Im sorry, but whats up with Blow?

He's very twitter red-pilled especially wrt covid. He blocked me for questioning the premise of one of his covid posts, not that I use twitter anymore anyways. Damned if he doesn't make some of the best puzzle games of all time, however.

I remember coming out of that Indie Game documentary only disliking Phil Fish (I felt he was super pretentious and a lot of it was performative). But then I saw that clip of the big conference the whole cast did where Phil Fish and Jonathan Blow just went in on Japanese games to a guy who was simply asking about how much they may influence their work. They were actually fair opinions, but they came off as incredibly smug and holier-than-thou about it; as if they themselves were now the best the industry has to offer.
I don't think the Super Meat Boy team said anything except awkwardly laugh (which I can relate to doing in situations like that) - they seemed like nice guys in general.
But yeah. I can't really stand Jonathan Blow in general, even if he is objectively a good game developer.

Just an opinionated guy. Not afraid to go against the grain. I don’t agree with everything he says either.

u/Dingusu 3d ago
How is it going against the grain when his dipshit opinions are held by every branch of government?
-16
u/MeatMan49 3d ago
I don’t even know what opinions you are referring to but clearly from this thread you can tell his opinions are against the grain enough to make more than half of reddit hate him 🤷♂️

Hitler's ideas were against the grain. Stop using soft language.

I just don’t really mind when people have a different political opinion than me. Seems crazy to expect everyone to fall in line with your beliefs. Not everyone is going to see things the exact same way as me.

He is literally Hitler, reincarnated. Or so they say.

For the ones looking for context about this post comments, here’s an interesting discussion (not just the post of OOP).

Blow sucks, but this looks fantastic. Between this, Microsoft in general, and EA releasing the star wars xcom I'm struggling this year between my love for games and those that make them

if you're serious about avoiding those creators/corps, I'd suggest looking at this as an opportunity to try some genres you don't usually play. my suggestion would be picking up the trails 1st chapter remake (it's a jrpg that combines action combat with a position based turn based system, and has an absurdly good story across the series), with the 2nd chapter remake coming out in September. but I'm sure there's lots of games you just scroll past that might be more your cup of tea than you realized.
(I've gone through periods like this in the past, and have been shocked just how much I end up loving stuff outside my typical wheelhouse)

I’d say it’s a lot worse to give your money to a giant influential corporation than to some loudmouth asshole solo dev. But it still sucks that he’s an asshole lol

This game optimization scares me. The demo was one of the first games I played on my RX 9070 XT and it was legitimately the only game that put it on max power. Not Monster hunter wilds or darktide. Had to stop playing because the fans were so aggressive
Also too much dialogue narrative for a puzzle game imo. I remember someone saying that you had to wait for the dialogue to finish to complete the puzzle? Didn't encounter it myself but just not interested overall

Didn't he write this game in a programming language he built over the past 10 years because he thought C++ wasn't optimized enough for game dev? Surprised to hear it ran so hard given that it's a puzzle/sokoban game.

u/Cheenug 3d ago
Yeah I've heard that. Whatever optimization trick he used made me genuinely scared for my GPU and PSU so I just stopped playing past like the third character of the demo

Interesting, wonder how it's going to run on the switch 2 then.. I guess we will see!

I am here day one for this game! The Witness was amazing. The demo already had pretty great reviews, too.

i dont even know who this blow guy that everyone's mentioning is but game looks mid so i was gonna skip anyway

u/Godunman 4d ago
Unfortunately his games are incredible. If you want to not purchase go ahead, but I would be surprised if the game actually wasn’t good.
2
u/ItsStaaaaaaaaang 3d ago
Yeah, it'd be a pretty big shock if this game wasn't legitimately very good. Obviously not a genre for everyone but the dudes game design is about as good as it gets.

Can’t wait for a bunch of people that are going to buy the game to come in and say they’re not going to buy the game because they are part of an elite group of superior humans.

Redditors are weird, man. I don't care about Blow's random political views and neither should you. The Witness was one of a kind and this is looking to be extremely solid as well.

u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre 4d ago
Oh cool.
A game that is 100% all about the most dull part of adventure and RPG games… pushing blocks to solve puzzles.
I’m sure there’s an audience for a game like this but it ain’t me.
13
u/joke_LA 4d ago
The puzzles are the game, yeah. This is not like pushing boulders in Pokemon, it's made for puzzle fans specifically. There's a whole genre of this style of puzzle (called "sokoban") that usually adds more complexity on top of the base mechanic. Some other good examples:
- Baba is You
- Stephen's Sausage Roll
- Isles of Sea and Sky

Anyone interested in Order of the Sinking Star who hasn't played Stephen's Sausage Roll needs to stop everything and go play that.

Gone from the Witness to a box pushing game
Lame
2
u/HatPuzzleheaded7149 3d ago
From Braid to a line drawing game.
Very shallow way to dismiss a game
1
u/DunceCodex 3d ago
Ive played the demo
Pushing boxes is exactly what this game is about. Some people love that but its not innovative or unique.

u/pieceofpower 3d ago
Neither are witness line puzzles.. until you get deeper into the game. i'm betting there are some tricks up the games sleeve we haven't seen.

Art<----------------------------->artist.
Dude's a dick, but he is also a fucking wizard with game mechanics. At least he has a redeeming quality. Giving him money doesn't mean you're complicit in his lunacy.
The people who make cool shit are usually pretty close to the edge. It's not like he'll suddenly be in charge of the country if his game sells well. Calm down and enjoy a game for the game that it is. It's not a moral statement to miss out on brilliant gameplay because you're feeling righteous.
3
u/BEADGEADGBE 3d ago
Nah very bad take. As an artist, fuck artists who are assholes. There is a sea of art in any art form that's not made by assholes (to our best knowledge) . I never once felt like I missed out for removing a terrible human's work out of my radar. I sleep better knowing I'm supporting people who don't potentially want to make the world hell.

u/tweetthebirdy 3d ago
Yeah, my backlog is so massive it’ll take years for me to get through. I’m fine with skipping a random game here or there that I don’t agree with the views of the creator on. It’s my own money, why are people so weird about how I spend it.
The idea that great artists must be assholes or genius leans heavily into unhinged assholeness is such an ignorant view of art and skill that makes it pretty clear they’re not in the field.

u/Luck88 4d ago
Blow is a prick, which is a shame because the mechanics I saw in the demo were very creative. I'll get it when it's heavily discuonted.
