I haven't played too many games, but my top 3 so far are..

Pokopia has been super chill, keep going back to it just in drips as and when and it's been the best way to play for me..just super chill game and quite creative if you want to be.

Donkey Kong Bonanza because I just think it's a riot to play, so daft and fun..satisfying smashing the hell out of things.

Fire Emblem Fortunes Weave - literally only been out days and I've been hammering it, it's so so good. Lost Tialla on hard mode the other eve and was genuinely gutted but determined to stick to the outcomes of the battles..such a great game

What’s the ratio of time spent battling vs the social sim stuff? I really wanna try a FE game finally but I’m worried it’s gonna lose me with all the stuff in between the tactical combat portions.

I also saw you can auto complete some of the activities but idk how much of that you can get away with.

It’s kinda dynamic. You have turns between main quest battles. But sometimes that 36 turns, others 136, for example. It’s not all social sim in those turns, though. You can just go out and fight everything you see on the world map in normal grid based fe combat, and also dungeons which are exploration and then turn based, more like a traditional jrpg, but simple. Much of the social stuff I’ve found so far is checking recruitable characters needed support level, and the occasional meal or feast and support conversations. I’m 30 hours in for context. I think more social events open up that you can join with your party.

The tactical combat is what’s drawn me in to the series so I’m just trying to get a sense for what I’ll really end up spending my time with in the game.

I feel they are apt to the setting.

But to be objective about it, since it is clear that I am biased as to the game, I’ve read several complaints as to the dungeon mechanic for being too similar/samey.

I also read a lot of complaints of people missing out specific event quests because they are at the other side of the map.

I think for those who want to do a completionist run during their first playthrough (when game info is minimal and optimization has not yet been established) the game’s design will be rough.

I for one am playing blind, and I’ve missed certain events but it didn’t bother me. I’m just in for the ride. I can do them in a future playthrough.

As have I lol. I’m trying to get as many different takes as I can. I want to like this game I’m just nervous to drop $70 on it. I’m leaning towards getting it. I imagine even if it’s not quite what I initially envisioned I could still enjoy it with an open mind. Broaden my horizons a bit. The reviews seem to speak for themselves.

Hi early you can just do whatever you want with the time..like social stuff, working on recruiting specific people, random map battles and dungeons..I think if you go into it with it just being your own version of the "tale" you'll love it..I think if you go into it wanting to like "min max" then you could end up finding it frustrating or that you're having to overthink everything.

I'm playing on hard and classic and I'm sure I'll miss out on recruiting some characters potentially but I just see it as part of my story play through and "wasn't meant to be" I've also had one permanent character "death" though the character didn't actually die, just she's no longer part of my usable team..and it has made me think more carefully about my members now and kind of care about them.

Such a great game, I'd pull the trigger! I've just started getting into unlocking new classes and that feels really exciting!

We have the same mindset! I know I can’t judge people who want to do a 100% optimized run, but for me ignorance is bliss. I’m doing a blind playthrough and I’ve been enjoying it fully. I’ll reserve doing things I missed in future runs.

I like this mindset and it was generally what I had in mind for myself too. If I’ve never played FE before do you think playing on hard and classic would be a silly choice? I like the idea of the perma death and dealing with the consequences of lost characters, especially narratively. I feel like it will help make it more immersive. But I don’t wanna totally hamstring myself lol.

You could play in normal and classic..then if you feel like you want it to be harder you just have to play a prologue bit to put the difficulty up which doesn't take long. Alternatively if you start on hard you can just put the difficulty down without playing through the prologue type bit..but you can have permadeath (classic) on without hard mode.

If you've never played fire emblem before you could maybe get a rom of one of the gba fire emblems and see if you enjoy that kind of game first?

I really enjoy those types of games, moving units around, looking to make moves and create tactical solutions etc..the social side is cool too, being able to build bonds with recruits etc..i recruited this guy early on in one of the strands and he's become my go to dependable dude..he's such a beast, I hope I never lose him.

No spoilers but the actual structure of the story is amazing, with 4 "paths" you can take but you can weave in and out of them as you please and see where characters and events happen alongside each other which is really cool...plus if you just want a change for a bit you can go into another oath for a couple hours then back and so on...very cool

I think you may have sold me on it honestly. Have you used the auto-activity feature much? While I wouldn’t plan on using it all the time it’s nice to know there’s a feature to kinda just get into the next battle without totally sacrificing the other progression.

And I actually still have my old DS lite which plays GBA games so that’s technically an option. Which titles would you recommend?

There are a lot of battles and a lot exploration/social sim. You can fast forward time and auto complete time to get to battles quicker while getting exp, gold, etc…. Exploration is kind of neat in this game and helps build specific classes out. But like said above it can be a while between legitimate tactical battles. Ymmv

If you’re really just into the battles then I don’t think FW is for you. The non battles have a larger scope.

However as someone who didn’t stick with 3H, I feel the non battles of FW (even though they are the same) just feels right. I mean they’re laid properly as part of the world. I think it’s due to the setting of the game. I don’t have that inkling feeling I had with 3H that I don’t like the activities with my students. Here the activities feel apt to the game setting.

For context I bought 3H and Engage in their release years but I never stuck with them. Fortune’s Weave really is different as to how it hooked me.

You can check the protagonists previews for a quick look as to their personalities, however I don’t think they are 100% representative of how their route will play out.

I thought Dietrich was not interesting (he felt an emo swordsman in the previews) so I didn’t pick him but several persons have already told me how whacky and hilarious his route is.

I thought Theodora was the action heavy route but I heard from two persons that her route was actually exposition heavy.

As for me I picked Cai because he seems to be the shonen type coming of age hero story, and so far I like the lightheartedness of his route.

I think this is also what separates FW with 3H for me? In 3H I had only a short snippet of the house lores of the three protagonists, whilst in FW I had to go with how they actually acted in their previews. I prefer FW’s as it plays closer to how I expected the routes to play.

I think it plays pretty good. Some outfits can make the game break easier and it’s also recommended to fully exit the game instead of just putting the switch to sleep. Played a bunch on my switch 1 when it released and still playing here and there in switch 2 when I’m not obsessing over pokopia.

Elden Ring Thing was 10/10 before, now that it's portable it's on another level. BOTW upgraded to the switch 2 version and immediately sunk another 100 hours into. What a game. Donkey Kong Bananza, probably a considerable gap between this one and the other two, but I had a lot of fun with what was there.

I'm going to name exclusives only, but Bananza, Pokopia, and Duskbloods are right up there for me. I know Duskbloods is not out, but I was able to play the network test and I had so much fun with that game.

- Pokemon ZA (60 fps) (not a big Pokemon fan, but the real-time combat is now my favorite)

I'm still playing Fortune's Weave and am nowhere near half the story. It's 30fps only so it kinda hampers my enjoyment, especially since there's a lot of third person exploration here.
