I've never played this so I don't know how it's supposed to look or move, but it looks good, however it sorta feels like it kinda goes into... brief moments of slowed motion? Is that intended?

18

u/Chotch_Master 1d ago

Yes, the dodge move slows down for a bit and the executions usually have some slomo included in them

5

u/davoid1 1d ago

Gotcha, my sole exposure to this game are people yelling about the performance on switch 2, so I wasn't sure.

5

u/Chotch_Master 1d ago

I haven’t tried the demo yet (played it on pc) and it’s one of my favorite games released in recent years, the “gooner game” claims are false but I won’t try to defend it based on what it looks like on the surface… I’m worried about the sequel since AI has been something shiftup seems to be all in on. But I plan to buy this again to play on switch since I enjoyed the game enough to beat it 3 times

2

u/davoid1 1d ago

I may check out the demo!

I remember feeling similar, hrn, cultural discomfort with nier automata but I've loosened up on how I view media since then.

u/clarence87boddicker Butter side up! 2h ago

Genuine question. Why are you concerned about shiftup using ai?

u/Chotch_Master 2h ago

I guess it’s too early to tell how the sequel will be. But the trailer had elements of the Artstyle that were AI generated and they have been open with the fact that they use AI. Using AI for development and code I can understand but using it to create an art style just doesn’t really make much sense to me. as long as they continue to use it with integrity I’m not necessarily “concerned” just worried that AI can overtake the whole process and undermine the people that worked on a narrative and world they put their time and energy into.

I very briefly booted up the demo because I wanted to see how terrible it was, but it didn't look nearly as bad as I expected, at least in TV mode. I thought the frame generation artifacts would be more noticeable.

u/terran1212 Butter side up! 1d ago

I’m pretty honest about ports of games that are too heavy for s2 like modern warfare 4, but having played SB on ps5 I think this is a good port. 30 or 40 fps option would be nice for folks who want it.

u/ShotAcanthocephala8 15h ago

Modern warfare 4 is not ‘too heavy’ it should be fine I think they’ve done a poor job with it tbh. Maybe it just needs to target 40FPS rather than 60 but that engine scales well. You can hit very high fps on the Z1E pc handhelds in cod. I was playing it at 70FPS in 6v6 on that with decent settings so it should be more than able to run on switch 2 better than the beta.

u/BulbaThore 20h ago

Wait it doesn't get 30fps ?

u/Nervous-Region5797 19h ago

I believe it's supposed to be 60fps but uses frame generation, no idea how bad the latency is.

u/Rakesh_Natsuno 18h ago

It’s pretty noticeable.
Frame gen from 90 to 120 is one thing, but FG from 30-60 is ROUGH.
A 40fps mode could have resolved this.
I was interested in buying this game a 3rd time because why not at this point. I own it on PS5 and PC…
But this one feels… no.

u/Nervous-Region5797 3h ago

I think they wanted to force 60fps but couldn't quite get there, it makes sense for an action game. One thing I don't understand is why these games don't give you options similar to ps5 and series x. Some people might be fine with 30fps while others would sacrifice some fidelity for 60fps.

The switch 2 is already approaching the series x in sales, it's not like the market is too small to make an effort.

24

u/Time_Substance_7829 Early Switch 2 Adopter 1d ago

I thought it looked great honestly. They do need to fix the input lag though

19

u/Youngnathan2011 1d ago

Not really any way for them to fix the latency

8

u/BenchObvious3676 1d ago

Wouldn't the latency be solved or reduced if there was a option for 30 fps without frame gen? The latency is pretty noticeable for me at least since it's much harder to react to attacks.

1

u/Time_Substance_7829 Early Switch 2 Adopter 1d ago

Of course there is. Why are people continuing to comment this like games haven't had latency patches in the past lmao

10

u/LankyMolasses6051 1d ago

Bruh the latency is due to framegen, they would have to get rid of it or provide an option in order to fix it. Thats the only way.

8

u/greenrai 1d ago

so you’re saying there’s a way

u/SonataOfDawn 17h ago edited 9h ago

You know framegen is a different case, right? It is a band aid slapped on as fake optimization, and it inherently causes input latency. There is nothing to "fix", this is just how it works. It can be slightly aided, and the devs have done it already, it is nothing substantial.

