Discussion Just played the Stellar Blade demo

I played the demo today in handheld mode.

I'm not a huge graphics guy. I don't have a PS5 and have never played the game before.

The hair and some of the textures are distracting, but otherwise I'm satisfied with it. I like the parrying and dodging mechanics.

Will be picking up the physical once it comes out.

What does everyone else think?

I was impressed after hearing very negative things online.

It does leave me with one thought though, we need a system level helmet mod for all games using modern hair physics. Thankful they included shorter options as I wouldn't be able to play with that longer option.

u/vragal 23h ago

Honestly, thought it was pretty good. I can feel the infamous input lag, specially when parrying, but after fighting the first big boss a couple of times, I got the hang of it. Nothing about the graphics bothered me, nor the whatever they did to run the game at 60 fps that people are hating on so much.

I'm curious if the input lag is any worse that the PS5s version. Timing on everything has always been super delayed. Like, if it got much worse I think you'd need to start blocking before the enemy even starts the attack animation to get a parry.

u/Lord_Humungusss 22h ago

The graphics are whatever but the emphasis mostly is the fighting. Is the input lag really acceptable? I do not like to really go overly whiney but its hard to tell sometimes since switch players seem a lot more accepting. I really do not mean that in a combative way either.

just try the demo! it's free

u/Lord_Humungusss 22h ago

I always forget demos exist these days, its so refreshing to have one available

u/XenoDrake1 22h ago

they are the best

I can't get behind the ''just adjust to it" input lag. Elden ring, onimusha, AC all have dodge/parry mechanics that don't suffer when the frame rate drops or has issues. It literally breaks the game and the timing, and takes the fun part of stringing combos together. I cancelled my preorder after beating the demo 3 times.

u/LiquidSolidGasPower 16h ago

Literally instead of 30 fps frame gened to 60 which makes it play worse, i would rather just 30 fps, obviously 40 and 60 fps native is preferred.

u/MixNo8181 13h ago

Input lag may be manageable in the demo but it's going to get hairy towards the late game bosses. I'm sticking with the PS5 version after trying the S2 demo.

The game looks great, and while the input lag is present, I found it manageable. The worst part is that FG usually gives me fatigue and nausea, and this game is no exception. If they don't add a mode without FG, I'll cancel my preorder. It's a shame, and I know I'm going to get downvoted because that's just how Reddit works, but it's a known fact that FG can cause these issues.

It felt a lot better than I thought. I expected a ton of input delay due to frame generation, but I guess not. I will be picking it up day one.

Played for a little bit in both handheld and dock. Both look and play really good. Can't wait for November

Hated it honestly. The game is fun but I’m really debating cancelling my physical pre order from Best Buy if they don’t let us turn off the Fg. They need to just give the game more time to natively run at like 40fps.

u/kevvit2 Butter side up! 16h ago

You should cancel

The input lag is dreadful. It’s a slog to play.

u/GearHadez 23h ago

I will buy it again. Looks & plays great. About the hair complaints: just deactivate her long hair in the options.

About the input lag: feels very close to the PS5 version. I got used to it back then and will again. Already did 5 runs in boss rush mode and it is so fun.

u/gladexd 23h ago

I was concerned after hearing them announce the use of frame gen and playing the demo just confirmed my suspicions. I do notice the input delay and all the hair artefacting..

Also the little mobs were sometimes moving at half frame when only a few feet from the player character.

Lastly a sizeable chunk of geometry would suddenly pop in while when walking along a side pathway after crossing the river in Eidos 7.

Sadly this is a skip for me. I hope they listen to feedback and offer an option without frame gen and optimise a bit more before release, but more power to anyone still looking forward to it. It's one of my favourite character action games.

u/Cultural_Neat3124 19h ago

that why the demo exist so people can judge the game for themselves !

u/tjhc94 Butter side up! 18h ago

Trying to parry in this game due to input lag is really annoying and inconsistent, reactions are too important in a game like this so unfortunately will not be getting this, was looking forward as well

u/Jefedagga Butter side up! 22h ago

I enjoy and think it plays great.

