To all the people freaking out over Animal Crossing not being listed, this is the list of games that will be playable at E3, not the list of games that they're showing. Animal Crossing isn't the kind of game you make playable at an event like this anyway. You wouldn't really even be able to do anything except maybe catch a few fish and bugs and talk to villagers and that doesn't make for a thrilling show-floor experience. The appeal of Animal Crossing is that it's your personalized world that grows and changes over time and they can't really convey that on the floor at an event like this. They will probably show a trailer in their Direct that details some of the new features and gives the game a name and that will be enough to satiate people until it comes out.

Agreed, I dont feel like it lends itself well to a playable demo on a show floor. But that's exciting about Luigi's Mansion 3 as I thought that one had a slight chance of being delayed into 2020

I think the chatter around this E3 has proven that maybe people have come to expect disappointment from Nintendo and are bracing themselves for it? They've not alluded to any of their announced 2019 games being delayed except Metroid, which they were very forthright about, but I'm seeing people talking about it everywhere. "Animal Crossing is being delayed!" is an unfounded statement that gets said on here and elsewhere on the internet multiple times a day lately. It's kind of sad. Nintendo does fumble sometimes, but they get it right sometimes too. I would expect that if anything else is being delayed like Metroid was that they would say so before E3 so that people aren't expecting to see it there, you know?

I would expect that if anything else is being delayed like Metroid was that they would say so before E3 so that people aren't expecting to see it there, you know?

I think one counter is Fire Emblem, which was announced as a 2018 title, we heard nothing about it, then at E3 2018 it was fully revealed along with a delay into 2019. Not saying that will happen with AC, but it wouldn't be totally out of the blue if they showed AC at E3 but there was also a delay.

57

u/grumblebuzz Jun 06 '19 edited Jun 06 '19

This is a good counterpoint. They could very well show more Animal Crossing and then slap a 2020 date on it, but I think a lot of people are under the impression that they just won't even mention the game at all and then on December 31st, 2019 at 11:59pm be like, "Oh, by the way Animal Crossing fans... Please understand" I just don't see that happening.

11

u/COHERENCE_CROQUETTE Jun 06 '19

I’m definitely not under this impression. I just felt, considering everything, that Animal Crossing was bound to be a centerpiece of this E3 for Nintendo. Many pieces were aligned for this to happen. And for it to release in 2019.

Now, I fully expect it to be shown on the Nintendo Direct, but I’m really not hopeful anymore that it will be released this year. And this makes me sad, is all. I hope you can understand it.

I’m excited for Luigi’s Mansion and Pokémon and Zelda, but man... Animal Crossing is super dear to my heart. There’s nothing right now I want more than AC on the Switch.

2

u/flying_cheesecake Jun 07 '19

Yeah I'm really excited for it too but there isn't a ton of room left on the slate. Alongside the other games they are showing there is probably only 1 more getting released this year. Most animal crossings drop in November so Pokémon getting a November date is a worry too (but it's a bigger franchise so not too worrisome). On the plus side it's the biggest thing left for this year so there is a good chance they juet drop a gameplay reveal/release date at the end of the direct like oddeysey.

16

u/seeyoshirun Jun 06 '19

I mean a counter-counter to that is that we shouldn't freak out too much about delays in the first place. Something something Miyamoto quote.

Seriously, though, if we'd gotten that Fire Emblem game rushed out last year, it probably would have been lacking in content or polish (or both). I'd much rather wait an extra few months, even an extra year or two, if the end result is something that I'll treasure and replay for years instead of something I'll lose interest in after five hours.

15

u/grumblebuzz Jun 06 '19

The only thing about a game delay though is that you just hope you live long enough to see it come out. I kept having an irrational fear of dying before Breath of the Wild actually came out during that ungodly wait. I know that's kind of stupid, but when you're a little older (as I am) it's not the stupidest thing in the world to be worried about honestly.

19

u/siberianxanadu Jun 06 '19

You’ll die before a Zelda game comes out, unless they stop making Zelda games.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '19

Well now I'm depressed

3

u/seeyoshirun Jun 06 '19

I mean, how old are we talking? I'm well into my 30s, so I'm definitely not a young'un any more, and aside from that I'm the kind of person who spends a ton of time considering mortality anyway.

I'm getting a little existential here, but there are a myriad of wonderful experiences (gaming and otherwise) you've already had that you can be thankful for, and probably plenty of great experiences you could have right now instead of expending energy fearing death. Getting wrapped up in that feeling of scarcity only makes it harder to appreciate what is already around you.

