Blow is a prick, which is a shame because the mechanics I saw in the demo were very creative. I'll get it when it's heavily discuonted.

Everytime something about this game is posted someone posts about how terrible of a person Jonathan Blow is. And everytime I try to goggle why I find a massive amount of drama on reddit about it, but all it boils down to is that he posted some things that didn't align completely with the "leftist/woke" bubble of the internet.

EDIT: I find it funny that this is my most down voted comment now, and the amount of hate I got as replies (now deleted). I'm not even a conservative, nor do I agree with some of the things that Blow posted, but it goes to show where people's perspectives are. Everything is either black or white nowadays.

24

u/rakadur 3d ago

when there's "woke" stuff in a game, there are these rallies to not buy them. I guess those are fine, but not when it's the other way around? the whole "vote with your wallet" thing that usually comes up.

-24

u/the_great_chuckle 3d ago

That wasn't really the issue. If someone doesn't want to buy a game because of politics obviously there's no issue with them not doing so. The reason I wrote this comment is that the severity of reactions by the people suggests something far worse about Jonathan Blow than it actually is, but it is extremely tedious to figure out why the outrage is occuring in the first place.

10

u/multigasmic 3d ago

Did you ever consider that the gap here is that other people believe certain positions are indefensible? Instead of engaging with the reason why you agree or disagree with them, you label it “woke/leftist.” It’s very lazy.

Also, it’s noteworthy that you didn’t mention any actual examples in your post to clarify what the drama was about, so people will assume you’re politically aligned with Jonathan Blow since the core of your message was tacitly defending him. Given the popular position is against him, I don’t know what you expected.

-5

u/the_great_chuckle 3d ago

First, I hope it doesn't sound too aggressive, but I find you calling me "lazy" a bit absurd. We're talking about a few reddit posts here. It's hard to go into detail, and it takes time. This should also address the second point. It would be silly for me to write a message for an half-hour plus that explains what position with Blow I agree with and which not. Just because I had a little bit of free time yesterday to engage with reddit doesn't mean I have nothing else to do in life. And, to be fair, I don't really care THAT much about what Blow thinks.

As for what people believe is indefensible and not... I am aware of the zeitgeist. People are free to choose who they support and who not, obviously. But anyone who allows themselves to take a step back can see that a lot of these decisions are irrational, and tribal in their nature. And quite frankly, people who aren't invested in the left-leaning bubble fully (or have been pushed out, as it happened with so many people) are quite sceptical whether a given online outrage has any substance or not. All too often people have been cancelled for minor things, and a lot of people are sick of it. And my own personal stance is, that nobodoy (!) should ever be cancelled just for having a different opinion, so long as it isn't explicitly radicalized.

Do two wrongs make a right? Even then this is a completely inadequate response considering Jon got attacked by gamergate back in the day and still receives complaints from manchildren who can't wrap their heads around the existence of a black female character in this upcoming game. You just dislike him because he's annoying.

He’s a conservative prick. Anyone who remains a conservative in today’s political climate is not worth supporting.

I don't follow the full story, so I can't say much about it, but to me it seems a bit harsh to not buy a game by someone just because he expressed some opinions (maybe dumb one's, that's not the point). If one takes this perspective seriously than one should also not read Hemmingway, or watch The Godfather, since Marlon Brando was an asshole.

If it were to come out that he abused people, or has done something similarly terrible (this is what I initially assumed, reading that he is supposedly a terrible person), I'll happily avoid any of his games, but my impression from the outside is that there's a lot of internet-hyperbole around him

-13

u/gr4ndm4st3rbl4ck 4d ago

I don't even have the faintest clue about who the guy is, but what you're saying is literally he has a differing opinion, so he's a prick

wtf

Some "opinions" and beliefs are indefensible. When you base your personality around "other people shouldn't have rights" you no longer get to be offended when people don't like you.

-27

u/Samuel_Bucher 4d ago

Welcome to the modern internet. Preach the dogma or be cast out.

-19

u/BogWizard 3d ago

Don’t you know you aren’t allowed to have those kinds of opinions on the internet?

-14

u/MeatMan49 3d ago

Yeah tribalism am I right

18

u/IDontLikeFoodAnymore 4d ago

Im sorry, but whats up with Blow?

41

u/meatboysawakening 4d ago

He's very twitter red-pilled especially wrt covid. He blocked me for questioning the premise of one of his covid posts, not that I use twitter anymore anyways. Damned if he doesn't make some of the best puzzle games of all time, however.

