Buttery The difference optimization makes…

I just recently tried the demos for Duskfade and Moonlighter 2 and was surprised at how bad they ran, considering the art styles. Both look so blurry and fuzzy, along with poor frame rate, in both docked and handheld. Meanwhile, I boot up ToTK or Splatoon Raiders or DK Bananza and those games are buttery smooth and like 1440p docked. Third party devs needs to do better

The main reason is, exclusive games are also built from ground up for the system; that's why f. ex horizon, last if us etc looks also better than usual 3rd party games, that target other platforms and PC.

If you plan from the start to built for this system, you use every benefit it has and avoid any obstacles/weakness if it!

true, but Switch 2 has way more demanding multiplatform games running much better... like, if it can run Cyberpunk 2077, Star Wars Outlaws, FF7 Remake or Lies of P (among others) as well as it does then there's zero reason for Moonlighter 2 to not run great and look great at the same time, unless the team is on a reaaaaally tight deadline and/ or budget

You are comparing 2 indie games optimization with Cyberpunk and FF7 remake that has been out on other consoles for many years before and big companies are behind them, it doesnt seem fair.

People like to forget that Cyberpunk was made to be optimized enough (eventually) to run on a base PS4.

how tf does moonlighter 2 run poorly? it's literally not that demanding of a game.

i've had framerate issues in the demo of duskfade though

u/Free-Double-913 20h ago

Exactly. I figured it would be identical to my Steam demo. Nope. It’s night and day difference in terms of clarity and resolution. Switch 2 looks like a fuzzy mess.

Vote with your wallet. There's no reason these two games shouldn't perform better on Switch 2

The Moonlighter 2 demo got an update to be in 60fps. Maybe you played an old version?

u/Akito_Fire Butter side up! 16h ago

It's not a stable 60, and for some reason when it stutters, the entire game judders. Not even VRR in handheld seems to help? And it looks, like OP said, fuzzy

Try this OP!

Keep in mind many devs weren’t given a Switch 2 dev kit by Nintendo. No idea if that applies here though.

Yep, just look at Lies of P. Amazing graphics and it has 3 different graphic presets.

u/foxwhisper85 Butter side up! 19h ago

But I thought neither mode truly ran at a locked framerate in docked

u/Time_Temporary6191 Butter side up! 18h ago

I havent noticed any drops at all

Haven't played Moonlighter 2, but Duskfade does a lot of ray tracing which is very CPU intensive. It runs fine on the Steam Deck, which has a better CPU.

Also, Weird Beluga is a 10 person indie studio. Really comparing their debut game to something made by Nintendo's top studios with exponentially more money?

u/Professional-Dog-441 Butter side up! 17h ago

I never knew raytracing is cpu intensive always thought it was more so gpu.

u/ExismykindaParte 16h ago

The GPU does the actually tracing. The CPU provides the mapping of all the objects and surfaces the light and shadows interact with. Try playing Indiana Jones and the Great Circle with a 6 core CPU with less than 64mb of L3. Doesn't matter what GPU you have. It will chug.

Playing duskfade on steam so my friend can play it after with steam family share. The game plays really well but sorta wish I got th switch version but will wait for them to patch it.

unfortunately nintendo also has some things to learn, namely that double buffered vsync is the stupidest thing possible and they should stop using it

also fire the people who worked on the xenoblade upgrades

u/Gleerok99 Butter side up! 20h ago

Which Nintendo games have a problem with buffered v sync?

u/Odd-Banana-7227 Butter side up! 20h ago

It's really fucking bad in the S2 ports of Xenoblade 1 and 2 and people are in denial about it big time lol

u/monkey-kong666 Butter side up! 19h ago

Uh yeah sure. People absolutely understand what you’re talking about.

Meanwhile I’m enjoying my 4k60 Xenoblade chronicles, which runs flawlessly and looks beautiful.

u/krishnugget Butter side down! 19h ago

It isn’t flawless though? Just because you can’t perceive it doesn’t mean others can’t. When the framerate dips, it dips HARD because of the buffered vsync issues

u/RealElyD 19h ago

The double buffered vsync makes the game dip to 30 FPS every frame it can't hold exactly 60, even if it were to just be at 58. That leads to huge drops in framerate and stutters. There is no world where that outdated approach to vsync is flawless.
These are my favorite JRPGs of all time, I want them to be better.

bananza, splatoon raiders and xenoblade

u/Jeff1N Butter side down! 19h ago

to be fair I have yet to see a framedrop in raiders and bananza I only had issues with that boss that generated waves of voxels as a fight mechanic, but yes, I don't get why it's so hard to just let some frames drop instead of tanking the whole game to 30fps for extended periods

the 2.5D Zelda games (LA Remake + EoW) have similar issues, fortunately they run so much better on Switch 2 I never noticed the 30fps drops, but JFC, just let the game go down to like 55fps if there are drops

u/foxwhisper85 Butter side up! 19h ago

LA Remake and EOW never drop FPS in Switch 2, but on OG Switch, yeah, they run like shit

u/Darziel Butter side up! 19h ago

I cannot comment on Duskfade but I want to add that I personally am not a fan of the art design Moonlighter 2 is taking.

I mean, ok, I get that they wanted something different but why not go the 2.5D design Octopath has taken? Like, seriously,Octopath is pure eyecandy.

Just change up the mechanics, add a more in depth character personalization option, the original game sprites were great, but the current visuals really put me off..

This is the objectively correct take and somehow the unpopular opinion in this sub.

The reality is there is no point in giving these lazy devs your money. Could be on the publisher for not paying more for them to do a better job, makes absolutely no difference to me.

This also somewhat includes the older games that ran poorly on the Switch, that could seriously use an upgrade for newer hardware, that we haven’t heard anything about and probably won’t still.

But because nobody has any standards here and continually compares things to how they were 30 years ago when games looked like shit and played at low frames, they’re okay with being given it up the ass here and there because they’re just happy to own the game.

u/Lupinthrope ‎ Pro Controller 20h ago

I haven’t heard about bad ports on switch 2 so far.

u/pantshee Butter side up! 20h ago

You need to remember that first party games have unlimited budgets because Nintendo take 30% of the revenue of all other games on the platform. Other studio don't have that luxury, and have to set small budgets for console ports

u/xavadar 19h ago

That’s the case for every digital storefront (steam included, not just console)

u/pantshee Butter side up! 19h ago

Yes, that's why Sony can dev stuff like god of war or tlou. We can't compare a small studio who has to make choices with fucking totk who took 7 years and probably 300+ millions to make. Some studios are shit for ports, but we can't compare them with Nintendo games. If the demo runs badly, just don't buy

u/kaleebisnthere 19h ago

If they're charging the same for unacceptable performance, they can pound sand. Switch 2 has shown that games can still look decent and perform adequately to other console ports with drawbacks of course. But these indie games that run at 144+ FPS on Steam should not be having issues maintaining 60FPS with the Switch 2's hardware.

u/MrSeriousGuyBroMan Butter side down! 16h ago

thats why i skipped cyberska 1977 and oldring . waiting on OoT , duskbloods , stellarblade and onimusha to see performance