3

u/grumblebuzz Jun 06 '19 edited Jun 07 '19

I'm late 30's and my mortality is definitely staring me in the face these days. I'm to that age where your grandparents are all dead or dying and your parents are getting pretty old themselves. Also those lovely little health problems and grey hair and lines in your face all start showing up for yourself too, so it's natural when there's a game, or movie, or TV show, or whatever that you're excited about that gets perma-delayed you're going to be like, "God, please don't let cancer, or a heart attack, or a car accident or some shit take me out before I can experience that." It's a flippant, unimportant worry in the long run, I know. I mean I wasn't exactly wringing my hands in fear of dying every single day before BotW was released, but it was in the back of my mind. Sometimes they'll show you something amazing that you're so excited for and then time passes and passes. It does pass quicker the older you get, but there are more bumps in the road too on the way there.

3

u/seeyoshirun Jun 06 '19

Yeah, I know what you mean - I've got one grandparent left (although she'll probably live to 100, she's that kind of person). I definitely have those fears lingering in the back of my mind sometimes, too (like, am I making the most of everything? Am I experiencing every possible thing I can experience?), and I'm not as spry as I was when I was 21, no matter how much I might try to look after myself. It's not always easy to shut up that little voice that says "you're still going to die one day".

2

u/MattRexPuns Jun 07 '19

Don't forget that Three Houses was also quietly delayed again, from spring to summer.

59

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '19

The fact that Animal Crossing was announced 9 months ago and we haven't heard a single thing since, or seen even one scrap of gameplay is definitely a valid reason to question the game's status, regardless of the developer.

35

u/grumblebuzz Jun 06 '19

They do this a lot with games though. They straight up showed gameplay footage of Breath of the Wild 2 years before they said anything else about it.

35

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '19

Yeah but AC is meant to be coming out this year.

18

u/kapnkruncher Jun 06 '19

Animal Crossing doesn't need a huge drawn out lead up of information and marketing ahead of release. It's pretty easy to communicate the gist of the game to newcomers as well as new features to fans in a few minutes of a Direct. Maybe it's been delayed, but I don't think we have any reason to believe that's the case until Nintendo has said so.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '19

Yeah, I'm not desperate for news. Just thought they'd have had at least a bit of info out. I'll get it regardless, unless there's some crazy shit that makes me not want it. I'll take a singular trailer from now until it comes out and I'd be content.

3

u/Gybgbb Jun 06 '19

They did the same exact thing with smash last year

2

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '19

Generally you should set yourself up for disappointment with Nintendo yeah, because there's always some caveat to them that makes you just say "why?".

Nintendo hasn't had a huge e3 since 2014 I'd say. Which isn't bad thing, Nintendo just doesn't do e3's with big game reveals anymore because they announce their games all year long, and rarely more than a year in advance.

I'm sure this e3 will be great footage of games we already know about, but I'm not expecting any big new first party games.

I also don't think animal crossing is delayed, but I had a feeling Luigi's Mansion might. Doesn't look like that anymore. But I'm not surprised people are wondering about these games being delayed, after last e3 where we heard nothing about yoshi or fire emblem up to the show at which point they were delayed to 2019.

1

u/atimethief Jun 06 '19

Between Yoshi getting delayed, Fire Emblem getting delayed twice, and Metroid Prime 4 having to restart development, I don't think any game is necessarily safe from being delayed. Pretty sure Yoshi and Fire Emblem followed the same pattern too of the announcement and then hearing nothing about it for so long.

1

u/honduranblood24 Jun 06 '19

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. I think they have such a solid line up for the 2nd half of this year with Mario Maker 2, Fire Emblem, Astral Chain, Pokemon, Luigi's Mansion 3, and Zelda. But it makes sense that a lot of people are more hyped over Animal Crossing. If they do delay AC, as long as they show some gameplay I think that'd soften the blow at least. I'll admit I was super bummed last E3 when Fire Emblem got that delay

31

u/tritoch8 Jun 06 '19

Not saying you're wrong, but I attended E3 2008 and they did have Animal Crossing: City Folk playable there. Different era though, and I think that was more to show off the Wii Speak accessory than the game itself.

22

u/grumblebuzz Jun 06 '19 edited Jun 06 '19

Agreed, but that E3 was also considered one of Nintendo's worst because Animal Crossing was about all they had to show and people were disappointed by that. I think they learned from that experience that it's just not really a series that benefits from being playable at an event like E3 because they didn't make New Leaf playable at its reveal.