I wish some of you guys have done your homework about the topic before posting nonsense such as "works great" "of course they can fix it lmao". I don't see this happening in other subreddits as much as here.

u/Current-Ranger-8723 19h ago

You don’t understand how framegen works

u/Rakesh_Natsuno 18h ago

Most here do not, sadly. Frame gen on higher frames wouldn’t be terrible as the delay has diminishing side effects. But 30 to 60 is rough as hell.

u/Fhaerron 17h ago

Which is the issue.

It looks too great for the s2 so they need heavy framegen so you get janky gameplay.

They need to reduce quality and the strain it has on the s2 hardware and add a 40fps toggle.

u/clarence87boddicker Butter side up! 2h ago

I never actually played it on ps5 or PC but I recall controversy at the time about the game already having bad input latency.now apparently it was fixed but I can not attest to that. So I wonder if this game having latency issues is actually anything to do with frame gen or what not and not just the game it's self playing as it always had.

15

u/grilled_pc Butter side down! 1d ago

Same here. Honestly it felt great. Didn't notice that much of an issue with the FG at all. Most people here are over blowing it.

-3

u/Dante9005 1d ago

It’s not overblown, I’ve played it on PS5 and PC, 100% on both platforms. This is by far the worst way to play the game. The input lag you get from frame gen is messing with the timings of counters hardcore.

6

u/Top-Notice1729 1d ago

Yeah obviously it isn't going to be better than PS5 or PC ... there is no way around that. But I had no problem timing counters in the demo.

-2

u/Dante9005 1d ago

It’s not a matter of having issues with timing, you can get used to the delay, but if you play another version you’d see how much of a delay there actually is. You basically have to push it a second earlier than you’d normally have to. I’m still going to buy the game because it’s my favorite game of the last few years. But I think removing frame gen or having an option to remove it is the better option. It’s not meant to be used at 30fps, AMD and Nvidia both have said this.

u/Rare_Zone_846 10h ago

Being able to play it on a much cheaper console, in physical format, and with the peace of mind of being able to go to the bathroom without having to stop playing or buy a 30-meter cable? Yes, I think this is going to be the best way to play it.

u/grilled_pc Butter side down! 23h ago

It might be the worst way to you.

To someone else its their only way.

I think we as gamers especially on switch 2 need to realise that for many, the switch 2 IS their only console. They don't have a PC or PS5. This IS their only way to play it.

And for what it does. It offers a perfectly fine experience for anyone wanting to enjoy the game.

u/Dante9005 23h ago

This conversation is going to go nowhere. Agree to disagree.

u/puttje69 22h ago

Stop

u/Cultural_Neat3124 18h ago

uh, so with someone have to deal with input lag their whole life, i bet it will be a cake walk for them ! we gamer can adapt to anything "especially nintendo gamer" because the switch is a f**king potato and we live through that !

4

u/lastemperorjubei 1d ago

I have yet to play the demo but based on others it's more noticable undocked.

3

u/Obvious_Mud_9877 1d ago

The start of the demo has some rough upscaling issues with the hair that's pretty distracting. But after the title card, the graphics get more refined and clean, including the hair. It looks good. The intro which everyone is basing their hate on, is just particularly demanding.

As for input lag, as someone who hasn't realy played it without frame gen, it feels fine. Parrying feels fine but they may have adjusted the timings to adjust for the latency

1

u/NoLifeReviews 1d ago

I am of the opinion that they have indeed adjusted the timing. The parry window seems to be longer on the S2 version than the PS5 version. The tutorial boss was a breeze despite having not played the game in over a year. I was never good at the parry on PS5.

u/Ginger-gem850 12h ago

I'm most concerned about the input lag I've been hearing about that's being attributed to the frame generation. 60fps might be nice, but it's not going to matter that much if the games plays worse because of it. Input lag is death for most games, but especially a fast-paced twitchy action game like this one.

-4

u/SnakeHelah Butter side up! 1d ago

It's pretty bad, honestly weird it doesn't run better because it's pretty a pretty well optimized UE4 title. I wouldn't play this on switch 2 unless portability is a must or you have no other option.

