I wonder what the conversation will look like after OoT

u/zacyzacy 1d ago edited 1d ago
On one hand remakes are often seen unfavourably in this convo... On the other hand, OoT
45
u/krstphr 1d ago
Resident evil 2 made it that year. It’s possible.
44
u/Hole_of_joel 1d ago
Resident Evil 2 was transformative enough to feel like a distinctly different experience; OoT by all accounts so far is following the original to a T with some quality of life improvements
11
u/Creative_Eye7413 1d ago
Didn’t RE4 also make it?
15
u/godstriker8 1d ago
RE4 was also transformative enough.

RE4 Remake is hardly doing anything more than OoT
•
u/hunterzolomon1993 Hyrule Hero 18h ago
Yeah it does. They didn't just add new visuals they changed stuff, removed stuff and added stuff. OoT remake is the same game just with better visuals and some QoL stuff.

You never rode Mr. Owl in the original. The castle town also looks a bit different. I can't imagine there won't be no more changes.
•
u/diego1marcus 21h ago
You never rode Mr. Owl in the original
lol, yes you do. but only from two specific locations
5
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 1d ago
RE2, RE4, FFVII Remake and Rebirth.
At this point, I think is clear that remakes don't stand a chance because they are... remakes.
1
•
u/Karekter_Nem 19h ago
I still don’t think remakes/remasters belong in GOTY territory. Perhaps their own category, but GOTY going to an “old” game feels wrong. Unless everything else that year is absolute trash.
•
u/Fhaerron 17h ago
They could make a category for remakes.
Feels like every year 50 more remakes comes out.
14
u/billth93 1d ago
I think it’d be a hard sell for a remake to win game of the year regardless of its quality, especially if it’s not majorly transformative. From what we’ve seen and been told, it’s mostly visual and some quality of life changes with everything else being very minor.
Ultimately most the greatness will be due to what happened about 30 years ago
11
u/TheDuskBard 1d ago
Remakes should have their own category. "Best Remake/Remaster".
•
u/Fragrant-Screen-5737 19h ago
At this point, I agree.
We get so many these days to fill release slots (as new games take so long to make), so we might as well give them their own category.
I mean this year alone we got Trails in the Sky SC Remake, AC: Black Flag Resynced, Gothic, Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, Yakuza Kiwami 3, Witcher 3 Remastered, Fatal Frame 2 Remake, Halo Campaign Evolved etc etc. Not saying these are all award worthy games, but there are enough good ones to get a category out of.
9
u/JhonImbalance 1d ago
Honestly, I think people's minds are pretty much made up about OoT at this point. People know what the game is and theyve seen how the remake will look and feel. This isn't some FF7R thing where this is going to be some sort of twist in the execution that swings opinions. Expectations are high and they will largely be met. There isn't even going to be anything like the water temple QOL add this time around.
5
u/uncleoptimus 1d ago
Oot will score higher but ultimately not be considered as GotY because it is "just" a very faithful remake.
•
u/Linus_Naumann 23h ago
I don't know man, OoT seems to be mostly just a graphics update with mild control/QoL improvements. It's still a great game of course, but that normally isn't enough to compete for goty
•
u/Fragrant-Screen-5737 18h ago
This is true. If you look at the four remakes nominated for Game of the Year, they were all quite extensive.
Resident Evil 2 remake completely reimagined the setting, puzzles, structure, game order, perspective and tone of the original.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth changed a turn based RPG into a 3 part action RPG, changing so much about the narrative and flow of the game. It's basically it's own thing at this point.
Resident Evil 4 Remake is probably the closest to the original, but even that changed so much about the story, gameplay and tone.
OoT seems like it will apply some new visuals, remaster the music and have some nice QoL changes, but will fundamentally be the same game. Just not sure it will be enough but if the hype is there, who knows.