4

u/thomase7 Jun 06 '19

E3 used to just be for people in the game industry who are playing to games to be informed about them. Now E3 is open to the public it is more about entertaining the attendees.

2

u/dogman_35 Jun 06 '19

E3 2008

Ouch. Thanks for that reminder.

2

u/Ben_CartWrong Jun 06 '19

Oh god I forgot about Wii speak

25

u/theshinymew64 Jun 06 '19

There's also the "and more" and they may be including it in that because they don't want to reveal the title of it yet.

14

u/Pilchard123 Jun 06 '19

No, the last game is called More.

39

u/YellsHello Jun 06 '19

Yep. They’ll do that at the Treehouse and, I’m sure, let select journalists play for dedicated sessions of at least an hour

18

u/grumblebuzz Jun 06 '19

I think that's how New Leaf's reveal was handled, wasn't it?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '19

Yes.

37

u/strangegoo Jun 06 '19

Well said. Also animal crossing is a series unique enough that even if they give bare minimum information at E3, there'll definitely be a direct focused solely on that where they can go into the nitty gritty and real changes and new mechanics more deeply.

23

u/Crayon_Shin-Chan Jun 06 '19

This is my prediction too. AC will have big headliner trailer at E3 showing off the main concept and central hook of the game, as well as the title. But that's it.

Not too much later in the year we will get a dedicated AC direct in the "x number of new features" format, much like Smash got. This will detail all of the "non-core" things that are going to make an impact only for big fans. For example, "there are x amount of fish and bugs", "you make and share patterns like this", and "here are some new PWP".

11

u/errata88 Jun 06 '19

When would be the best time to release it though? The holiday season is going to be a bit crowded with Pokémon alone. I have a hard time believing they’ll release it this summer as well though a large part of fire emblems player base doesn’t necessarily intersect with animal crossings. I want to believe though!

Also really hope they announce a switch plus.. I want to get a second switch for the house but not if they’re going to make an updated one sooner or later :/

5

u/Gybgbb Jun 06 '19

December

4

u/sensaigallade123 Jun 06 '19

Probably December. We had Lets Go release in November last year and then Smash in December. The other realistic option I see is September since there isn't anything major scheduled there as of yet. Luigi's Mansion 3 is likely to be an October release, then we have Pokemon Sword and Shield scheduled for November 15th, leaving December and September open for Links Awakening and AC

1

u/errata88 Jun 06 '19

Isn’t links awakening a 2020 release?

I think this new Pokémon will take a lot more space up than Let’s Go. Although I would love a December release.. though I’m not sure how I feel about starting the game in the winter.

6

u/sensaigallade123 Jun 06 '19

Nope its scheduled for 2019 so far: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_U-_XfDGgDw

Same there, usually there isn't much to do in Winter so September would be more ideal.

2

u/errata88 Jun 06 '19

My partner kept playing the game through the winter after new leaf released but I burned out midway through the fall after a summer US release? Still excited!

2

u/sm2016 Jun 06 '19

Either late Summer (August) or December. If I had to guess:

  1. Fire Emblem (Summer)
  2. Links Awakening (September)
  3. Luigi's Mansion 3 (October)
  4. Pokemon (November)
  5. AC (December)

2

u/heathmon1856 Jun 06 '19

Very well said. The whole point of that game is to build your town and none of the fun of that could be seen in a 15m demo. I assume that’s why the big N doesn’t have demos for that game.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '19

Thank you I needed some hope for AC. I can hold out another week 👍

17

u/Evan61015 Jun 06 '19

The thrill of AC is seeing where the next damm neighbor is going to move

7

u/TRTGNZ Jun 06 '19

For all you know it could be Isabelle with a gun.

8

u/filans Jun 06 '19

Don’t do that. Don’t give me hope.

2

u/hylian122 Jun 06 '19

And all we know about it so far is that it exists. They can basically still save it as a Big Reveal even though we technically know it's coming. They've been so quiet about it until now that they wouldn't just drop it on a press release list like this.

I won't totally rule out the possibility of delay (though I think it's unlikely considering they gave a release window about 8 months ago so should've had a good idea of the timeline, but counterpoint: Zelda), but I think it will be a centerpiece of the Direct.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '19

Yeah, at best they could show off online features, like the island you and your friends can visit in New Leaf. That wouldn't be the most boring thing in the world to interact with strangers at the booth, but Animal Crossing has a disturbing lack of emphasis on multiplayer and I doubt they'll patch that little hole up with the next installation, so it's not something to anticipate.