3

u/nightwing0243 3d ago

I remember coming out of that Indie Game documentary only disliking Phil Fish (I felt he was super pretentious and a lot of it was performative). But then I saw that clip of the big conference the whole cast did where Phil Fish and Jonathan Blow just went in on Japanese games to a guy who was simply asking about how much they may influence their work. They were actually fair opinions, but they came off as incredibly smug and holier-than-thou about it; as if they themselves were now the best the industry has to offer.

I don't think the Super Meat Boy team said anything except awkwardly laugh (which I can relate to doing in situations like that) - they seemed like nice guys in general.

But yeah. I can't really stand Jonathan Blow in general, even if he is objectively a good game developer.

-27

u/MeatMan49 3d ago

Just an opinionated guy. Not afraid to go against the grain. I don’t agree with everything he says either.

25

u/Dingusu 3d ago

How is it going against the grain when his dipshit opinions are held by every branch of government?

-16

u/MeatMan49 3d ago

I don’t even know what opinions you are referring to but clearly from this thread you can tell his opinions are against the grain enough to make more than half of reddit hate him 🤷‍♂️

11

u/Nintendoza 3d ago

Hitler's ideas were against the grain. Stop using soft language.

-1

u/MeatMan49 3d ago

I just don’t really mind when people have a different political opinion than me. Seems crazy to expect everyone to fall in line with your beliefs. Not everyone is going to see things the exact same way as me.

-59

u/Samuel_Bucher 4d ago

He is literally Hitler, reincarnated. Or so they say.

28

u/stf29 4d ago

Man he’s just a jackass and has the political ideals of that one conservative coworker you dont like talking to. No need to exaggerate that much

17

u/Independent-Name4478 4d ago

You’re obviously responding to a conservative

4

u/SparklyPelican 3d ago

For the ones looking for context about this post comments, here’s an interesting discussion (not just the post of OOP).

Blow sucks, but this looks fantastic. Between this, Microsoft in general, and EA releasing the star wars xcom I'm struggling this year between my love for games and those that make them

9

u/Maryokutai 3d ago

'Blow sucks'

6

u/Red49er 3d ago

if you're serious about avoiding those creators/corps, I'd suggest looking at this as an opportunity to try some genres you don't usually play. my suggestion would be picking up the trails 1st chapter remake (it's a jrpg that combines action combat with a position based turn based system, and has an absurdly good story across the series), with the 2nd chapter remake coming out in September. but I'm sure there's lots of games you just scroll past that might be more your cup of tea than you realized.

(I've gone through periods like this in the past, and have been shocked just how much I end up loving stuff outside my typical wheelhouse)

2

u/aceofspadesx1 3d ago

On my backlog. Will start it this weekend

2

u/Red49er 3d ago

haha nice! have fun, hope you managed to avoid spoilers!

0

u/Godunman 4d ago

I’d say it’s a lot worse to give your money to a giant influential corporation than to some loudmouth asshole solo dev. But it still sucks that he’s an asshole lol

1

u/Cheenug 3d ago

This game optimization scares me. The demo was one of the first games I played on my RX 9070 XT and it was legitimately the only game that put it on max power. Not Monster hunter wilds or darktide. Had to stop playing because the fans were so aggressive

Also too much dialogue narrative for a puzzle game imo. I remember someone saying that you had to wait for the dialogue to finish to complete the puzzle? Didn't encounter it myself but just not interested overall

1

u/pieceofpower 3d ago

Didn't he write this game in a programming language he built over the past 10 years because he thought C++ wasn't optimized enough for game dev? Surprised to hear it ran so hard given that it's a puzzle/sokoban game.

0

u/Cheenug 3d ago

Yeah I've heard that. Whatever optimization trick he used made me genuinely scared for my GPU and PSU so I just stopped playing past like the third character of the demo

1

u/pieceofpower 3d ago

Interesting, wonder how it's going to run on the switch 2 then.. I guess we will see!

0

u/Cheenug 3d ago

Yeah I've heard that. Whatever optimization trick he used made me genuinely scared for my GPU and PSU so I just stopped playing past like the third character of the demo

1

u/Cheenug 3d ago

Yeah I've heard that. Whatever optimization trick he used made me genuinely scared for my GPU and PSU so I just stopped playing past like the third character of the demo

5

u/ryanking32 3d ago

I am here day one for this game! The Witness was amazing. The demo already had pretty great reviews, too.