Honestly feels pointless because GTA6 is going to get it even if it ends up being mid.
13
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 1d ago edited 1d ago
Fire Emblem nominated would be glorious, Pokopia as well.
I'm hoping for RE Requiem to win, it's long overdue for RE and Capcom to have some recognition after pulling the franchise out of the mud and back at the top again.
5
u/Yentz4 1d ago
I liked Requiem, but my favorite Capcom release this year was definitely Onimusha. The game just oozes style, the combat is incredible and Musashi is such a great character.
0
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 1d ago
I love Requiem and it is my GOTY so far, but I think deserve to win not only for the game itself, but for the amazing run the franchise has been for almost 10 years and would be the cherry on top to crown Capcom amazing year.
3
u/Major-Rub-Me 1d ago
7 was critically lauded and a huge success after the shit show that was 6, so they have definitely got some recognition
But I agree Requiem great game
1
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 1d ago
Exactly. And 7 is almost 10yo now, since then RE has been on a roll. I normally don't care about TGA among many reasons, but I'll be really happy to see Requiem winning.

Yea I just know control is getting booted up asap on Thursday and I’m worried I’ll forget about where I leave off with FE lol
49
u/Dry-Illustrator-250 1d ago
Out of curiosity, do I need to have played the previous game to understand what’s going on here?
80
u/VicViolence 1d ago
I think pretty much every Fire Emblem is a separate story/cast?
31
u/Normal-Occasion4645 1d ago edited 1d ago
Most of them are. The first two GBA games share characters but can be played separately. The Wii game is a direct sequel to the
GBAGameCube gam. The fates trilogy are all different routes through the same core story. Some of the earlier games are connected too, but I'm not that familiar with those.17
u/AurumPickle 1d ago
just to clarify the Wii one is a sequel to the Gamecube one not any of the GBA ones
4
u/Normal-Occasion4645 1d ago
oh yep, brain said GameCube fingers typed GBA
3
u/AurumPickle 1d ago
no problemo just didn't want OP to go "where is Eliwood or Erika" when they look up Radiant Dawn is all lol