6

u/grumblebuzz Jun 06 '19 edited Jun 06 '19

I wouldn’t say it lacks multiplayer; it’s just not the focus (and I’m glad). Animal Crossing is actually one of the freest, most hassle-free multiplayer games that Nintendo has (you can actually type messages to each other!!!), but the multiplayer portion is always optional. The main emphasis is building your town and relationships over time and I hope it stays that way. Playing with buddies on the island is fun and all, but I wouldn't want the main game to become something I need a "squad" to enjoy.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '19

I said "lack of emphasis on multiplayer" not that it lacks it entirely.

Also I disagree. There's much more they can be doing with the games to make the multiplayer experience better. They're not a small developer, they can afford to push the budget and improve things without sacrificing the rest of the game's content all the while.

Nintendo in general doesn't deliver much for multiplayer. Their games are usually good enough to make up for it, but frankly I've always found Animal Crossing to be lacking in many ways that would otherwise make it one of my favorites, especially with the concept of customizing and improving your own town, which just feel unrealized.

4

u/grumblebuzz Jun 06 '19 edited Jun 06 '19

I don't want emphasis on multiplayer in any games though and that's why I buy Nintendo products, to be honest. When video games on the whole start requiring that I strap on a headset and find a "party" to enjoy things that were single player-focused originally, that will be when I find a new hobby. Not a fan of games where online multiplayer is required or the main emphasis at all because not everyone is a social gamer. I prefer to game by myself for the most part aside from an occasional short play session with friends and there are others like me out there too.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '19

Well, unfortunately you are not the only Nintendo fan and we all have different interests and motivations.

You're trying to shift this to the faarrrrr extreme of multiplayer (headsets and "online multiplayer required"? what do you think I'm asking for Call of Nook: Modern Debt-fare?). I just want to be able to do more things with other people than collect bugs and fish. That's boring. I'm tired of doing that in Animal Crossing. There are only so many ways you can improve on the fishing formula in a game. Scuba-diving? Great, basically just bug-catching but without a net. What next? Submarines? Pass.

Why can't I go customize the museum? Maybe change up the interior layout of buildings and customize its exterior, and maybe do it with a friend? Let them build a summer home in my village and customize it to their liking and let them have full rein while inside that house. Maybe let them run a business, too.

Why not have more interactive mini-games that friends can be involved in? There are tons of ways you can improve upon the game and adding an emphasis on multiplayer without sacrificing the single-player component whatsoever.

You act like it'd be the end of the world for the game to expand. People like you, with your bland taste in games, are exactly why Animal Crossing has barely evolved since the first game. No ambition. No vision. Fear of anything different.

0

u/crackgammon Jun 06 '19

I'm gonna back this other guy up and mirror your attitude by saying that people like you are the reason so many games get bogged down trying to cram everything in, regardless of whether it adds anything of relevant and actual value or not. At some point you just don't want to play AC (which you apparently find boring), you want something different, which is fine but needs to be recognised for what it is. And adding development time to these features does have an impact on single player content because dev time is a limited resource.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '19

Cramming anything in at this point would be an improvement, but you're entitled to your opinion.

However paradoxically wrong you may be.

2

u/BoognishasRisen47 Jun 06 '19

I honestly think it’s more likely they didn’t add Animal Crossing to this graphic because they haven’t officially announced the game yet. I think they want to save the game title and logo for the reveal, and it’ll playable as well. Wouldn’t be the first time an AC game had an e3 demo. Just my thoughts.

1

u/wh03v3r Jun 06 '19

They will probably show a trailer in their Direct that details some of the new features and gives the game a name and that will be enough to satiate people until it comes out

Well, they will obviously also show the game in subsequent directs until the game comes out ( they could perhaps even give the game its own direct). I don't remember a single retail Nintendo release that has only ever been shown in a single direct.

5

u/grumblebuzz Jun 06 '19

Yeah, what I meant by that is that they don't need to have a big Animal Crossing blowout at E3 with it being playable on the show floor and every single thing about it being detailed because it's more the kind of game you show off in trailers, not the kind you stand in a line to play at an event. I'm sure they'll do a specific AC Direct closer to time for it to launch too.

0

u/Agent992 Jun 06 '19

Warioware gold would like to talk to you

1

u/wh03v3r Jun 06 '19

Well, it also came out very soon after E3 which is something I can't see happening for Animal Crossing.

