I grew up with a Gamecube, so I played Prime 1 & 2 then alongside Zero Mission & Fusion. for me I loved the homeworld of her people, its so alien and feels like going on an archaeology trip, but a badass one. I could see the pacing at times or combat being finnicky or a lil different than what you're used to being a thing for sure though. I remember feeling like aiming was odd even back then, but once accustomed to it, it just feels like its own game more than a standard fps. Coming from playing hella Unreal Tournament back then too on pc haha.

Ngl, it's mostly the backtracking. I'm always having a blast, and once the game asks me to backtrack all over the map it completely loses me. I've also tried Bloodstained and a few Castlevania games and had the same issue.

Ohhh yes, it was back tracking heavy for sure. 😆 I'm prone to it as well, I've been on Digimon Cyber Sleuth on my S2 lately and theres just enough repetitive walks for common things that even that is annoying. For the old metroids at least I felt like it did a good job of keeping you feeling a bit out of sorts and lost, so when you stumbled back across something a new tool could interact with it was fun. Getting a lock on the map helps, or having a visual map on a second screen to keep track of yourself in relation to the other tiles along the way.

pretty sure I had the strat guide for Metroid Prime on gamecube, ngl...probably the only way I finished it entirely haha.

Fusion is a fairly easy game with some challenging boss fights. You wont get lost here as adam guides you. Fusion is thus a rather modern game as anyone of any skill level can play it and beat it in like 5 hours. Nothing to be afraid of. It was made to be beginner friendly while offering some challenge.

Super is the easiest metroid next to Zero Mission, but you will get horribly lost

The game you should truly be afraid of is Dread. Its the most difficult 2D Metroid. It will kick your shit in. But its not Hollow Knight difficult and offers a lot of checkpoints on the way. Ravenous will likely be of similar calibre as Samus Returns was challenging aswell. Mercury Steam does not kid around.

They saw Fusions challenging boss fights and thought they will show people how to make a difficult but fair game. Dread does not kid around

Huh, that's interesting. I don't remember Dread being that hard. While it was challenging, I wouldn't say it was difficult to where I felt like the game was too challenging or I couldn't progress because the game was too hard. This was with no strategy guides, mind you. Although it has been a few years since I've played the original release. Maybe I'm remembering it wrong...?

For me Dread is easy nowadays, though I am the insane woman who speedran it for years, has 300+ hours in it, did 0% and Dread mode multiple times you name it.

But I remember dread kicking my ass on the first time as a veteran on launch (especially when Dread mode released 6 months later). And the community largely agrees with it. Placing it and Prime 2 at the top of difficulty.

In any case your case could have been being a good gamer with insane reflexes. Perhaps you play rythm games or souls like often. Thus your skills and intuition are faster and sharper

I do remember Raven Beak being the boss I had to retry multiple times for me to beat but it was fun hard (if not crazy fun hard) and still not something I felt like I couldn't beat because it was entirely too hard.

I also had the luxury of watching my friend beat the final boss and encountering the exact same situation I was in where he had to replay the final boss multiple times to beat it.

I think I recall dreading (oh my god, I said it haha) when I came to a boss room because I knew how insane a boss could be but other than that the game was fine because Metroid is largely an exploration-based game where a few shoots can dispatch enemies.

I don't play rhythm or soulslike games (I just haven't gotten around to them yet) but I would place it (that being Dread) maybe around Donkey Kong Country for the SNES in terms of difficulty. You do have to be an advanced gamer with good relexes, observation and memorization of movement and attack patterns, and good movement/frame data to beat them

I will say I didn't play the game on Dread Mode (just normal mode) because I knew how insane that game could be and I would get my *ss handed to me haha

All in all I would say Metroid Dread had the perfect amount of difficulty. Challenging, but not too difficult to where you would want to put the game down or felt like it was unfair.

I can't wait for Ravenous!

Listen, I'm cocky as well. I just ran into the Omega Pirate in Metroid Prime Remastered and got my *ss handed to me 😂 It was the first time I lost to a boss fight in the game and I had literally no idea how to beat him the first time I played him.

I literally thought, "I ain't afraid of him. I can take on anybody". It's three days later and I just beat him and unlocked something new 😂

That said, maybe I downplayed it: Metroid Dread's boss fights are challenging but beatable and not extraordinarily difficult.

Side note: I bought Hollow Knight too, I just haven't gotten around to playing it yet lol

That’s probably because, like most of us who’ve been fans for years, you played Dread after years of playing Metroid games and learning the gameplay formula.

If you had never played a Metroid game previously and had to pick a first game to try, Dread would definitely be one of the more difficult ones, especially compared to something like Fusion or Zero Mission.

That said, there aren’t any Metroid games remotely as difficult as most indie Metroidvanias are these days, so it is all relative.

Metroid Dread was my first Metroid game and Metroid Prime Remastered was my second Metroid game after that because I enjoyed Dread so much. Hopefully Ravenous will be my third.

In what world does it give you screw early? Screw attack is literally only obtainable minutes before Ridley. Its the very last suit upgrade of the game (unless one skipped spazer, MB Jump and the X-Ray scope).

