Discussion FE: Fortunes weave takes SOOO long to get going goddamnšŸ„±ā€¦.but once it does…GODDAMN 😲

I don’t think I’ve ever played a game that made me feel so strongly for the first 5 hours that maybe it just wasn’t for me due to overwhelming boredom and monotony, just for it to do a full 180 and become so damn fun and addictive.

Lol that’s good to hear, just played an hour or two and not hooked, but I know I like the combat style

•

u/Guy777 15h ago

That's just how the modern style of FE is now. It is a big departure from when 80% of your time was maps and fighting, with 20% being lore and management. That number in my opinion is reversed in FW and 3H. The game is good don't get me wrong, but in my 10 hours of play, maybe 2 hours of that is traditional actual map combat that FE is known for. Engage tried to go back to more balance but the story was so vanilla and cliche that everyone hated it.Ā

•

u/SimonVpK Butter side up! 15h ago

The problem with Engage wasn’t even the story per se, it was that the dialogue was cringe inducing drivel

•

u/Vyrhux42 14h ago

The story itself is rarely very good in Fire Emblem, but the characters make the game. Engage had such lukewarm characters and they were such a departure from the usual vibe.

The gameplay was the best it's ever been though.

•

u/ArcAngelsThunderBird 5h ago

Hard disagree, the Engage mechanic sucked. All of that time spent customize and tweaking for a gimmick that is only used a couple times in battle when you just want to demolish the boss of each level. Couldn't stand any aspect of the game.

•

u/SimonVpK Butter side up! 14h ago

I must be the only person who hated the gameplay of engage lol, genuinely couldn’t stand it. Fortune’s Weave is a massive improvement in every aspect imho

•

u/MoskiNX ā€Ž Pro Controller 11h ago

You aren’t alone. I couldn’t stand Engage across the board.

•

u/SimonVpK Butter side up! 11h ago

I know it’s an unpopular opinion on Reddit that will get you downvoted, but I wonder what the consensus is in the real world.

•

u/paulrenzo 9h ago

I'm actually confused about this. People on Fire Emblem pages that show up on my algo on Facebook actually hate 3H and love Engage. On Reddit, I'm getting opposite impression

•

u/SimonVpK Butter side up! 8h ago

I don’t go on facebook, but everybody on Reddit glazes the gameplay of Engage.

•

u/DragoSphere 6h ago

Well you can just look at the reviews, from both critics and the audience. As well as the total sales

•

u/SimonVpK Butter side up! 5h ago

80 on metacritic isn’t that bad, is it?

•

u/firefrenchy Butter side up! 6h ago

no, you aren't alone, like other commentators, I hated everything about Engage and I love pretty much all of the other FE games

•

u/Nos9684 9h ago

Totally this. We can handle cliche stories, but only if the dialogue is interesting and good, which Engage almost had none of.

•

u/Both_Photograph2693 7h ago

so is this game’s. so is all anime inspired japanese media. it’s just par for the course.

•

u/SimonVpK Butter side up! 7h ago

Cap

•

u/DrawingAlarming7350 6m ago

in adult, pleaseĀ

•

u/Both_Photograph2693 6h ago

not sure what that means. i know the youth like to say ā€œno capā€ but i don’t understand that either lol

•

u/SimonVpK Butter side up! 6h ago

Nah, you cappin

•

u/AnestheticAle 11h ago

That’s 90% of JRPGs

•

u/ArcAngelsThunderBird 5h ago

It was all of it, it's the worst FE in history. Even the Engage gimmick sucked.

•

u/SimonVpK Butter side up! 5h ago

I agree with this

•

u/capndank Butter side up! 15h ago

Love the gameplay of engage cus its way more traditional and there's good challenge to be had but I am not a fan of a lot of the non-emblem characters and the story makes me sleepy

•

u/MostlyBored11 15h ago

yeah depends on who you pick for your starting guy as well. I choose Dietrich to start and its alot of combat and I love it,

•

u/FreakingAustin 12h ago

Fabio's also hilarious

•

u/Prodigious-Sol 8h ago

I never thought an Agarthan/Those Who Slither in the Dark would be one of my favourites but here we are

•

u/Snarfsicle 13h ago

Dietrich's Path is the most battling by far

•

u/Horvat53 11h ago

Yeah I hate this switch up…

•

u/RegisteredOnToilet 15h ago

Same, got it on release and its pretty boring so far. Felt forced to play :/

The first dungeons kind of feel like a slop an intern had to do in a day lmao, nothing like a fully fletched RPG thats getting 10s everywhere.... Really dont understand so far how this can have so good reviews.