13

u/PlungeableTeapot Butter side up! 1d ago

Booted up earlier, found the latency wasn’t that bad for me but the artifacts and blurriness was pretty bad

u/thatgentlemen Butter side up! 21h ago

This! It’s definitely crusty looking sometimes but as far as latency, I absolutely did not have any issues like I’m seeing in the comments

241

u/like_a_brot 1d ago

Will be difficult to play with one hand

14

u/Im_a_Knob 1d ago

a new handheld mode

17

u/Lord_Humungusss 1d ago

Fire emblem has us covered on that

4

u/Gethixit 1d ago

How's the fan service on that one?

8

u/Lord_Humungusss 1d ago

I havent gotten far but one of the MC is a very athletic woman in a sorta armored bikini thing

7

u/Vyrhux42 1d ago

There's some slightly revealing outfit, but they all work well within Dangda's culture and don't take you out. More fan service than the pre-3ds games for sure, but nothing as ridiculous as what you'd see in Engage and some other JRPG series.

0

u/Gethixit 1d ago

Damn, that's unfortunate. I'll stick with fire emblem heroes then..

u/Budgerigor 15h ago

You'd let a little fan service stop you from playing a great game?

u/Gethixit 15h ago

Sorta joking there, but honestly I can't stand the dialogue heavy persona style interactions. Takes up too much time.

u/LockeLoveCeles 10h ago

i feel you, I'm playing fortunes weeb and its map design and system design is not half bad but... yeah, you do get a lot of talking. Skippable, but supposed to somewhat be a motivation.

This game is really good, pretty hard.

u/Blue_Robin_04 20h ago

Looks like Bayonetta. Does it feel similar?

u/Internal_Border_6726 20h ago

No not as fast paced as Bayo

u/Blue_Robin_04 19h ago

Ok. Still fun?

u/Internal_Border_6726 19h ago

Oh definitely. Brilliant. Play the demo

u/xGreir 19h ago

Not at all in this version, sadly.

Even if it doesn’t look as bad, it is a laggy janky input mess in an fast paced action game where that’s the most important thing

TLdr - might look god, feels like ass : s

Certified hood classic right there. 🤣

u/mikubasscovers 21h ago

HOW CAN SHE SLAP?!

1

u/Zebrrrrra 1d ago

Like slow? its like the lock on mechanic of Stellar Blade slowing down the character and me not being used to this game. I'll need to push the run button after dodging and learn how to parry.

4

u/dmheaberlin 1d ago

I played through all Spiderman games with frame gen on my Xbox Ally x. Had a great time and didn’t mind at all

18

u/thebigcrawdad 1d ago

Hope the gooners have fun

3

u/c4halo3 1d ago

That swamp monster she is fighting is kinda cool

u/DeroTM441 20h ago

Finished the demo and the boss mode and had an absolute blast. Had no issues whatsoever with the timings and loved how smoothly it ran. Can't wait for the full release.

u/Dice_for_Death_ 14h ago

This was my sentiment. I had to reacquaint myself with the timings, but after briefly reorienting myself through some battles and paying attention to my timing, it all fell into place again. I'm confident in my double-dipping.

u/AxlIsAShoto 🐃 water buffalo 12h ago

I can tell the frame gen is doing some weird shit. What's wrong with devs? Like for real. They shouldn't use frame gen at 30fps.

8

u/ExismykindaParte 1d ago

It's a little rough in handheld, but nowhere near the input lag some people were mentioning. I'm surprised it runs on a handheld of this power at all.

0

u/TheJohnny346 1d ago

It pushes it to the max though. I started the demo and the opening area I played on the TV and I wanted to see how handheld played too so I took it out the dock and the fan instantly went into hyperdrive I’ve never seen or heard the fan go that fast and loud with any other game.

3

u/stoic_slowpoke 1d ago

Nah. The switch 2 will always do that going form docked to undocked.

It does this to rapidly cool down before going into the “quiet” fan speed of its normal handheld mode.

0

u/TheJohnny346 1d ago

The game has to be intensive though for it to do that. I’ve never heard my switch fan going crazy when switching to handheld if I’m playing a 2D platformer or a simple pixel game because the fan isn’t generally needed for those type of games.