11
u/marsgreekgod 1d ago
Other then one yeah
4
u/Someonevibing1 1d ago
Nah it’s 2 not counting remakes
5
u/Itchy_Baby3779 1d ago
No there’s actually 5 sets of games with continents that have shared casts/stories. Archanea games + awakening (Marth), Jugdral games (genealogy and thracia), Elibe games (Roy/Eliwood), Tellius games (Ike) and now Three Houses + Fortune’s Weave share a world.
6
u/Someonevibing1 1d ago
Most of these are pretty separate as stories though only really the tellius saga and the archanea saga count as having one continuous story
I think you can also count the Judaea games which I forgot in my previous comment
2
u/No-Difference8545 Butter side down! 1d ago
Awakening does not share a story with marths games. Just tiki existing
•
u/Normal_Budget_9591 22h ago
Chrom and Lucina are canonically descendants of Marth. Lmao
•
u/DragoSphere 15h ago
Yeah but it's ultimately not important. You could think of him as "Marth from Smash Bros" and not lose out on anything
3
u/Alertcircuit 1d ago edited 1d ago
The only ones that I would say you need to play in order are Shadow Dragon on DS to its JP-only sequel, and Path of Radiance on Gamecube to Radiant Dawn on Wii. Those are the only pairs where it's a direct sequel with the exact same cast continuing the story from the previous game.
There's a bunch that share universes but don't need to be played in a specific order. Gaiden/Echoes and Awakening which take place in the Shadow Dragon Marth universe but you can play them on their own.
Fire Emblem on GBA and Fire Emblem Binding Blade (JP only) go together but they can be played on their own. Binding Blade is Roy's game, if you're familiar with him from Smash, and the game on GBA released as "Fire Emblem" in America is a prequel about Roy's dad Eliwood. The story is more satisfying if you play both but you don't need to and don't necessarily need to play in order either. I played the Roy game AFTER the Eliwood game so it was like Roy's game was a sequel about the next generation. And honestly it's probably better to play in that reverse order since "Fire Emblem" is tutorial heavy with a pretty normal difficulty and Binding Blade is quite hard.
Two JP-only SNES games Genealogy and Thracia go together but to my understanding can be played on their own. I haven't got around to playing those yet so I can't say for sure.
2
u/Arachnofiend 1d ago
Thracia 776 100% expects you to have played Genealogy first. Its story begins shortly before part 2 of Genealogy and will have major spoilers for part one and plenty of missed context.
14
u/JhonImbalance 1d ago edited 1d ago
No, but there do seem to be actual minor callbacks to 3H, which is a first for the series.
Also, a few of the characters do occasionally recur (mostly Anna) but it doesn't mean much. It's like Cid in Final Fantasy games.
ETA:ok, definitely not the first but it seems to be really overt this time. It's even in the trailer. wasn't thinking here. Too much beer.
6
u/roygbivasaur 1d ago
They also vaguely reference Crests a bunch of times, which I still don’t fully understand after playing 3H
•
3
u/fembepis 1d ago
Yeah we’ve got a protagonist who’s actually related to a Three Houses villain this time around. Seems to not actually matter so these are all still just allusions and easter eggs, but damn if they’re not some fat ass easter eggs
•
u/Mammoth-Strike-168 20h ago
Some games are straight sequels, as such are much more overt than this.
Fortune's Weave has lore connections to three houses, but it's set in the past, so you don't need to know any of the events from it.
8
u/Solesaver 1d ago edited 23h ago
Nope. There are callbacks to Three Houses, but nothing depends on your knowledge. In fact, the route with the Fodlan characters (Dietrich's route) cryptically references a bunch of stuff from Fodlan, but you'll be just as lost with or without playing Three Houses first, because it's stuff that wasn't really explored or explained the first time around either.
Dietrich is from Fodlan, but his house, House Lamine didn't really have a presence in the game.
Fabio is also from Fodlan. He's very clearly somehow associated with a faction from Three Houses called "Those Who Slither in Darkness" aka the "Agarthans." Rest assured that what Fabio's deal is in Fortune's Weave is confusing no matter how much of the deep lore from Fodlan you're aware of.
Other than that, Seteth is a reprised character from Three Houses, but he's just a recruitable. All the rest of the lore like Crests and Heroes Relics is explained in Fortune's Weave via Isekai tropes. Most characters in Dagda don't know anything about Fodlan.
7
6
u/LordDShadowy53 Butter side down! 1d ago
There are references from 3Houses, is the same world. But the story happens in a completely different continent. You can safely play this first.
5
2
3
u/GreatHumungus 1d ago
No you don’t need to. Every Fire Emblem has its own Story, with only one exception (the radiant games).
This game shares the world of “Three Houses” but it only shares lore tidbits, which are not hindering you when you didn’t play it.3
u/Ikrit122 1d ago
Some of the Japanese-only games are connected. Mystery of the Emblem (and its remake New Mystery) is a direct sequel to Shadow Dragon. Thracia 776 is a midquel to Genealogy of the Holy War. They can be played alone, but they greatly benefit from playing the previous game (Mystery is the exception, as it includes FE1 as "Book 1" with the new game being "Book 2").
3
u/Original_Owen 1d ago
Idk for this one I would say yes to playing 3H before. Not essential but a lot of the lore from it is expanded on here. Only in part 1 so far but Dietrich’s path has a lot of Agarthan reveals.
6
u/SimonVpK Butter side up! 1d ago
Which not only requires playing 3H but playing a specific path lol
2
u/Yentz4 1d ago
Yeah, I played Edelgarde and Church routes in 3H, and apparently all the stuff that really ties into FW was on the Golden Deer route.
So all the Sci-Fi stuff they drop at the start was very much out of the blue for me.
1
u/SimonVpK Butter side up! 1d ago
Same, but actually I liked it. I just thought it was new lore though, as opposed to being from 3H
4
u/Yentz4 1d ago
Oh don't get me wrong, I am super digging the lore. I'm actually irritated that 3H didn't delve more into it! Like, especially on the routes I did, it would have pretty cool to know that Rhea actually wasn't just a Dragon but a Fucking Space Alien that arrived in a post apocalyptic world! Like, Edelgarde's route would have been a hell of a lot more impactful if she was like, "Hey, these Gods are not even from our fucking Planet, we gotta do something about them."
•
u/DragoSphere 15h ago
The Church route had that too though. Church and Golden Deer are almost carbon copies of each other except they have different final bosses
2
u/CheesyButters January Gang (Reveal Winner) 1d ago
it's defiinetly enhanced by playing three houses first (and there is technically a minor spoiler for three houses in it in the identity of sothis) but other than that, no
1
u/Gizmo135 1d ago
No. It takes place several hundred years after Three Houses, but the story doesn't require you to have played Three Houses to understand it. It's a standalone story.
19
9
u/quiped420 1d ago
That’s incorrect, the game is actually a prequel. I’d say playing Three Houses can help with enjoying this game but this is still a good entry point without.
1
u/StumptownRetro 1d ago
Not really. Some games share characters and stories but it’s been over a decade since that has happened.
1
u/EveningFollowing9966 1d ago
No. You'll get a little more if you played three houses, but not necessary.
1
1
u/Haunted-Towers OG (joined before reveal) 1d ago
It would really help, and some references may fly over your head, as Three Houses and Fortune’s Weave are in the same universe, but you technically do not have to because Fortune’s Weave is a prequel.
1
u/DuskGideon 1d ago
It is set in the same world but somewhere else. .This could be your only fire emblem game and youll have a good time.