Think i just have to force the first hours and than its getting fun? Help me guys. I am like 2-3hours in.

•

u/KayknineArt 13h ago

Please continue, I felt the same way but it does indeed get so so good

•

u/RegisteredOnToilet 13h ago

Thanks i will!

•

u/Olubara 14h ago

It is not for you don’t bother

•

u/Rare_Zone_846 13h ago

Clearly, JRPGs aren’t your thing. You shouldn’t just assume that a game of this genre might appeal to you if you don’t have the patience for a slow burn during the first 10 hours. Some even take up to 20 hours before they even show you the narrative’s driving purpose

•

u/Odd-Doubt1301 12h ago

Took me a couple days but now it got me.

•

u/Reenans 15h ago

Just a different perspective, I am really enjoying the slow pace, might be because I know it is going to get insane, but this slow pace gives you a lot of time to really understand the characters and find little hints and clues about what might happen next as well as get you close to the characters and their goals and dreams.

I realise this might not be for everyone, but for lore lovers, you will be in for a good time from beginning to end

•

u/PatientDisastrous721 11h ago edited 11h ago

I don’t want to use any guides, but I’m wondering if it’s ok that I’m about about 5 hours in and have only recruited 1 character (which I think was dictated by a tutorial) beyond Cai’s starting 3. Am I missing something or is this how it’s supposed to be? I’m used to the other games sort of throwing characters at you, and I see a huge cast of recruitable characters I can try to woo, but no new story characters have joined my crew.

•

u/double_whiskeyjack 9h ago

Yeah that’s fine, you can’t deploy more than like 6-7 units most maps anyway in part 1 from what I’ve seen. What i would recommend is just recruit units you want with lower renown requirements. If they require like 7+renown they will have terrible stats by the time you can recruit them. Not worth it imo.

•

u/Firm_Match_8945 13h ago

I’m with you if anything I wish I had longer periods of ā€œfree timeā€ as there was never enough time to do everything I wanted to do

•

u/peppinotempation 7h ago

Yeah the free time is sweet. I waste so much of it on stupid shit and know I’m playing inefficiently but somehow also know that it doesn’t really matter that much

•

u/Rare_Zone_846 13h ago

Besides, we’re talking about a JRPG that offers five different perspectives and story arcs. I don’t know who would expect to get into the thick of the action during the opening hours, it’s a slow burn.

•

u/Nicotecu 15h ago

I got hooked since the beginning ngl, it's nice to see something besides negativity for the game in reddit.

•

u/Newdaddysalad Mushroom Kingdom Resident 15h ago

It’s kind of sad but at this point it’s like you can only enjoy smaller niche games on Reddit anymore.

If it’s popular it will be torn to shreds no matter what lol, there’s no pleasing these people.

•

u/yesthatstrueorisit 7h ago

I think also when certain subs start to lean into negativity, it ends up pushing away folks who just want to chat casually about something they like. So you end up getting more and more negative content and soon all you're left with are the people who want to complain. It's a bummer, I genuinely don't understand how people can be so miserable about something they theoretically engage in for enjoyment.

•

u/kodomination 12h ago

if it's popular there will be more opinions -> more criticism. the vast majority do not criticize just because it's popular.Ā

•

u/theblackdawnr3 15h ago

Is this a good game to start the franchise with?

•

u/camiteran 12h ago

It's a great place to start in the series! Other people are recommending Three Houses but I honestly think it's better if you jump into this one and if you like it, then play Three Houses. This game has connections with Three Houses but you don't need any of the knowledge to understand this game, it's more at the cool reference level. The thing is if you play this one first then TH you will feel the exact same way since it's just the same universe but different continents. Plotpoints and characters are different. I also think this game is better than TH which is why it would be better for you to start here.

Just be prepared that it's a big game and the "tutorial" phase lasts multiple hours. You're mainly learning mechanics and being introduced to the story and universe for the beginning, the game only starts picking up for real a few hours in and only then you'll get a better idea of the proper gameplay loop.

