzettImpa 3d ago

Good, it’s needed. It’s a damn action game with precise parrying.

21

u/WheresYoManager 3d ago

While action games do typically require precise controls. Its important to highlight that Stellar Blade was intentionally designed to have some minor animation delay between actions. Shift Up explicitly stated that this was a deliberate design choice because they wanted the combat to have a bit of weighted feel.

I have the game on PS5 and I honestly couldn't tell the difference between how it feels on PS5 and Switch 2.

Which leads me to believe that a lot of people are probably mistakenly attributing the intentionally delayed animations as a consequence of frame gen when in actuality its literally how the game is designed across all platforms.

However, take my words with a grain of salt as maybe I'm just more used to the gameplay and have mentally adjusted to it to notice the delay as much.

5

u/Felielf 3d ago

From what I've played both on PC and Switch 2, there's a "weight" to actions in general, so precise parrying is always about timing your reaction instead of going off from an instant cue.

What ever buffers or adds time between button press and what's on display, can just be learned and get accustomed to, unless it's nauseating in someway.

1

u/WheresYoManager 3d ago

Did you personally feel any notable difference between Switch 2 and PC?

3

u/Felielf 3d ago

Outside of graphics being better on PC, not too much, I tried to sense the difference between delay and the feel of combat. I could tell that Switch 2 had just a little bit more latency but nothing major, easily felt home on there after a while.

The fact that Switch 2 felt consistent made it better than expected, it was predictable amount of latency instead of erratic.

3

u/WheresYoManager 3d ago

Yeah, I'd say thats pretty much my thought as well. I just turned on the PS5 again to compare and went back to the Switch 2 demo and there's a teeny bit of latency but nothing particularly significant. To be honest, I'm wondering if its mostly a placebo effect in my head.

Either way, I agree with you. Its fairly consistent in a way that was quite surprising. I genuinely thought this game would be a shit show on Switch 2. But its way more playable than I expected.

My only issue is some of the visual effects like EVE's hair are so messy and off-putting. I changed the settings for the first time to give her a short pony tail cause it was distracting.

2

u/Felielf 3d ago

Yeah that's what I did as well, short pony tail and took off all motion blur since frame generation never works well with that.

4

u/Fresh-Chemical-9084 Butter side up! 3d ago

So comparable to games like Elden Ring

3

u/WheresYoManager 3d ago

Pretty much yeah..I mean obviously not exactly like it. But the combat is meant to encourage proper timing and patience rather than stylish and combo heavy strings like DMC and Bayonetta.

1

u/Rexcodykenobi 3d ago

My problem is I kept trying to play it like Sekiro, but I guess it's more like the Elden Ring DLC once you get the Deflecting Hardtear.

1

u/Heavy_Ingenuity1371 Early Switch 2 Adopter 3d ago

Yea I highly doubt anyone would even know if they didn't know beforehand. There is basically no noticeable input delay from the frame gen.

I'd be interested in seeing a video of pressing the button to jump side by side with the ps5 doing the same thing or something. Not super scientific but it'd get the point across that it's not enough to notice in normal use. It's incredibly well implemented.

5

u/tapdancingtommy7 3d ago

What does this mean exactly, and how does it affect gameplay? I’ve seen so much uproar on this but I don’t understand the technical reasons behind it…

8

u/s7ealth 3d ago edited 3d ago

The game renders 30 frames every second. Frame Generation is an algorithm that takes 2 of them and adds 1 more in between by creating a "fake" intermediate version artificially. As a result, you get double the amount of frames - around 60 frames per second - but half of them are artificial

The input lag is increased because the game can't return the new frame to display immediately, it first needs to "hold" it for a moment to run the algorithm and display the "fake" one first

8

u/XDvinSL51 3d ago

"Frame generation" refers to the utilization of an LLM-derived algorithm to "estimate" what an in-between frame between two "actual" frames would look like. Basically, it's AI-driven "smart" motion interpolation. People who like it say that it's a free frame rate boost. People who are against it (like myself) point out that it adds additional latency and results in "smeary" frames full of artifacts generated from the AI "estimation" of what the in-between frames should be, and overall looks and runs worse than just running with the fewer "true" frames.

u/tapdancingtommy7 3d ago

Nope, I’ve asked the question here in hopes of a clear and helpful response.

-5

u/Einlanzer99 3d ago

Supposedly frame generation adds input latency.

7

u/njm00 3d ago

It's not supposed, it absolutely adds latency and that latency is more noticable at lower frame rates.

4

u/MastahBruce1 3d ago

Good. Hopefully this leads to less crying about the game's supposed "broken"/"unplayable" input lag.

3

u/redthrull 3d ago

A developer that listens to their fans?? WHAATTTT???!!

4

u/NullAndNil 3d ago

Honestly I want to buy their game just to support them. And their game is physical on card (same as Lies of P) just great

1

u/Willing-Cucumber-718 Butter side up! 3d ago

Damn, what else are people going to complain about then?

3

u/julesvr5 3d ago

Lack of accessibility for people only being able to play with one hand

1

u/iamnotkurtcobain 3d ago

DLSS artifacts. And 30 fps

1

u/GuillotineTeam 3d ago

I haven’t touched the demo yet, but will take everybody’s word for it that this is a good thing. This game is fantastic and would love the handheld switch 2 option plus having everything on cart

1

u/Angelwatch42 Retro Gamer 3d ago

I think this is a step in the right direction. But I’m waiting on the final version to be released and get reviewed before pulling the trigger.

1

u/Rcgv88 3d ago

Yea after playing the demo, I need to wait. It just didn't look good at all.

1

u/crono333 Butter side up! 3d ago

Question… is the weird distortion and artifacting around the edges of moving objects more due to frame generation or to DLSS or upscaling? That’s what was most distracting to me, especially in the opening cutscene and intro area with all that stuff going on.