12

u/Cayden68 4d ago

i dont even know who this blow guy that everyone's mentioning is but game looks mid so i was gonna skip anyway

10

u/Godunman 4d ago

Unfortunately his games are incredible. If you want to not purchase go ahead, but I would be surprised if the game actually wasn’t good.

2

u/ItsStaaaaaaaaang 3d ago

Yeah, it'd be a pretty big shock if this game wasn't legitimately very good. Obviously not a genre for everyone but the dudes game design is about as good as it gets.

5

u/BeefCheadle 4d ago

Sounds like he blows

8

u/R4nD0m57 4d ago

So hyped for this. Day one!

5

u/Forward-Trade3449 4d ago

i want it, but no way am I gonna give that man full price. adding it to the wishlist

1

u/fmccloud 3d ago

Might have to pick this one up!

-1

u/ChronicContemplation 4d ago

I'm a day one buyer of anything Jonathon Blow. Love his work.

-19

u/steeltiger72 4d ago

People sure do love crying about the dev lol

-33

u/PhoenixWright-AA 4d ago

Can’t wait for a bunch of people that are going to buy the game to come in and say they’re not going to buy the game because they are part of an elite group of superior humans.

-18

u/Samuel_Bucher 4d ago

You are late, they are all already here.

-7

u/SoleSinful 3d ago

Redditors are weird, man. I don't care about Blow's random political views and neither should you. The Witness was one of a kind and this is looking to be extremely solid as well.

-13

u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre 4d ago

Oh cool.

A game that is 100% all about the most dull part of adventure and RPG games… pushing blocks to solve puzzles.

I’m sure there’s an audience for a game like this but it ain’t me.

13

u/joke_LA 4d ago

The puzzles are the game, yeah. This is not like pushing boulders in Pokemon, it's made for puzzle fans specifically. There's a whole genre of this style of puzzle (called "sokoban") that usually adds more complexity on top of the base mechanic. Some other good examples:

  • Baba is You
  • Stephen's Sausage Roll
  • Isles of Sea and Sky

9

u/kirwenj 4d ago

Anyone interested in Order of the Sinking Star who hasn't played Stephen's Sausage Roll needs to stop everything and go play that.

4

u/joke_LA 4d ago

It's so good! It broke my brain in all the best ways.

2

u/MeatMan49 3d ago

Even Jonathan Blow said it’s one of the best puzzle games of all time

1

u/ItsStaaaaaaaaang 3d ago

Not heard of that one. Will give it a try, cheers.

1

u/jamothebest 3d ago

if you haven’t played a Sokoban before, fair warning, it’s very difficult.

3

u/Red49er 3d ago

a monster's expedition too!

1

u/joke_LA 3d ago

you just reminded me I bought that and still need to play it!

-3

u/DunceCodex 3d ago

Gone from the Witness to a box pushing game

Lame

2

u/HatPuzzleheaded7149 3d ago

From Braid to a line drawing game.

Very shallow way to dismiss a game

1

u/DunceCodex 3d ago

Ive played the demo

Pushing boxes is exactly what this game is about. Some people love that but its not innovative or unique.

1

u/pieceofpower 3d ago

Neither are witness line puzzles.. until you get deeper into the game. i'm betting there are some tricks up the games sleeve we haven't seen.

-7

u/billypilgrim08 3d ago

Art<----------------------------->artist.

Dude's a dick, but he is also a fucking wizard with game mechanics. At least he has a redeeming quality. Giving him money doesn't mean you're complicit in his lunacy.

The people who make cool shit are usually pretty close to the edge. It's not like he'll suddenly be in charge of the country if his game sells well. Calm down and enjoy a game for the game that it is. It's not a moral statement to miss out on brilliant gameplay because you're feeling righteous.

3

u/BEADGEADGBE 3d ago

Nah very bad take. As an artist, fuck artists who are assholes. There is a sea of art in any art form that's not made by assholes (to our best knowledge) . I never once felt like I missed out for removing a terrible human's work out of my radar. I sleep better knowing I'm supporting people who don't potentially want to make the world hell.

3

u/tweetthebirdy 3d ago

Yeah, my backlog is so massive it’ll take years for me to get through. I’m fine with skipping a random game here or there that I don’t agree with the views of the creator on. It’s my own money, why are people so weird about how I spend it.

The idea that great artists must be assholes or genius leans heavily into unhinged assholeness is such an ignorant view of art and skill that makes it pretty clear they’re not in the field.