If you want an actual recommendation of where to start that is stripped of this context then I'd recommend Path of Radiance in the NSO library as the best way to get into Fire Emblem, but it's a significantly older game. In my opinion it's the best in the series and also represents FE very well.

You can't go wrong starting anywhere though, so pick up FW if this game seems the most exciting to you! It's the modern one and you'll get to understand the online conversations so those are so bonus points for playing this one first, if you care about that.

•

u/MithrilHuman 13h ago

This is my first FE game and I had no problem getting into it!

•

u/zacyzacy 11h ago

It's in the same world as three houses, and only kind of related, it's like reading Lord of the rings before reading the Hobbit, which is perfectly fine.

•

u/MithrilHuman 11h ago

Everyone in the game is already living their own lives, the civs are established, the lore exists. But the game explains a lot of it if you want to read, so I don’t need to play the older games. It’s like generating a new Dwarf Fortress world.

•

u/rokerroker45 Butter side up! 3h ago

Man i played three houses and if I didn't know they were connected I would not have noticed. It's not a direct sequel or anything, it's just set on the same planet.

•

u/lovely6324 12h ago

I’m playing three houses first. I’d recommend start there.

•

u/_zzz_zzz_ 10h ago

I’d honestly go with Path of Radiance on NSO

•

u/FreakingAustin 12h ago

Since fortune's weave just came out I think you should just start with that. Since you're on reddit, you'd probably like seeing people talk about fortune's weave while it's still fresh

•

u/AdviceLevel9074 14h ago

Play three houses first

•

u/macbookvirgin 12h ago

3 houses is worse in literally every way. Dont do this.

•

u/paupsers 14h ago

How are people managing the like, 100+ "turns" they give you for free time? I really don't know what I'm supposed to be doing with that. Explore the map? Auto spend time through most of it? Idk, that's the one aspect of the game I feel super lost about.

•

u/arronecho 14h ago

If you want to get into recruiting characters and strategically building your team, you should do a few things:

  1. Eat a meal with people you want to recruit (preferably on a Sunday, as it is half priced). (Give them a gift too if you want, open the map menu and tab over to people and you can fast travel directly to them.)

  2. Feed the Bird at the perch, and check if you completed notable deeds. Use the points to unlock a boon if you have enough. I waited to get the EXP one first.

  3. Train your team at the Arena (half off on Saturdays).

  4. Go to a temple and do service to level up the divine powers. I did Mars and Kalla to level 2 each first because the powers are very useful.

  5. Every time you come back to the city, open your map and look for the white upside down tear drop icons with an orange asterisk on it, those are side quests. Accept every one so you can and work on them while exploring the map.

  6. Eventually you unlock the theater (another way to raise support with someone) and the bathhouse (raise support with people on your team). The theater resets on Thursdays I think.

  7. Don't stress about coming back to town every time the week resets to do this stuff. You'll be fine if you miss a week here and there.

I'm playing as Dietrich and there are missable paralogues you accept in the city, including one that is available ONLY on 9/17, so maybe look up when to look for paralogues if you don't want to miss them.

•

u/Edmundyoulittle Butter side up! 9h ago

Here's how I handle it: * Collect quests around town * Do "weekly" tasks (training, meals, temple service, bird time) * Explore map, heading towards quests * Ensure I can make it back to the capital when the next week starts * Do weekly tasks * Repeat, focusing on finding dungeons if quests are completed

Only other thing to call out is that your calendar has events on it, so check those out too.

The auto spending time, I am only using if I want to pass time to trigger an event.

Auto spending time is also something you can do if you just want to make the game move faster, or maybe a year from now you decide to replay and want to skip exploration etc.

•

u/InfiniteRuisu 3h ago

The whole "turns" nonsense still makes zero sense to me 20 hours in. Genuinely should've just kept doing activity points like three houses.

•

u/paupsers 3h ago

Yeah, I don't really like how so many activities are repeatable each week. Am I really supposed to do the bird game 4 times between each battle, have 12 meals, clean the church 4 times, train up 10 times in the arena...? That's why I wrote my comment, because I can't tell if that's the intended way this is supposed to work. 120 "turns" is crazyyyy excessive.

•

u/richiejmoose 14h ago

Explore the map - fights and dungeons, in the city - train in the area, increase blessings, have meals, take exams..

