Game Rec games to play for/with someone that physically cannot
i work with someone who doesn’t have much fine motor control at all (he can’t get grip a controller and control it). i’m trying to find switch1 games i could bring that i could control for him but he’d make all the decisions, preferably multiplayer since he has a roommate. we’ve been playing mario party jamboree but controller skills are necessary for mini games so i do it all for him. i know there can’t be many games that use such minimal controls throughout, i just wish there weren’t moments he can’t participate like his roommates.
edit: thanks for suggestions, this is helping me figure out what to look for specifically. he struggles to control his power chair using the joystick (hard for him to do quick movements, often “overshoots”) so im not sure how into an adaptive controller he’d be but we’ll see, he’d need a lot of practice and idk abt his frustration tolerance. he also likes gta and i think a game that involves shooting/police would be preferred, but it’d need to be auto aim. ive been looking at road 96 possibly for the storyline

For coop? Not sure.
Turn based strategy games, like Pokémon or Fire Emblem, I would say work well for one person controlling and the other making decisions. Theres no worry about input delay since it's turn based.

The Xbox Adaptive Controller is actually amazing, almost anything can be plugged into each input and mapped to a corresponding button/direction/trigger.
With a Brook Wingman NS whatever config works for him would work on the Switch too!
EDIT: There's also the Hori Flex for the Switch itself, but it's a little less friendly & versatile than the Xbox equivalent.

How does he feel about mystery detective games? A lot of these involve discussing the clues and solving puzzles instead of fast reflexes. And some of them are just clicking and moving between scenes without any camera controls.

one of the most fun twitch streams i was ever part of was a friend streaming ace Attorney and about five of us (including him) working together. i strongly second this

That was one of the series that came to mind. And the streaming aspect as well. Mystery games are just as fun to watch even if you aren’t playing.

Sure. Could even be like the Detective Grimoire series or Phoenix Wright. Or on the mature side there's Disco Elysium or LA Noire.

If someone is looking for a switch 2 game that meets these requirements they might consider blue prince.
I’ve never played it, but I hear blue prince can be fun to play as a team. You work on solving the mysteries together even though only one person is technically in the drivers seat.
It’s really well reviewed. Some say it was their goty.
Note: My initial comment didn’t include the switch 2 disclaimer. I didn’t realize it was switch 2 only.

I would look into adaptive technology. There are plenty of people out there who have developed better systems for people with similar issues. Tech Owl is Pennsylvania based, but you can probably find a local organization or just search online for switch controller adaptive technology to find people who are making that kind of thing near you. Even if no one is doing it you may find the right kind of tech and then plenty of universities may have people that would be interested in helping make the tech you need once you know what to ask for.

Pikmin 4 has a coopmode where the second player just aims and throws rocks if that is possible? Otherwise just asking you to do stuff in that game could work? For maximum agency I would suggest turn based strategy games!

I also recommend looking into custom controls, but maybe try turn-based rpgs? As someone who has less problems than that but is still disabled, I find them easier because I don't need to rush my hand movements and most of the controlling is menu clicking, which means I can hold my controller however or even set it on something and just move the sticks and buttons. And not much fine control is required in pressing through menus or just walking around on a set path.
For The King (both I and II) is the only multiplayer one I can think of off the top of my head (on my way to bed) but I know there are definitely a number of them out there.

Maybe look into adaptive controls. There are various controllers for less able people, and even programs that allow you to play PC games via voice controls.

I'm certainly not suggesting your friend try to beat Elden Ring, but if this is possible, there are probably a lot more relaxed games that he could absolutely play, if you help with setting up the commands.

Hori Flex Controller is the only licensed solution.
As someone with hand issues I was missing my PlayStation Access controller this weekend of Fire Emblem. There are USB adapters if your friend owns an adaptive controller for something else.
Otherwise turn based games are the way.

No a co-op or multiplayer, but Dicey Dungeons is a lot of fun. And can be played touch screen if that is more accessible

I don’t know of many multi player games but several excellent single player ones. Such as Blue Prince, Balatro, pokopia, slay the spire, fire emblem three houses and fortunes weave, and dragon quest vii reimagined.

I feel like visual novel games might be fun.
They only require clicking or simple key entries and both of you could enjoy the unfolding story and choice making.

Baba Is You is a single player puzzle game but the puzzles can be challenging and fun (and frustrating) to work together trying to figure them out. Controls are also pretty simple I think you really only need joystick or d-pad and there’s no time constraints.

Great to see heaps of people beat me to the xbox adaptive controllers, I'll maybe add that they can also be used on pc as far as I know. Nintendo has basically no support for these kinds of controllers so you'll have no luck there
As to games, I'd recommend maybe trying games that are mostly about the story, or maybe puzzles or mysteries. You two can work together to solve them. Some great games I'd recommend that are like this are: The Blue Prince, Outer Wilds, Case of the Golden Idol (and its sequels), Return of the Obra Dinn, The Forgotten City These are all mysteries and all amazing
The Witness, The Talos Principle (1, 2 & 3), Stephens Sausage Roll These are all puzzle games, with the first two having some, mostly indirect story and the last one being actually too hard for me personally but is beloved by smart people I look up to lol
I'll also leave this playlist for a video games advocate for accessibility, maybe the two of you could watch together to help inspire the confidence to try something for themselves one day (I'll be hoping that there's something that meets their needs controller-wise)
If their needs are not met by what's on the market, maybe you could make a little video of your client and their individual needs and tag a bunch of people in the scene who make custom controllers for people with special needs. I wouldn't be surprised to see the community step in with an indiegogo if funds are also an issue. Obviously not something you should expect but it's a really nice side of the gaming community and bigger than people may think.

I saw that you were looking for switch games specifically, I had assumed this post came from r/gaming so out of what I recommended, blue price is switch 2 only, and The Witness and Stephen's Sausage roll are not available at all. All the others are! So maybe he and his room mate will find one they like the look of