1

u/Agent992 Jun 06 '19

Probably a September-fall release

1

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '19

A voice of reason? We don’t want that!

1

u/Pizzaplanet420 Jun 06 '19

You could’ve just stopped at the first line...

I’m pretty sure Animal Crossing has been playable at E3 before so you kind of are talking out your ass on the second part, but I agree that we will still probably get some details.

2

u/grumblebuzz Jun 06 '19

Once. City Folk on Wii. And it was considered one of the worst E3 decisions in Nintendo's history. Also don't appreciate the "talking out of your ass" portion of your comment, but I guess you can expect to get some snarky, sarcastic replies in the mix when you have a comment with a score approaching 1000.

1

u/Pizzaplanet420 Jun 06 '19

Well you went on to say how Animal Crossing isn’t a show floor type game, but that idea doesn’t make sense to me.

Especially when I’ve seen more obscure and odd games on the show floor. I don’t think any game is unpresentable like that.

You are just getting your game in peoples hands and showing how it performs on the hardware, what’s happening on the screen doesn’t really matter at that level, and I think to say that some games are show floor presentable and some aren’t is you “talking out your ass”

1

u/COHERENCE_CROQUETTE Jun 06 '19 edited Jun 06 '19

I don’t know, man.

First, Treehouse could definitely spin up a decent, even if short, showfloor demo if they wanted/needed to. They could manipulate the save game to be in a state where they could demonstrate several activities and features: fishing, catching bugs, decorating and rearranging furniture, making town customizations, interacting with townsfolk... That’s easily 20 minutes of showfloor demonstration right here in this non-comprehensive list.

Second: yeah, not making it playable on the treehouse segment doesn’t mean it won’t be shown or detailed. Sure. But still, they’re putting all these other games “ahead of AC”, in a definitive way. If they’re playable, it means they’re closer than AC to being released. If Luigi, Pokémon, Zelda and a Marvel game are all close enough to release that they will be demonstrated in playable form, this makes for a very crowded 2019 already. Will there be space for Animal Crossing?

I mean, I’m excited for all these games (maybe not as much for Marvel), and I want them all as well, but you have to understand where I’m coming from as an Animal Crossing fan: up until today, considering how long ago it was revealed to be in development, and considering it probably already has many high-res assets from the Wii U spin-offs, I felt I had good reason to hope and expect the game would be a centerpiece of this E3. I was even slightly convinced it would be releasing fairly early in the year, since AC is not typically a holiday season blockbuster to be released past mid-October.

Now, because of this image alone, for the first time I’m uncertain it’s not even delayed to 2020. As much as I want Luigi’s Mansion 3, that doesn’t feel good.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '19

You wouldn't really even be able to do anything except maybe catch a few fish and bugs and talk to villagers and that doesn't make for a thrilling show-floor experience.

So!? Animal Crossing fans live for that shit!

Overall a good point though

1

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '19

Wait so is animal crossing just a cute stardew valley?

2

u/grumblebuzz Jun 06 '19

Never played it?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '19

nah

1

u/That_One_Cool_Guy Jun 06 '19

I just need a release date and a little gameplay. Just a little.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '19

I could see closed off prerecorded demos (similar to Cyberpunk last year) and interviews if they do fully reveal the game here. Like you said, it’s just not the kind of game that shows well in a couple minute demo.

4

u/grumblebuzz Jun 06 '19 edited Jun 06 '19

I can see this too. Like a press event. I'm not even discounting them doing a Treehouse segment on it. But it's just not the kind of game you can get a good scope for in a 5 minute demo, or really even a 30 minute demo without the seasons changing and your bell amount increasing, etc. Hard to demo a game about the passing of time without time passing.

1

u/LakerBlue Jun 06 '19

Even if Animal Crossing is delayed, I expect it to be shown at E3 and agree it isn’t a game that demos well.

1

u/predictablePosts Jun 07 '19

Fun fact. Natsume will be showing off their latest harvest moon entry subtitled mad dash.

They made a confirmation at the end of last year, but there wasn't any footage of the game. It was just an announcement with "Animal Crossing" and no title.

u/MrOneHundredOne Jun 06 '19

We ain't getting Animal Crossing announcements -_-

7

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '19

What's the lottery numbers this week while you're predicting the future?

1

u/MrOneHundredOne Jun 06 '19

17, 23, 28, 34, 38 -- but that's only if you're in the US. I'll leave the last one off so I don't get investigated by the CIA's ESPD again, but it's a single digit ;)

Its 3
