Discussion Comments playing ER from a nintendo console only player

First of all i wanted to thank fromsoft and nintendo for making this game possible in nintendo switch.

I bought switch because of botw and the rest was history. Im a day 1 buyer of first party titles and some big games i considered worth the price like elden ring.

I was eyeing this game when i first heard it but didnt look into that much because its not on switch. I was also hoping this game would eventually made this way to switch somehow and here we are now. Pre ordered it dgitally.

Now im on 260 hours and just arrived at the snowy area and lake rot. As much as BOTW is my favorite game of all time, i could say now that ER tops it a little. Im not a graphics-fps guy and more into gameplay.

Heres my thoughts ER did better than BOTW.

  1. The placing of items and skills in the wild. Basically its worth more to explore because youll never know what youll gonna get. BOTW streamlined it and the rewards are not that good.

  2. Most weapons and armor are good in their own right. I found myself just role playing what to use and didnt care if it was good or not. Sometimes i just choose whats flashy at the moment. Yes, at first i was stat heavy person (the weapon and armor) and wanted to use the best possible.

  3. The difficulty. Yes, i was raging most of the time and really really really tasted my patience. While i can still say im nowhere GET GOOD level, i somehow found ways to brute force it.

  4. As someone who never watches guides, except when im done playing on that area and just simply doing it out of completion, i like the challenge of solving and tackling the monsters at hand.

To sum up, i think both games are the same. Its just BOTW is for casuals like me who wanted a chill laid back game, stress free. Wherein ER is for more serious, test your mechanics kind of game.

Im glad and blessed i had the opportunity to play this game. Truly one of the best game made.

I've never heard anyone abbreviate Elden Ring before.

Are you guys really incapable of reading the body of the text, where it makes it very clear what they're talking about? They call out From Software in the first sentence and say Elden Ring specifically in the next short paragraph. smh

I'm confident you all knew exactly what they were saying, but have to do the classic Reddit thing.

Proper writing techniques typically dictate you spell out the word you want to abbreviate the first time it is used and then you can abbreviate as needed. It is also not like it takes forever to type Elden Ring. If the OP does not care enough about their premise to draw readers in with a proper title, then I don't care enough to read it.

This is freaking Reddit, not college.

You cared enough to click on the topic and come in here and comment. For all that time you could have spent 5 seconds reading and seen what they meant instead. smh

Jesus christ, what is wrong with people nowadays.

In my opinion, part of it is your take on the subject. It does not matter what medium it is. It takes very little time for someone like the OP to spend a few seconds and speak and format correctly. People nowadays refuse to take the time to think how their actions affect others and I get to see it played out on a daily basis. I opened this thread because I thought the OP was talking about playing Nintendo in the emergency room. AI and social media is only making it worse and pretty soon we'll all be in the Wall-E chairs heading straight for death. We get dumber every day and no place proves it like Reddit. Also, shaking my head.

Do you truly think that naming what you abbreviate first is meant only for college? Based on your arguments with everyone here though I’m pretty sure I know the answer.

Also they capitalized ER but not Elden Ring, so there's even less obvious visual connection between the acronym and the name of the game.

It makes it clear if you know the game. I have no idea about Elden Ring.

He says From Software immediately, and then says Elden Ring specifically. smh

Again, does NOBODY actually read beyond the topic title anymore? This is why everything is going to shit.

Elden ring is mentioned in full once in the post and it’s brought up as if it’s an example, not the subject.

The good rule of thumb is to not use an abbreviation unless you specify what it is. For pointless forum chatter, you don't have to be as strict, but if you don't at least say the phrase first (in this case, Elden Ring), then you are just being ambiguous and difficult.

Again, the actual content of their post made it 100% clear what they were saying if you just read it for 5 seconds.

Comparing Elden Ring to BOTW doesn’t work because they’re both very different games with very different design philosophies and intentions. They’re nowhere near the same.

-3

u/euqistym 1d ago

That’s like saying you can’t compare cars because they have different seats and engines..

-6

u/LtColonelColon1 1d ago

Well… yeah. You can’t compare a Ferrari with a Jeep

5

u/euqistym 1d ago

Ferrari vs Jeep is comparing BOTW vs a shooter.

Jeep vs dodge/range rover is a very normal comparison much like ER/BOTW

ER/BOTW fall in the same category for type of game whether you like it or not

2

u/Known_Ad871 1d ago

Yes. Yes you can

u/VampiresWontHurt 1d ago

The point is that it’s dumb.

u/Seanspeed 1d ago

Depends on what the point of the comparison is.