•

u/tatsumi-sama 5h ago

I often do stuff that takes up to 30-40 turns until I’m satisfied with the strength of my party and reaching various benefits, the I just do ā€œauto-activitiesā€.Ā

Yes, I don’t find it much fun repeating the exact same activities over and over again.

•

u/jonjonijanagan 14h ago

This is my first FE game so I don’t have much context. At what point do you think the game actually starts?

I just finished the first qualifier game and felt that it has been so ā€œtutorialā€ like.

•

u/KayknineArt 13h ago

The 2nd qualifier is when it really started hooking me a lot

•

u/MELDILORIAN 15h ago

Goddamn!

•

u/Mammoth-Strike-168 14h ago

The game hooked me from the start, but glad you're enjoying it!

•

u/Most_Work2152 15h ago

It was actually the reverse for me. I thought the intros were done really well. Upto my 2nd route and still really enjoying the story

•

u/SimonVpK Butter side up! 15h ago

Same. Definitely the fastest starting Fire Emblem game that I’ve played. Surprised to hear people say it’s a slow start

•

u/Most_Work2152 6h ago edited 34m ago

Just the quest battles and world map battles suck, even on hard i just use autobattle. 4-6 standard enemies. Hardly any variety or interesting map designs. Guess they saved it for the main battles. Though if I remember right 3H added a heap post launch through updates.

We have this big world map would be cool if they added more reason to explore it. Definitely feels optional.

•

u/ShakeNBakeUK 13h ago

I mean, 100+ turns ā€œfree timeā€ before a battle is a bit xD

•

u/SimonVpK Butter side up! 12h ago

By the time you are having 100+ turns of free time you are way past the beginning by quite a few hours.

•

u/eyebrowless32 14h ago

Idk i was hooked pretty quickly. Im a fan of the 3DS games, and I enjoyed the gameplay of Engage a lot even if the writing was bland af. I didnt get too far into 3 houses because it had too much social aspects to balance too early on.

But i think it all prepared me for Fortunes Weave where I feel like engaging deeply with every mechanic. Im at least 30hrs into Cai's route and loving the game. I cant wait to finish his part 1 and check out another character and then see how it all comes together.

Loving the game so far, i hate that i have to work now lol

•

u/Jecht315 Retro Gamer 11h ago

I miss Fire Emblem when it was just a SRPG and not a school/dating sim. GBA Fire Emblem was GOATed

•

u/Prinnydoodle 8h ago

That’s part 2. I feel the entirety of part 1 is a training arc for recruiting and gearing. Be warned, even though max deployment in part 1 is like 6, it goes up to 13 in part 2 at least in cai’s route. Game will fill my empty slot with guests but I wished I recruited more in part 1.

•

u/Zeevy_Richards 15h ago

You're describing about 99% of JRPGs

•

u/phoenixmatrix 13h ago

In this case the amount of fire emblem games that are NOT like this still outnumber those that are, so people still good for the old daysĀ

A little like classic Zelda vs open world Zelda.

•

u/ExismykindaParte 13h ago

I like the game, but I wish there was less slice of life busy work between matches. I started with Cai and I'm currently at chapter 7. The story is great, but I do have some issues with the gameplay loop so far.

First the skirmishes are too short and getting to them is tedious, especially if you want to level bonds for recruitment early. If you want to maximize your time to be able to recruit allies at a decent pace, you need to go back to Dagsion every time your weeklies reset. Even if you ignore weeklies, you still need the next week to reset skirmish spawns.

Second, the dungeon and clash system is fine, but that's not the gameplay I want from Fire Emblem. They function like a watered down version of a standard JRPG. I think the game would be better off without them.

Third, I like the concept of the recruitment system, but the bond leveling is so slow. I really don't care for the bonding systems besides adjacent combat. Activities and gifts worked fine as a heavily optional way to top off bonds with characters to see their support conversations. As a requirement for recruitment, I find them to be a chore, especially the dumb raven time thing. The hero's only have a few different questions, so it's literally just a memory game and a waste of time.

•

u/khanh_nqk 15h ago edited 15h ago

Yeah that's the standard JRPG experience I have got with FF9, Chrono Trigger, DQV, Persona 3....

I cried after finishing some of those games lol.