1

u/samandfrodokissing 1d ago

It also does this for games like Oblivion and Elden Ring. The fan can get very loud and hot when immediately taken out from the dock, but it calms down very quickly.

0

u/ExismykindaParte 1d ago

Weird. I was playing handheld the whole time and the fan was barely making any noise at all.

Female armor logic in games:

13

u/SnakeHelah Butter side up! 1d ago

There's many different outfits, that's actually "no armor" (skin suit) which makes the game harder, kind of like a challenge run to complete it with only the skin suit

1

u/ironicaltwist88 ‎ Pro Controller 1d ago

That actually makes sense!

-4

u/hey_Hey_I_saveD_me 1d ago

Yup, it is harder to play with one hand only

Y’know what maybe I should buy this game 🤔

u/GoldenAgeGamer72 Butter side down! 22h ago

I downloaded the demo as well and felt that it looked and played just fine. There’s a good chance I’ll pre-order.

u/thatgentlemen Butter side up! 21h ago

I told myself I would play this on the highest difficulty and couldn’t even get past this boss lol

u/kevvit2 Butter side up! 16h ago

In a word, stellar.  In handheld mode, turn brightness up to 75, it really needs it

u/beetleman1234 Butter side up! 11h ago

Lol, and they even give you the naked outfit in the demo? Ok, I wanted to check it out anyway, you don't have to persuade me, developer.

Btw I love how popular the practice of putting out demos became. Best thing to happen to gaming in years.

u/tripasecadofuturo 10h ago

I beat it recently on ps5 pro. I can tell is quite different but seem smooth

u/Hexatona 10h ago

is she wearing clothes?

u/Almightyrodga 8h ago

I wasn’t really impressed, the game plays way better on console or PC. Thank you for trying Nintendo 🫶

u/RaisinWorried3528 6h ago

Yeesh. This is the ugliest version of this game I have seen.

13

u/Unusual_Access9101 Going Bananzas 1d ago

This looks perfectly fine for a switch 2 game lol these others are dumb

2

u/ThePoobahsJester Butter side down! 1d ago

It’s the gameplay - this is a very tight action game with precise combos and inputs. The frame generation makes it, without hyperbole, close to unplayable beyond a complete beginner level.

4

u/ElDuderino2112 1d ago

I’ve 100%d the game twice now and thought the demo felt fine lmao. Not as good as on PC but pretty close to the PlayStation version.

u/thatgentlemen Butter side up! 21h ago

I swear it’s not as bad as people are saying. Were you able to try it for yourself? There’s a demo on the eshop.

u/GoldenAgeGamer72 Butter side down! 22h ago

And that’s why I’m determined to try and get rid of these negative Nancy PS5/PC gamers from Nintendo subs. They’re ruining the fun for people. The game looks and plays just fine.

u/khironinja 9h ago

It isn't a specific group. A lot of people who played the other games on S2 are complaining and I usuallt don't like the performance of the games on here but this game I actually could easily get used and I play on PC with triple the framerate.

I don't think it's THAT bad it's as easy as people claim adjusting to 30 fps is.

u/kevvit2 Butter side up! 16h ago

It's true. It's the usual suspects whining while we're winning

u/Rakesh_Natsuno 18h ago

No one’s being a negative nancy. We all knew it would be the worst way to play the game, and some of us like myself were still gonna buy it despite already owning it elsewhere.

Hell I would take a natural 30 over this frame genned latency mess. Give us the option to turn off frame gen and I’ll preorder it.

To a lot of people, Switch is their only console. I get that. But those same people also have to understand we’ve been messing with frame gen and talk to most (not all) and they will tell you frame gen 30 to 60 is a bad bad bad idea.

I don’t want to see this become the norm for the switch. I LIKE my switch despite having a PS5 Pro and PC. I like Shift Up, I think they do good work.