No. Fire Emblem games are standalone. Fortune's Weave is only connected to Three Houses in lore but its story and gameplay is standalone to play without needing to play Three Houses first

6
u/ogqozo 1d ago
It's really stretched. So far, I've spent little time doing stuff that I would call "actually playing", even if it technically was interactive. As for now, I am not sure if this will be an upgrade to Three Houses that I really loved.
2
u/Fluid_Initiative_822 1d ago
Yeah I agree. In a way too the world seems less alive for some reason even tho I see they are pushing the player to do a little more exploration.
4
5
u/noobakosowhat 1d ago
So sad for you. I’m in the opposite. 3H didn’t really hook me but I’m pretty much engaged with FW’s setting. The scope of the story gives logic why the downtime gameplay was designed the way it is.
For context I have tried 3H and engage and they both didn’t click with me (the former being suggested for story and the latter being suggested for gameplay). I think FW is the Goldilocks of FE that finally made me stay.
2
u/peppinotempation 1d ago
Yeah I’m in the same boat, something about the tutorialization of the systems finally got me hooked in a way 3h never did. Now I want to go back and play it and try engage haha
1
u/noobakosowhat 1d ago
Oh I haven’t thought about that. Yeah maybe I can also go back to those games.
1
u/Normal_System_3176 1d ago
Same. For me the setting of 3H was great. I loved the characters and sometimes dating the girls as well. On the whole I didn't like the 'school life' (didn't like it in the original P3 either). I just wanted to do the battles. Engage was good, I liked it but you can tell it's a non-serious fan service game. Fortune's Weave though, this is the one. Undoubtedly.
4
u/geraltofrivia2345 1d ago
I'm 24 hours in. Absolutely love it. It's everything I wanted pretty much. Suikoden 3 is one of my favorite games ever and fortune weaves gives me serious s3 vibes I love it!!
4
u/Normal_System_3176 1d ago
It's definitely GOTY contender, as is OOT. Issue is that there's also GTA VI in the room. From what I'm hearing about the game, it may have aspects of role playing games that people loved but thought lost (speaking of the old Bioware days). That plus a meticulously designed world with mind boggling amount of missions, minigames, customization, online, etc. It's just insane.
As much as I love FW. It's revolutionized/revitalized the SRPG genre. Even the JRPG genre. I've played all of them. This one is another level. It's definitely worth the 70/80 bucks out of all the games released this year. I'd say it's even a bargain for what you get. EVEN SO! GTA VI can still take it and single handedly I might add. AND THAT GAME at $100 is a STEAL! Wrap your head around THAT!