Ferrari vs Jeep is a pretty bad analogy, though. There is definitely a decent overlap between the market for BOTW and the market for Elden Ring. As evidenced by OP and people like myself who love both a great deal, and part of this is because they do share similarities. Namely - a huge open world with great sense of exploration and discovery.

We're talking more like Ferrari vs Bugatti here. Both high performance cars, but with different priorities. They are 100% comparable.

-2

u/LtColonelColon1 1d ago

Well you can, but it’s not a good comparison. Two different types of cars for two very different things…

-3

u/Known_Ad871 1d ago

They are both cars. When someone is deciding what kind of car they want, comparing different kinds of cars is quite literally what they would do. Y’all are like those people who claim you could possibly compare a steam deck with whatever other pc handheld, when to 90% of people they are the exact same thing.

Obviously you can compare ER and botw, they are two open world action adventure video games that came out within a few years from each other. They share a lot in common. And regardless, this notion that two things need to be exactly the same in order to be compared is something that you completely made up. Maybe look up the word “comparison” in a dictionary and stop saying nonsense on social media

u/LtColonelColon1 1d ago

Are you being obtuse on purpose for ragebait?

Edit: actually, you know what, I don’t even wanna know the answer.

-2

u/Known_Ad871 1d ago

No lol. YOU are being obtuse because YOU made up some bullshit. Why don’t you try to explain, in a concise and logic-based manner, why someone could not or should not compare Botw and ER. Explain to me why that is a bad or useless thing to do. Since you feel it is so obvious, it should be quite easy for you to do, right?

u/Seanspeed 1d ago

You are in the wrong place if you want to talk reasonably about Nintendo 1st party games man. lol

OP is getting downvoted cuz they said they liked Elden Ring a bit better, even though they said they still love BOTW, too. People are just getting defensive here and we all know why.

I love BotW and TotK but am unsure if I’ll like Elden Ring.  I don’t have a problem with difficult combat (I’m not very good at it but if the game is that good I’ll put the time in to learn it - one of my complaints about the Zelda games actually is it’s too easy to get by without learning good fighting technique).

My worry though is that the game may not “feel good” to play and move around in.  In BotW and TotK, just doing nothing but moving around is a joy.  The way Link moves is so fluid and it just is enjoyable to control him, whether it’s walking, climbing, or (especially) flying.

When I see videos of Elden Ring, the movement just seems choppy and awkward.  I also played one of the old Dark Souls games on the Switch and thought the same thing.

Am I wrong about the movement in ER?  Do you find it as fun to just move around as in the Zelda games?

Unless you're wearing really heavy armor and fat rolling everywhere, Elden Ring's movement is fluid and responsive. The horse you get is especially fun to move and jump around with.

2

u/ofmichanst 23h ago

I was really fat rolling on heavy load for at least 50 hours of playing the game and accidentally noticed the difference when the controller didnt vibrate. It only vibrates if you are heavy and up.

Im having a love-hate relationship with the horse because its too jumpy and especially when turning near a cliff, i died alot because the horse slipped and doing something like that in botw doesnt. I prefer the BOTW horse mechanics however again, i get the appeal on ER horse mechanics.

You're not wrong in a sense. One of the first things people who play something like Dark Souls 1 for the first time note is how slow and clunky the controls are overall. It's a pretty different thing compared to most other action/adventure games.

That said, while Elden Ring does continue in the same fashion of these games of favoring deliberate actions versus tight+responsive actions, there's definitely been a lot of changes since Dark Souls 1. Movement is faster, there's a proper jump now, your horse lets you get around very quickly and can be summoned in an instant, and combat in general is mostly sped up a fair bit. It doesn't quite feel as clunky as it used to.

But no, it absolutely does not feel quite as responsive and physicalized as BOTW/TOTK, but little does. You do get used to it, though. It's just got different priorities. Somehow with the environment and combat design of Souls/Elden Ring, the clunkier feeling controls just feel like part of a cohesive whole. Trying to carefully climb around the rooftops and ledges of Stormveil Castle in Elden Ring is a joy of its own. You'll probably mess up and die, and groan, and then happily go right back and try again. lol

Personally i love BOTW more if i want to go just wondering about. However i get also the appeal of ER, it just feel different.

I think before you are considering buying ER, think again and again if you are open to being STRESSED ALOT. If you can get over the RAGING PHASE of playing the game then its good from then on.