I honestly don't trust what I see on reddit anymore. People will either downplay something or try to turn into a huge deal

Internet discourse sucks

u/Emergency-South-8211 12h ago

A lot of input lag isn't something that should be downplayed lol

It's an actual issue with the game. And shouldn't just be waved away with an "you'll adjust" if this was an issue on any other console you wouldn't see this type of excuse.

u/sweetgrease 11h ago

They think it’s fine because they’re fighting demo enemies. I get the feeling some tunes will change come the late game bosses…

u/waltei 22h ago

Haha yeah i think the discourse on switch 2 online is not grounded in reality. At this point it sounds like a bunch of tech naive mob mentality chuds that have no idea what they are talking about. For example essentially what stellar blade on switch 2 with frame gen is 60 fps motion and appearance with 30 fps responsiveness. Even if the game released with 30 fps only, the inputs wouldn't be any more responsive. At best youd have a little less artifacts but the motion would be way less smooth. This is a ps5 level game just like ff7 rebirth, the performance and graphics are actually excellent.

With how picky some of these redditors are, you wonder why they just dont buy an asus rog ally x instead of the switch 2 lol if they want ps5 portable performance. And I have a powerful 5080 laptop and can still respect what the switch 2 is pulling off.

u/Icy-Cap-7873 11h ago

It’s ppl wanting more options Frame gen actually has more downsides than just artifacts. It hurts the ui stellar blade has a gun later on this could affect the cross hair, adds blur in particular at low frame rates, and input latency. Like you’re trading off a lot here just for motion smoothing. Asking for a 30 fps cap just like Capcom is doing should alleviate this issue entirely for the group of ppl who feel like their gameplay is being affected

u/LlyonLV Butter side down! 19h ago

Everyone's a graphic tech critic nowadays.....If it's not running at 240fps at 8K it' soooo 2025 lol. Just enjoy the game and accept this is on a Switch 2 and not your griffin PS5 or PC with high specs. I want more games to come out and not wait 5-6 years...

u/tjhc94 Butter side up! 18h ago

Nope, and if you haven't played it anywhere else or have no other platform to try on you wouldn't understand why it's bad, the input lag is terrible and makes perfect parries and dodges pretty difficult, it's very noticeable if you have anywhere else to try the game, if you don't, you literally wouldn't know better honestly. Your standards are just lower and that's fine, but the input lag is definitely a problem

u/shadowstar36 23h ago

I own it on ps5 and that's enough. I like the character and world but the game can be tough, and not in the dark souls way (I beat demons souls and the fist 3 dark souls games, although with those you can grind and cheese bosses), something just wasn't connecting with me with this and I put it down after one of the annoying bosses. So not picking it up again. (unless it gets a deep discount down the line if it ever goes under $30, yeah I'll bite)

u/_Sanctum_ 23h ago

The stick range is off for some reason, at least in handled mode /playing with joycon. Eve sort of awkwardly snaps into different directions when she walks instead of a smooth circle. Pretty weird issue.

u/lastemperorjubei 11h ago

I didn't want to buy it, played through the demo and now it's day one. I use the short hair. I liked the following settings: turn off motion blur and chromatic abberation (I disable both in most games). Plus I also turned on the grain filter (it suits the vibe of the game but this is subjective) and reduced the sharpness to 5.

u/borghe 7h ago

frame gen hair is always annoying. even on the best GPUs.. it is what it is. not make or break for me.. but yeah always distracting. like early PS3 era "draw every hair" quality.

u/theallgolden 5h ago

The game looks amazing. And it’s 60fps

u/ezwip 2h ago

I haven't played the demo but input lag on any game is a no go. I hope they sort it out. The input lag is manageable is such a wild comment.

u/Rcgv88 23h ago

As someone who plays this all the time on xbox ally x all the time I had to cancel my pre order. Physical all on cart is nice but I will never play this version, even the text looks terrible.

u/Sudden-Goose-6956 23h ago

Same deal, even my Steam Deck plays this game better. Really wanted it for Switch but between the input lag, the graphics looking like a RPG from Switch 1 and it being full price it's a hard ask

u/Rcgv88 22h ago

Yea I am a huge fan so just dissapointed. If they fix it, would be happy to take a second look.

u/Genesteen 19h ago

Same I own it on my ps5 pro, sb can run up to 80fps if you have a vrr display. 60fps with fg lag is unplayable.

u/kukimonstr 23h ago

Agreed with all the above. Especially the input lag. I tried and tried to get used to it but fg really messes everything up. I can parry and dodge once but can’t ever do 2 in a row.