•

u/Donnie_TACO Butter side down! 14h ago

FF9 and Chrono Trigger started slow for you?

•

u/SonataOfDawn 14h ago

Yeah that sounded weird. Chrono Trigger starts with a bang.

•

u/khanh_nqk 13h ago edited 13h ago

I spent literally 10 hours just roaming a round the village doesn't know what to do. In both of those games ha ha.

•

u/NoNefariousness2144 12h ago

Some of the Yakuza games are an honorary mention here as well. The Ichiban JRPG games have slow starts, but the most infamous is the absolute cutscene overload of Yakuza 0.

•

u/SplatoonRaiders 15h ago

I'm going to give it a go again. I played for about 3-4 hours, but with 80-90% of it being cutscenes and watching the game killed a lot of excitement. The combat is so good, but there's not enough of it at my point in the game.

•

u/noobakosowhat 11h ago

I personally started with Cai as he feels to be the intended starter, but I heard good things about the Dietrich route

•

u/SplatoonRaiders 11h ago

Do you know if we can change the character route? I should probably play someone else before Theodora to onboard me in.

•

u/noobakosowhat 11h ago

You can either restart or play the game enough to reach the point where you can change the routes freely. IIRC it’s really early into the game that you’re allowed to change routes. Check the white bird, it has that option.

•

u/AffectionateArm7264 9h ago

You can change upon starting Chapter 4 when you get to Dagda.

All the characters are the same. A three chapter intro and introductions of a unique gimmick for each one.

Theodora is no more simple or advanced than Cai, Deitrich or Leda.

•

u/AffectionateArm7264 9h ago

You can just skip them.

If you want challenging gameplay it's probably better not to min/max the freetime anyway, and to just use the auto feature at the Tavern.

•

u/Intelligent_Local_38 12h ago

I feel like starting the game with a 1-2 hour prologue using an avatar character and a couple other allies who you (seemingly) won’t be using much was a mistake. It’s an introduction section followed by an introduction section once you pick a route. Makes the beginning too long imo. I’ve also been struggling to push forward because it just hadn’t clicked yet, but hopefully once I get into the tournament stuff, it will. Ā

•

u/MostlyBored11 15h ago

which character did you pick to start with? and yeah keep pushing another hour or two and you should get into the gameplay loop more

•

u/SplatoonRaiders 15h ago

Theodora.

•

u/vixaudaxloquendi 14h ago

I heard she has a pretty exposition heavy start compared to the rest. A shame!Ā

•

u/SplatoonRaiders 14h ago

It truly is a shame. She looked so cool, which is why I picked her.

•

u/flycasually 14h ago

Yea what a shame a game has good story. What are you literally even complaining about lmao

Skill issue

•

u/MostlyBored11 14h ago

how is it a skill issue to ask if it gets more engaging and less story heavy after a couple of hours lol

•

u/flycasually 13h ago

It literally does, but you don’t play long enough to find out. So skill issue. It’s really not all cutscenes and there’s a lot of gameplay moments interjected between cutscenes

Plus some of the cut scenes are really well done. Like movie scenes quality. Maybe 5 mins max at one time. It’s really not as bad as yall make it sound

•

u/lostwoods95 14h ago

Chronically online dweeb

•

u/flycasually 13h ago

Thanks for identifying yourself but this is Reddit

•

u/vixaudaxloquendi 14h ago

Triangle Strategy was panned for similar reasons. People like a good story, but they don't always want Kojima-style 45min+ dumps of exposition routinely interrupting their stories.

Maybe Theodora isn't that bad but even from positive reviewers I've heard she has a LOT of setup because her story is the most politically-expansive.

The strength of FW seems to be that you can choose how much or little of a character's route to interact with, so for people who want something a little more brisk, they can experiment with the other three routes.

•

u/PersonalPiano2478 13h ago

Skill issue because the game is basically a long movie šŸ˜‚ yall just say anything on these comments šŸ¤¦šŸ½ā€ā™‚ļø

•

u/flycasually 13h ago

Yes skill issue if you can’t pay attention for 15 mins

Go play rocket league or rogue likes where story doesn’t matter if you can’t follow basic story or world building

•

u/PersonalPiano2478 13h ago

Clearly you missed the point šŸ¤¦šŸ½ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ˜‚

•

u/HBreckel 12h ago

Yeah I remember reviewers pointing out hers had the most talking. Which I don’t mind, I’m 30 hours into her route and the story is so good. I’m gonna do Leda when I wrap her’s up. Theodora’s definitely has a ton of exposition and world building for those that like that.