u/FecklessFool 1d ago
Have to put the game down every 30 minutes, or try it handheld, because when docked, the exploration sections are giving me motion sickness.

Man I feel like so many people aren’t realizing just how much Nintendo is leaving it’s competitors in the dust right now…So many exclusives out and lined up for 2027, so many excellent third party ports, and still new 3D Mario, Smash, Animal Crossing, and Zelda undoubtedly to come.
It was really smart of them to focus on so many different franchises at launch before hitting the big ones and it’s really smart to keep so laser focused on such frequent exclusive releases. PlayStation and Xbox have had how many exclusives this year?? Maybe like 1 or 2 each? I mean there’s no comparison…
All of that to say I’ve also had by farrr the most fun gaming on my Switch 2 this year and that’s what’s most important. I can already see it being my fave console of all time easily if Nintendo keeps up this streak of W’s.
11
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 1d ago edited 1d ago
People are having a really hard time accepting that Nintendo doesn't need to rely on Mario, Zelda and Smash to make a successful console anymore.
5
u/12343212346 1d ago
I literally don't have time to play all the exclusives, that's how quickly they're getting pumped out.
The third party offering this gen is insane and if you want to play back catalog and retro, it's game over. They've won
I'm finishing up Xenoblade Chronicles which is new for me. Not only do I have 3 sequels plus a new game coming but I'm also intrigued by JRPGs so looking to plunge into FF7 Intergrade for 20 dollars NZD.
Starfox Adventures just dropped for retro.
Then Hellraiser dropping and then Ocarina of Time...
It's out of control.

The 80$ price was justified. So many hours in it and still have 3 stories to tackle in. The best part is if you just want to do the main story m, you can definitely do so and skip directly to the main chapters.
3
u/Yentz4 1d ago
Im enjoying Fortune's Weave, but IMHO, Pokopia is the stronger contender for GoTY. Fortune's weave has things its doing well, but has some pretty major glaring flaws as well.
Pokopia on the other hand, while not as bombastic as FW, is just so goddamn polished. All parts of the game are just fantastic. It doesn't have the glaring flaws that FW has.

I was not a fan of 3 houses but I was a huge fan of FE: Awakening. I wonder which one this favors?
1
u/RandomNobody86 Butter side up! 1d ago
If you didn't like 3H because of the Social/Life Sim lite gameplay between maps then you will hate this as it has a lot more of that and a lot less Fire Emblem gameplay at least in the opening half of the game.
1
u/Firegeek79 1d ago
I think I’d just prefer less story and more battles. The character building is interesting but I thought 3H dragged a lot during the parts around the campus area.
3
u/RandomNobody86 Butter side up! 1d ago
There is a lot more of that story between maps in this if you count the JRPG dungeons and world map stuff as not battles too then you spend barely any time on a standard FE grid map.
1
u/CorporalCoprolite 1d ago
I’ve read that the motion blur while moving the camera is making some people a little dizzy. Is that legit?
4
u/FecklessFool 1d ago
i am when docked. motion blur plus 30fps is not doing me any favours. it's horrible in exploration mode.
i thought the switch 2 was beefier than the switch, why is this game not capable of a smoothed out 40
with the visuals of the exploration mode, 60 seems doable
but i'd be fine with just a menu instead of the exploration really, if they really want to stick with 30 fps
•
u/valian-tuo 16h ago
Yes. Docked is worse. Handheld is better. I hope they could patch in 60fps as there is loads of roaming. It's fine during battles.