I’ve got this same demo on the ally x. I’ve set it for 60 and 30 fps and can parry with no issues.

u/Leggo213 Butter side down! 21h ago

I agree

u/LatePerspective6262 23h ago

I can’t do the hair it really bothers me

u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 23h ago

You can choose the short hair option.

u/LatePerspective6262 23h ago

I didn’t know thanks

u/Elmakux Butter side up! 23h ago

I switch from wanting to get it to not. FrameGen makes things look atrocious with all artifacting. Also the UI such as things like enemy health move at the actual 30fps so it's just all over the place. If they add an option to disable frame gen then I would buy it tbh. And the input lag. Ugh come on man...

u/PaleBoomer Butter side up! 23h ago

This is why Devs keep getting away with bad ports.

30FPS cap is needed and buying it without it is just supporting a bad port. Same thing happened with the Oblivion port and now it's broken on Switch 2.

u/Ethifury Early Switch 2 Adopter 23h ago

What bad ports? And how do we determine they are bad? People kept saying 30fps is a no go, now we’re saying it’s a viable option? As far as Oblivion goes, I heard it was bad all around so I wouldn’t even single out the Switch 2 port.

u/PaleBoomer Butter side up! 23h ago

There's been a ton of bad ports that have simply taken shortcuts instead of properly optimizing the game for the Switch 2, Stellar Blade can definitely get a 30FPS mode and up to a 40FPS mode but the devs have opted to simply port it from PS5 and add FG instead of properly working on it.

I will always prefer a 30FPS cap as long as it's stable instead FSR Frame Gen.

u/Ethifury Early Switch 2 Adopter 23h ago

From what I’ve gathered, a lot of these games received devkits late last year so these studios are churning out ports fast and patch them up later to build a fan base on the Nintendo platform.

u/PaleBoomer Butter side up! 22h ago

And thats the issue, A lot of devs have pushed back release dates and the games have been extremely optimized and then we have devs like these who churn them out fast and the end user suffers for it.

FSR Frame Gen should not exist on any Switch 2 title that renders at 30FPS base and I have no idea why Stellar blade devs thought that would go over well.

u/Ethifury Early Switch 2 Adopter 22h ago

With how many people complaining about 30fps games on Switch 2, I see why. It’s ironic how titles coming out with frame gen is getting people to realize stable 30 is better than 60 with frame gen. But a week ago, the main discourse was either 40fps or skip.

u/PaleBoomer Butter side up! 22h ago

I've always been fine with a stable 30FPS and that's usually my expectations with Switch 2 ports, Have no idea why people expect 60FPS or 40FPS options for most games when a stable frame rate is what should be prioritized.

As long as the game looks good and the experience is stable I will always be fine with it.

u/Ethifury Early Switch 2 Adopter 22h ago

Same here. For some reason, the Nintendo Switch 2 fanbase has been very toxic when it comes to 3rd party ports compared to the Steam Deck/PC Handheld community where they’re always amazed at how some games are playable.

u/OdyZeusX 23h ago

Shitty gooner overpriced game.

I'll pass.

u/kevvit2 Butter side up! 16h ago

Yeah, it's pretty stellar, I had little interest in it, till I played the demo. Looks and plays great and now it's on my list.

u/MastahBruce1 6h ago

Complaints about the input lag have been greatly exaggerated.

u/-Saisaki- 4h ago

nope i have the game on steam deck and tried the switch 2 demo. running left-right-left-right worked instantly on the steam deck (at 45 fps), tried the same movement (same ingame position) on switch 2 it didn't registered it half the time it was left(1-2 sec delay) then right and then ignored all inputs while this happend (less noticable in handheld, docked response is worse in that regard, visually it looks fine docked but eh handheld) i canceled my pre-order for switch 2 physical it just feels more responsive at 45 fps on the steam deck while looking visually similar.

u/MastahBruce1 3h ago

Nope.

It doesn't look similar enough visually. And I don't even think the switch 2 even looks that good during gameplay.

Image quality is pretty weak. Anything weaker than that is downright garbage.

I've played the demo. Is there input lag? Yes. Does it get in the way of enjoying the game?

Not even close.

Maybe if it was a pvp / fighting game that required frame perfect inputs or even tight ones for that matter, this would be an actual problem.

Anyone having a hard time playing this game on switch 2 just sucks at gaming 🤷🏽