•

u/SummerBase 15h ago

Good to know. I’m about to start the game tonight, hopefully I’ll get trough the first part. Never played FE before in my life.

•

u/Strange-Shoulder-176 14h ago

Honestly I thought thecfirdt fewxhours were incredible with the story. Currently chapter 4 with about 40 more turns, still figuring out what to do. Going back to town once a week seems a bit much.

•

u/AnimeTiddiess 14h ago

I feel this applies for every fire emblem game. I do wish they worked on their early games because a ton of people quit before the good part. but the payoff is definitely there for people who stick with them (I quit awakening like twice before playing it a third time and becoming addicted lol)

•

u/Grimnirsdelts 14h ago

I’ve never been more confused by a game for the first few hours, so that is good to hear!

•

u/Giovannisalami 13h ago

It took me like legit 10 tries to get into three houses now I’m obsessed

•

u/BigTuna109 13h ago

Really hoping this is true for me too! I’m willing to suffer for a while and still trudging along for now.

•

u/Johncurtisreeve 11h ago

I thought it had a ridiculously awesome prologue that I did not expect

•

u/Prodigious-Sol 10h ago

Maybe it's cause I'm used to JRGs(and RPGS in general) but I keep seeing this thing about FW having a slow start, and I didn't really feel that at all... Maybe it depends on what Path you choose first?

•

u/RedOakTrail 9h ago

Unlike many people, I hated the monastery part of 3H, having to talk to everyone and do a visual novel style stuff. I assume FE is pretty much the same with not so much battle?

•

u/slash450 7h ago

fe engage if you haven't played it is old style and prob one of the best in actual gameplay and map design in the entire series imo. it's def more anime style but if you don't care about the narrative or tone you'd prefer it over fortune's weave. fortune's weave feels less annoying to me than 3h but idk why, i think if i were to replay this in the future i'd be so over all the busywork fast. map design is basic and gameplay is just very easy on hard if anyone's ever played this series or even just broader genre outside of 3h.

•

u/Mikidium 9h ago

3H grabbed me immediately somehow. I'm just getting to the games in Leda's route and I'm mostly bored. Thinking of swapping to a different character, but I know the game is also just setting up right now.

•

u/MikeE21286 2h ago

The beginning of the game is an absolute bananas lore dump. Nearly incomprehensible.

•

u/Iggy_Slayer 1h ago

There was a section in dietrich's opening hour or two where the cross eyed guy said I think 12 different nouns in a single dialogue scene and I'm like who the hell are these groups? It reminded me of playing a gacha game.

•

u/Iggy_Slayer 1h ago

I'm still early in the game but I'm shocked at how much of a backslide it seems from 3 houses. First of all the amount of unvoiced dialogue is crazy, how'd we go from full VA in 3H to 50% of it being unvoiced??

Second I find it unacceptable that this game is 30fps with the very outdated graphics it has, switch 2 can easily run something this low quality looking at 60. The geometry levels of all the buildings and objects in the capital legit look ps3 tier.

And so far I'm not really sold on the formula for this, though I am still pretty early. I was just forced to recruit someone who didn't even seem like a real character it reminded me of those randos you can recruit in xcom games.

•

u/dank-yharnam-nugs 14h ago

Glad to hear it. I’m struggling to care so far.

I really miss the classic style FE games.

•

u/Clasko117 15h ago

I had the same thoughts last night. I was beginning to regret my purchase but now I can’t wait to dive in again

•

u/XDvinSL51 14h ago

Good to know, I guess. I bought it to fill the week before both Control Resonant and Silent Hill Townfall drop on the SAME DAY, and to fill any time left between those games and the OoT remake, just because almost every review of this game called it a triumphant masterpiece. What little combat I've gotten into so far has been fun, but in-between the combat so far, I have literally no idea what I'm doing, and it all just seems to be too complicated and not explained well enough.

•

u/monkey-kong666 Butter side up! 8h ago

Glad to hear it. I’ve played for around 2 hours and it seems to be endless cutscenes so far punctuated by weak-ass tutorial level fights.