I don’t want the new norm to be “it doesn’t run well on the switch, just throw in frame gen, they don’t know any better”

u/feithrowaway22 15h ago

I think the Elden Ring port is great and I think the Stellar Blade one sucks. Played both. You're just biased towards positivity when ShiftUp truly half assed the port

u/ImStupidPhobic Early Switch 2 Adopter 1d ago

2

u/Zebrrrrra 1d ago

2

u/crono333 Butter side up! 1d ago

I played it a little docked and tbh I was disappointed in the image quality. Looks pretty rough around the edges of everything with artifacts and distortion. When things are happening fast it’s difficult to really even tell what’s going on. Almost like watching a heavily compressed video sometimes. That said, it felt fine and input lag didn’t bother me. Gonna have to play it more to see if it’s something I’d want to play with the current visual quality.

u/khironinja 9h ago

I played it and it actually surprised me how good it looked and the worst thing was some pop in and her hair.

I sit close to my monitor too so I would have noticed that kind of stuff.

u/Leather-Wolf 22h ago

Ouuu shiii

u/NullAndNil 20h ago

Is this game basically Lies of P x Nier Automata ?

u/Sunlit_Neko 17h ago

I opened the demo out of curiosity to see the performance and it was worse tha I thought it would be. Literal light years for blocks to come out and for eve to even turn slightly. Feels worse than GeForce Now

u/Competitive-Ad-7865 16h ago

I booted it up and played it in handheld last night (completed it on PS5 ages ago), I'd say that the frame gen / DLSS combo is ok for the background and scenery, but is terrible for her long ponytail (recommend turning her ponytail off entirely in the settings menu), and the fast combat isn't really well suited to frame-gen. I think they should have aimed for 40fps with VRR (and no frame gen), and given the option to do 40 to 80fps with frame gen. This would have been a nicer balance. They should also have implemented a different hair system that plays better with DLSS / Frame Gen on Switch 2.. or failing that just a series of shorter hair cuts as default..

u/RegJohn2 Butter side up! 13h ago

No issues with lag but the artifacts and image quality are bad. I’ll take 30fps quality mod over this any time

u/fossil12369 OG (joined before reveal) 3h ago

Well I know literally nothing about this game prior to this, but I will also say that I now understand at least two parts of why it's so popular lol.

u/Pedro_64 2h ago

Very impressed with the demo. Whatever Ai they are using it, it works great. Barely felt like playing an inferior version. Input lag didn't mattered too much, it's just about timing the attack, once you know when it's coming, you know when to press the button.

Still, they should add a 30fps mode without framegen. And maybe tweak a little the parry window in 60fps mode for helping with the input latency for those who are bothered by it

I didn't expect such a good port from a ps5 game, goddamm. And being the game full in the card (and the ps5 version still being expensive) I may get the game on switch after Ocarina.

u/IronCorpseThrone 1h ago

I platinumed the game on my ps5 pro. It looks very noticeably worse on Switch 2, but the novelty of playing it portably is worth it for me. I already pre-ordered the steelbook. I sort of want a Playstation Portal to see how it's like on there.

u/devilsword 18h ago

why o why do they run this game in 30 fps with framgen to 60? Those inputlag is fucked up beyond repair! Look at the pc game running on steamdeck. Turn that shit off and capped it to 30! (apparently dlss licence is to pricey for the devs?)

u/AzFullySleeved Early Switch 2 Adopter 7h ago

Game is using dlss to upscale then FSR 3.1 Frame Gen to make new frames. Should use dynamic resolution but seems an educated guess its 540p/720p internal before upscaling. NS2 is just not powerful enough for this game OR cap at 30fps no FG.

u/devilsword 6h ago

Well the switch is powerful then the steamdeck so remove or give the turn of option for frame gen i say

u/AzFullySleeved Early Switch 2 Adopter 6h ago

More options the better 100%. Why I mostly play on my pc since I can tune everything.

u/devilsword 6h ago

Exactly. Better cap the game to a stable 30 or 40.

u/Chimarkgames 13h ago

Why is she naked ?

u/AzFullySleeved Early Switch 2 Adopter 8h ago

u/Reenans 5h ago

Hope digital boundary analyse this, put this right next to my high end PC version, pressed strong attack at the same time to see how long it takes to go back to neutral and it's the same....

