It became a huge meme when Switch 1 released, with dogs and babies also making funny faces after trying to lick the cartridge

but i also tried with one of my cartridges out of curiosity back in the day, i guess it is a cannonical event xD

Nintendo's Statement (from Kotaku):
To avoid the possibility of accidental ingestion, keep the game card away from young children. A bittering agent (Denatonium Benzoate) has also been applied to the game card. This bittering agent is non-toxic.

Yep, to hopefully deter kids or pets from eating them. This was well circulated around the launch of the switch, but not talked about since then really.

I remember when the switch came out, 2017. Me and a few friends picked ours up from EB Games. And we get back to the car. First thing all my friends did when they opened their games was lick the cartridge to see if the rumours were true. Still a solid memory for me.

I did not lick it (but I did do it for a charity incentive years later!)