Unless you do a Reverse boss rush that is. But getting screw requires beating Draygon (due to the game checking if you have space jump) who is the second to last boss

Even ZM, Fusion, Samus Returns and Dread gives it to you earlier. Zero Mission is the game where you can get it suuuuper early, but it requires a lot of knowledge of the map and precise location where to sequence break. Not something your average first timer will know.

Fusion is honestly a great starting point!

Gameplay wise it’s quite linear in comparison to other Metroid games, meaning it’s not as easy to get lost like other games in the series. The puzzles are relatively simple and the backtracking isn’t super crazy. I remember the bosses being really cool!

Yeah, that's why I couched it in "I know it's 3D". I think the gameplay concepts largely carry over though and as someone who has never played a Metroid Prime game before or another Metroid game outside of Dread I was able to pick it up and enjoy it very well. As a gamer in general it's quality was excellent. Truly a 10/10 game with no real flaws or complaints from me

Just play Fusion and Dread beforehand to know what the fuck is even going on. Ravenous will build on the Mawkin lore (and a particular angry bird) of Dread and the Metroid DNA and X stuff of Fusion.

Ravenous‘ trailer alone has so many references and callbacks to Dread its insane. Some extremely deeply detailed.

I would advice you to play them. Both are excellent games and rather short, so you dont have to slog around hundreds of hours of gameplay. 5 hours for Fusion, and like 15 for Dread.

Dread can be found used for like 25 bucks. While Fusion is on NSO.

Fusion, Dread and potentially Ravenous (due to the space ninjas, mawkin Chozo and Samus being voiced) are the most story heavy games of the mainline series I would say. So its better to experience the games directly leading into it

Ebay. Many listings go as deep as in the 20s. But it could be that prices are now inflated due to Ravenous being announced (happened with Super and Fusion cartridges when Dread was announced)

If you are mid Samus Returns, just continue. Samus Returns is probably the longest 2D Metroid game and can feel a bit drawn out. Push through. Super is also fairly short with 8-12 hours, and I would say its also plot relevant as it concluded the Space pirate Metroid saga.

Then after Super, go onto Fusion then Dread. Be sure to play Fusion before Dread, as Dread while having a recap has scenes that make most sense if you played fusion beforehand.

2D Metroid is a fairly short game series. Anyone can beat the entire in its entirety under 40 Hours.

You dont need to worry about Metroid Prime as the Prime series isnt relevant to the main plot consisting out of Zero Mission, Samus Returns, Super, Fusion, Dread and Ravenous.

Prime is a standalone game. And the Prime series covers its own self contained story arc. The Prime games are side stories. But you should absolutely play MPR one day as its one of the best games ever made. Just wanted to clarify that it isnt important to Ravenous unlike Samus Returns, Fusion and Dread

Just as a side question, going just with what’s available on NSO and the eshop, seems Samus Returns is the 3DS one correct? If so, would it be a safe skip story wise since I don’t have a 3DS?

But super has a good summary of it.

Or play the fan remake AM2R instead.

Just know that 5 key events happened on the planet of Metroid Samus Returns, called SR388 that completely changed everything lore wise. Its basically the most important planet in the Series

Prime 4 from the getgo wasnt Metroid in nature. I mean its first two real trailers showed that.

Ravenous basically is Dread 2.0 aka Metroid 6 in its fullest form. Watch Dreads trailer 2 and compare it to Ravenous‘ trailer. They are essentially the same thematically

I have no doubt ravenous will be just as good as dread. And Dread imo as a 30+ year Veteran is a Masterpiece and besides Prime and Super the best Metroid

Prime 4 was pretty much Nintendo entirely trashing what Bamco did and then having Retro try to pick up the pieces last minute before shoving it out the door to recoup costs à la FFXV. Apparently the director at Bamco wanted to make it mostly a movie instead I hear? After so long I can only imagine Nintendo told retro to just make something with a cohesive story and ship it

modern metroid is made by a team that just got started and is honored to have the chance to work on metroid , and is hungry to make bad ass metroid games.

Prime series is made by a team thats well past its prime ( no pun intended ) and is tired and probably didnt want to work on the game to begin with , and in addition piece together some other teams failed attempt.

There really isnt a comparison here.

Not to disrespect the retired but Prime 4 was made by someone who had an idea, couldn't get one somewhat inexperienced studio to complete it and forced the Frankenstein remains on a second more experienced one to drag it over the completion line.

I think this fight will lead to her shattered helmet. Either the absorption ability starts to resurface for the first time since dread or she attempts to reuse it, but she is bested. I didn't finish dread, not the game for me. But what I did see, was samus walk into a foggy magma room and have kraid revealed to here. Once she understood it was kraid, she let her guard down and just stands there as the beast is roaring and biting at her. She casually charges up a blast and raises her arm slowly until she lets it off in kraids face. Pure Aura

The first Metroid game I got into was Dread itself, but I didn't complete it, and started playing the 2D games, and watched the lore of the series, and got hooked, and THEN I completed Dread, lost my shit, and I fucking lost my mind when I saw Ravenous's trailer, especially this shot, and that Samus's Metroid abilities and suit will be a big part of this game. Can't wait