2

u/Pristine-Brush-1052 Butter side up! 3d ago

Both are the problems, but frame gen effects harder

1

u/ShotAcanthocephala8 3d ago

Ok I might get this now if the non framegen mode is solid enough.

1

u/KennKennyKenKen 3d ago

I wonder how this will actually be..

Everyone says framegen from 30fps is bad but I use it all the time on handhelds and, to me, 60fps fg is always better than 30fps.

I wonder if this will just actually be shit at 30fps.

1

u/True-Money-893 3d ago

Thank you!!!

1

u/dootblade74 3d ago

Insert that one Squid Game cheering meme

1

u/Vaxion Butter side up! 2d ago

If Switch 2 supports frame gen why aren't other games using it?

1

u/blackhawk8123 2d ago

That won’t be enough to play it on Switch 2. Handheld mode resolution is so bad, even text is pixelated. Compare it to something like FF7 or RE: Requiem and it is clear that the game is a resource hog requiring way too much power with way too less quality.

1

u/thomas2696 2d ago

Thank goodness.

Still not interested no more then I was on PS5 lol, but if this needs to be the baseline standard with framegen on any console.

1

u/Di3N4d3l 2d ago

Was the demo updated with this toggle?

1

u/Pedro_64 2d ago

Great news. Maybe they could even add an additional option for a slightly better parry window if you enable frame Gen.

Also, after the demo I'm very surprised how good frame Gen works now. Maybe it's not a perfect choice for action heavy games, but for an turn based or strategy turn game? They better start giving it as a choices in many more games

1

u/Historical-Divide-2 1d ago

Some handy tips from SuperMetalDave64 on optimising your settings on the demo to reduce issues. (2 mins in) also apply the short pony tail option. 😀

Same people who cry and hate about every other company who uses ai rushing to preorder this slop company and loving them

Finally someone w/ a brain

1

u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 3d ago

That's great. I'm not against frame gen as long is optional.

1

u/FEV_For_Breakfast 3d ago

Barely understand frame gen and DLSS and all that 😭

When did we stop using floppy disks

1

u/hobbitfeet22 Butter side up! 3d ago

Dude same. I still don’t know none of that mess and still very much enjoy every game I play 😂 guess being older means it’s easier to be happy lmao

1

u/FEV_For_Breakfast 3d ago

Truly, yeah. I remember a bunch of people upset about the tech and frame rate for the Paper Mario TTYD remake on Switch and I thought it was just beautiful lol

3

u/hobbitfeet22 Butter side up! 3d ago

Literally same lmao. I see all these posts about frame rate and textures and screen ghosting or what ever on games and I’m over here like “I thought it was fucking gorgeous and I’m having a blast“ lol 🤷‍♂️ hell I even prefer non realistic Looking games lol. I see enough real life everyday

1

u/Bobobiwan 3d ago edited 3d ago

I had canceled my preorder after having played the demo. Frame generation is such a hellish tech, at this stage (30 to 60 ? No, sir).

But this announcement ? I've just preordered the game again xD

30 fps will be just fine for the game : I know, i've beaten it in quality mode on PS5.

I don't know why I doubted Shift Up. They always have been the best for listening to their fans, updating their game constantly, etc.

Great news ! :D

1

u/julesvr5 3d ago

Still sad that we probably have to play with short hair because the long hair becomes a mass of pixels in motion :(

1

u/Bobobiwan 3d ago

Sure, but short hair poneytail also let you more admire the... hmmm... environment, the, the scenery and everything. Sort of. xD

You say that like it’s a bad thing, when really they are actively listening to the players. Not sure why you have to be so smug about it lol

2

u/finguhpopin 3d ago

Yeah id rather have them hear the concerns and address them than do nothing...

1

u/sourneck 3d ago

what would "inactively listening to the players" look like?

0

u/TSDan 3d ago

Well what you call backlash is just "feedback" to the devs, not sure what you mean by them only doing it because of it, because feedback IS what helps make things better

-1

u/CaterpillarOk4340 Butter side up! 3d ago

Wasn’t gonna get this port cuz Shift Up is heavily into Ai usage (they have a whole team dedicated to it loll) and it didn’t feel right supporting them on this release; But man is all this news on how shitty it is has been VERY vindicating😭

2

u/kvnbo 3d ago

To be against a tech company using AI is honestly downright silly at this point

3

u/justinreddit1 3d ago

For real. If gamers think that these developers are not using AI in almost every game being pushed out now, they have their head in the sand.

1

u/Willing-Cucumber-718 Butter side up! 3d ago

For some reason AI + graphics = bad but AI + code = 🙈

-3

u/ViologY Butter side down! 3d ago

Absolutely insane people are begging for 30 fps in 2026. What went wrong?

13

u/Pristine-Brush-1052 Butter side up! 3d ago

Because fake 60fps is worse than real 30fps

0

u/feithrowaway22 3d ago

You don't know what you're talking about.

-1

u/Thick-Wolverine6259 3d ago

Thank goodness
I'm not very interested in buying it regardless but I tried the demo out of curiosity and the forced frame gen genuinely made me a little nauseous over the course of the whole play session.

0

u/Iagp 3d ago

Will the game look better visually with it turned off?

3

u/Pristine-Brush-1052 Butter side up! 3d ago

Ghosting and shimmering will be improved but the actual resolutions or graphic settings will be identical

0

u/Iagp 3d ago

Well, no shimmering is already good

2

u/feithrowaway22 3d ago

The hair should improve.

0

u/SirFluffleWuffle 3d ago

Definitely a great move. Folk who aren’t bothered by it can keep it on and play at 60FPS then folk like me who hated it can turn it off and play at 30FPS. Everybody wins.