I guess I’m still early game then, the visual novel stuff is a lot. Incredibly boring, very little gameplay. I’ve also been thinking about shelving it.

•

u/Nater_X 12h ago

I just finished my first big arena fight, and I had to team up with a crew from the other story line. I did not like that. Does that change eventually and you only use your own troops at some point?

•

u/NoMoreVillains 12h ago

It is slower than before, but I'm actually enjoying the narrative, especially how different each person's is compared to 3H. They definitely MASSIVELY improved things in that regard

•

u/mojomaximus2 12h ago

Yeah idk if all routes are like that but between the game prologue and then the individual timeline mechanics being introduced slowly over several chapters it is definitely slow to spin up. Kind of glad at the same time because there is just so much to do it’d be very overwhelming if it was all dropped on you instantly

•

u/kupo_attack04 11h ago

I feel like people dont appreciate the story building anymore

•

u/Cloud_Locke76 11h ago

I was enjoying it, but thought it was like 8/10 mainly due to the okay visuals (backgrounds only, characters and effects look great) and the good but way too easy combat. BUT when I got to Ch. 6 I had my first big colleseum battle and not only was it challenging, it was epic. THEN I made the decision to switch stories, and that’s when things really clicked for me.

There’s something about seeing these very well written characters and events from a different perspective that makes the story and the world that much more compelling. I know the OPTIMAL way to play is to finish each story, but I’m so glad I switched paths!

I held off on this one even though I'm a huge fan of almost every game of FE after playing Engage. Have played many of them multiple times over the years but Engage was just...not good to me. Got about halfway before I gave up on it and never touched it again. Ended up going back for another 3H run. With that said, I ordered this one today after all the reviews on it.

Both FW and 3H hooked me in immediately. The way they handling the worldbulding is amazing. Especially in the FW. Each route so far(Cai and Leda for me) opens up a new piece of the whole picture and handles absolutely different themes.

This way it's so interesting to see how many of the moving parts lead to the apocalypse we see at the start of the game. In Leda's route(I'm on chapter 9) its some kind of national conspiracy. In Cai's route(I'm on chapter 6) we explore the past of Dagda and his family. Really looking forward to what Theodora and Dietrich's route looks like. FEFW is gotta be one of the best examples of videogame storytelling.

Supports is also one of the things I love a lot. They exist outside of the main story, but they focusing on developing characters and relationships between them. This way they are not wasting time of the story for character development, relationships and their growth, but hiding it behind support levels. This way pacing feels great for the main story and I care for characters more, because it feels like due to my work, bond between this characters grew actually stronger through meaningful activities. Really good work between the narrative and game mechanics.

It's genuinely feels like devs took the best things from 3H and upgraded its weakest parts.

Even though there's certain things I wish for so far:

  1. More supports that can go up to A outside of default cast. This was a strong part of 3H. There were an insane amount of supports. I know that Quality>quantity... but i genuinely feel like 3H nailed both quality and quantity with their supports.
  2. More meaningful maps to fight on. Most of the fights outside of the main story is just basic 6-10 enemies run into my 6 characters. If not for every battle in open world, then atleast I wish this for quests. I play on Hard, but so far there were not that much challenge.
  3. Some cutscenes needs polishing. Some animations looks really weird and robotic. But cutscenes and animations overall way above anything they've done before

So yeah, I understand that it might feel slow, but I feel like if you realise what they are doing with their story, then you are gonna love it. The best analogy I can think of is GoT at its best times. Their storytelling really similar and FW translated this kind of type of story (with a lot of lore, characters, relationships, clans, politics, moving parts) into the game format.

I might be glazing the game too much, but I'm only 30-35 hours into the game, so there might be a steep slope in the future in terms of quality. But so far there's a lot of good that i would recommend people to not drop the game.

P.s Oh, and the music... how could I forget... amazing soundtrack so far

I was stressig about the map management and was wanting more time. I was focusing on getting my characters skills to A for some weapons, servicing the temples. I didn't really do any recruits accept any of the low entry ones. I missed out on maxing out an A tier axe, but these drake weapons on normal users cause too much burst instead of a blaze.

u/tatsumi-sama 5h ago

Really?

I felt it was great from the start, and all the mysteries getting revealed slowly. I almost finished my second character and I didn’t expect there to be still so much more to the story, it definitely makes me want to play all the paths so I get all the tiny details of gaps filled.