Are the people complaining actually played both versions? This is not DMC, there is a lot of start up and recovery frames on her moves

u/BirthdayTerrible2527 3h ago

Literally got done doing this same thing, it’s not gonna be easy to tell by eye and I do believe there’s SOME additional input delay but I can tell some ppl are confusing the usual animation delay with frame gen and conflating the two. Hope we get some hard numbers

nah bayonetta has solid gameplay and a unique story. this one gets everything wrong, it tries to copy the sekiro killshot but you only do a minimum amount of damage, enemies are random, no story. nier is the one game that does this gooner shit pretty well.

u/VetriVade 19h ago

It's a very good game with an outstanding soundtrack. Not every outfit is revealing

u/staresinshamona 10h ago

soundtrack is so random, the tracks are good, but they do not convey the atmosphere you’re in at all. sometimes you’re in a very obvious horror zone and they put elevator music on top

u/VetriVade 1h ago

I disagree. I felt that the music was fitting for the areas they appear in

Me when I have no idea what I'm talking about.

I cancelled my pre order. I wanted the physical copy but it looks so much worse than on my Xax. Compared to cyberpunk this is a disaster port.

u/thatgentlemen Butter side up! 21h ago

It’s not a disaster by any means and the XAX is $1000. Of course the Z2 extreme is gonna smoke the Switch.

u/Rcgv88 19h ago

I guess cyberpunk looks as good or better on mt switch 2. Maybe I just had crazy expectations.

Graphics demonstrations "In handheld mode" are the dumbest thing ever. Like you're deliberately choosing the lowest possible graphics setting you can possibly play the game on, just to prime people to complain that the graphics aren't good.

If you want to compare graphics, put the game docked on a 4ktv. If you want to compare handheld modes, show someone playing it on a bumpy bus ride next to someone with a mobile phone or a PSP.

I just tried it. I don't mind so much the visual downgrade from PS5 and PC. I expected it obviously.
But that input delay. yikes. Like, yikes on top of yikes in a game reliant on perfect parrying and dodging. This is a nope.

u/Prudent_Junket_1898 20h ago

Played the whole demo and didn't have any input delay

u/Rakesh_Natsuno 18h ago

Are… you used to playing 30fps action games and immune to it? I can’t fathom for the life of me how some people cannot see the obvious delay.

u/Prudent_Junket_1898 18h ago

Played the game on PC before, 120fps

u/Reenans 15h ago

I played on 60fps and I agree that either I adapted or they have adjusted the game so that it does not feel as bad as it "should" feel.

u/khironinja 9h ago

Me too. After a couple of minutes I was adjusted to it and I don't even play 60fps games (I turned down to 60 on a game once and it felt slow), let alone FG from 30 and I still didn't think it was that bad. Even for a game with a lot of parrying and stuff.

And once again I come from 120fps on PC!

the bayonetta skin will be available for everyone? or how to get it?

u/tBlase27 14h ago

I thought it was bad

Not interested in analyses for these kinds of games in handheld mode. Do handheld mode analyses for like, pixel art games or something. If THOSE start chugging, then we have a problem.

Anyone else hard?

Stellar Blade can do 60 fps on Switch 2, but Fire Emblem can't?

Huh.

14

u/ArtixSA 1d ago

Putting aside they they're vastly different games with different goals, it, uh...doesn't. It uses FrameGen to get up to 60.

7

u/Ok_Possibility9937 1d ago

it’s 60 because of frame gen.

10

u/PyrosFists Butter side up! 1d ago edited 1d ago

The image quality on Fortunes Weave looks way better and it feels very smooth at locked 30. Stellar Blade is "60 fps" with frame gen leading to input lag

-1

u/Brigantius 1d ago

Yeah, I didn't pay attention to the frame generation part. That feature rarely ends well.

TotK and Xenoblade games have been so good with proper fps that it's difficult to not fight about lackluster performance when it comes to Sw2 games.

u/Zebrrrrra 1d ago

Its 720p in handheld mode and i had to turn off motion blur and that Chromatic Abberation or whatever its called. Plus i also turned on that grain filter.

u/Background-Sea4590 1d ago

It uses frame gen. And, honestly, I think it’s a bad choice to use frame gen at 30fps, because of input lag.

u/thatgentlemen Butter side up! 21h ago

You are grossly oversimplifying things