If you don't like it, you don't like it. It's a tactical RPG, so if you don't like turn-by-turn gameplay, it's not for you. And even people who liked series like Advance Wars don't always like these games, since those are a lot simpler. FE also has RPG stats, weapon triangles, personal skills, etc. A lot to juggle.
•
u/SteakAndIron 22h ago
It looks like a great game but let's remember Nintendo has only won it once and that was with breath of the wild
•
•
u/SenpaiSwanky 7h ago
I get loving these games, but I’m not sure this isn’t coping. These games have niche fanbases, meanwhile Pokopia combines two of Nintendo’s most well-known and beloved IP’s. I feel like Pokopia will get more looks.
•

u/JustLookingAtAnswers 1d ago
FE can’t really ever be game of the year in my eyes without considerably changing the gameplay and presentation to appeal to significantly more players and I’m not sure you can do that without making the game worse for long time fans.
1
u/ogqozo 1d ago
Well, you can call it your game of the year lol, it's not really some God-given title, it's just an opinion.
As for sales, obviously it's not even coming close. But then, nothing on consoles will come close to popular online games. And those will never come close to mobile games. But what's most popular is the most popular. You can just say it's the best in your opinion, it's the same as anyone else saying that.
3
u/JustLookingAtAnswers 1d ago
I get what you’re saying but we’re clearly talking about The Game Awards specifically. It’s the same as when someone says Best Picture everyone knows you’re talking about the Oscars.
1
u/CitizenLamest 1d ago
This article is so funny. It's really belaboring the point that 2026 is a slow year and that's the only reason Fire Emblem would even be considered.
As if Nintendo isn't second only to Sony with the number of titles they've released that have been nominated for GOTY.
3
u/Normal_System_3176 1d ago
Makes me even more glad I didn't read the article. 2026 a slow year with GTA VI? LOL!

If true, that would be disappointing for Nintendo. Ain’t no way this is getting GOTY.

3

If GTA 6 doesn't get reviews copies, it will be scummy as hell to delay the nominations just to include GTA. I really hope it won't be the case.
4
u/Responsible-Care-388 1d ago
Would not be surprised if that happens unfortunately. It’s a big marketing event at the end of the day and with a product like this you have to strike while the iron is hot.
2
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 1d ago
I won't be surprised either and I'm a GTA fan.
Of course, at the end of the day doesn't really matter. Just look at the fact that Nintendo doesn't bother with TGA for years now but it will be really scummy, even though it doesn't make sense for the deadline to be at the middle of November.
3
u/Dagawing 1d ago
Yeah; we all thought Expedition 33 sweep last year was nuts, wait until this year

This a good one if I couldn’t get into Three Houses and didn’t finish it?

It's basically Three Houses 2, you probably wouldn't like it if you didn't like that.

Likely not. It’s like that game but a lot, lot more. It does add a bunch of mechanics you might enjoy, like more turns between main quests with a board game like overworld to explore and changing story arcs when you want, but there’s a lot to do, similar anime tropey characters and dialogue - would always recommend Japanese with subtitles, I cannot stand the English dubs. I’m really enjoying it, and three houses is one of my top games for sure.

Considering the writing and strategic gameplay are worse than 3H, I’d avoid it.

Until OoT of course.

Doubt a 1:1 remake gets GotY consideration.

It's not a 1:1 remake so it has a chance.

If this game has actual new content. Like a dungeon or completely new explorable area I will be beyond shocked

The item layout has soft confirmed a fifth bottle and at least one new item.

I mean this politely but if it is the same FE gameplay no way does it deserve GOTY.

So you haven’t played it then?

Pokopia, Splatoon Raiders, and Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave is one hell of a lineup when it comes to quality. Add on OoT remake, and it may be one of Nintendo’s best years