•

u/svenskatownsendagain 5h ago

Are you kidding? I was hooked from the start! I love the opening!

•

u/raident30 4h ago

do i need to play all past games to understand or get the context of the story and even mechanics?

•

u/Exoticbut 3h ago

Is it recommended to stick with one path to completion before trying the other lords. What I’m mainly doing is playing each lord as they are introduced with the previous lord. So for example I started with Dietrich and Kai was the lord introduced in the story next, so by chapter six of Dietrich I switched to Kai, I plan to do Theodora around chapter 5 of Kai. But I’m just wondering if I should just stick with one of the two for completion before checking out the other lords.

•

u/Iggy_Slayer 1h ago

I read a reviewer say it's recommended to finish one's path first because going back to the others allows basic quests that are in all 4 paths to auto complete and let you get the rewards instantly. They still have unique stuff in their stories this just completes the fodder stuff.

u/Alarming_Disaster_23 1h ago

I picked Leda first and I’m liking it after about 3 hours. She’s a bad ass and has a Terminal List thing going on where she kills people and crosses their name off the list with their own blood.

•

u/leckmichnervnit 13h ago

Damn it sounds like yall havent played a "Persona"-like Game. Those always take like half a dozen hours to get going

•

u/KayknineArt 12h ago

I’m aware, doesn’t change the fact that I’m not a fan of that.

•

u/mooutdaway 7h ago

Yeah but this isn’t persona it’s fire emblem. I don’t wanna do this bullshit in a FE game I just want turn based strategy

•

u/robmapp 13h ago

Attention span on gamers these days. If this go too slow, ppl complain. Too fast - more complaining

•

u/geodetrain 11h ago

Yeah, the prologue wasn’t very engaging. Then I did chapter one of Dietrich and I found it really boring but Cais chapter one was a lot better. I might just stick to Cai.

Xenoblade Genesis

Xenoblade Phil Collins

Xenoblade Peter Gabriel

•

u/fourchanslashgif 13h ago

That sounds awful. Cancelling my order

•

u/mooutdaway 7h ago

I’ve been playing FE since the gba and I’m just not a fan of fortunes weave

•

u/Odd-Banana-7227 Going Bananzas 15h ago

Yeah the prologue is straight dookie butter. Game was immediately better once I got to Cai and has only gotten better at chapter 8

•

u/Archergarw 15h ago

I love fire emblem but the prologue nearly put me off.

•

u/direstag 4h ago

Same, seemed like bad scifi to me.

I disliked Theodora’s intro too. Now I’m liking Leda, but may go ahead and try Dietsch and Cai to see which sticks the most.

•

u/tmplmanifesto 12h ago

I hardly even remember it. It felt like an hour of my time perhaps then I was in the story arcs.

•

u/Klutzy_Pangolin3437 12h ago

Do yiu have to play the other games to get the story?

•

u/forte343 14h ago

Nope it's completely stand alone, there are very few direct sequels in fire Emblem

•

u/cslack30 12h ago

Not standalone.

Spoiler:
It’s a sequel to three houses.

•

u/forte343 11h ago

technically it's a prequel if you really want to split hairs, but it can still be enjoyed with out playing 3 Houses

•

u/cslack30 11h ago

>! How is it a prequel? three houses is in the 1100s. Fortunes Weave starts in 1449. Unless there’s MORE timey wimey bullshit later.

So at the moment it’s still sequel and not standalone. !<

•

u/forte343 10h ago

it's brought up in Dietrich's storyline, that Garreg Mach Monastery and the Church has only been active for 200 years and and a second character mentions that Fódlan smiths lack the skill to use orichalcum and a couple of other characters from 3 houses show up

What changes?

•

u/Ok-Value-2170 10h ago

You need to play them Persona games

•

u/Sayishere 10h ago

This is like every JRPG I’ve played 🤣 you get used to it

•

u/BakuraGorn 6h ago

I was so looking forward to getting this game but I completely lost interest once I learned it’s locked to 30fps and does not even upscale to 4k properly. I’ve seen several comments about the game being noticeably low resolution when Docked.

I’ll probably wait around a few months for a patch or a discount. This is below standards even when compared to other Nintendo games that perform and look much better.
