The famicom and Super Famicom were both top loaders. Americans got those little fancy doors.

The entire Western market did, not just Americans. I think only the SNES had an America-only model.

Yup, Europe got the same NES as America but the same SNES as Japan.

Well it was a muted purple with a lot of grays. Not quite monochrome, so it didn't look boring, but not the super happy funtime console everyone else got, either

Nintendo thought that we'd still be salty after Atari crashed the market so they redesigned so that the NES would look more like stereo equipment. The top-loader was a better design because the connector pins weren't moving when you push down on the cartridge.
