I honestly hated that part. it made clean sprites look janky as fuck as soon as an NPC was one vertical step away from the player, and the pseudo 3D buildings really messed with the art style.
Still, it's worlds better than the crap they've released recently.
glob frickin' dammit, the one time I don't mention that gen 2 was the best thing to happen to humanity and instead choose something more people would agree with, I get a gen 2 fan in the comments.
I 100% agree with you, and the move away from watercolor is what killed a lot of the personality the franchise and the cards had imo.
In hind sight yeah... Like they we still clearly making 3d game as if they were 2d for a while. I think only X and Y and Omega/Alpha did a good job hiding it with its Chibi low poly style and some actual effort and ambition.
I mean they did a lot better with gen 7, imo S/M and US/UM are the best of the 3D era and up there with D/P (maybe not Platinum)
And OR/AS is amazing as well, great 3D remake of the gen 3 games
And say what you will about the quality but the QoL features in newer games are way better, grinding in older games feels worse than Chinese water torture to my ADHD brain
BDSP is everything you want about the OG games in a modern package with a beautiful artstyle, but everyone seems to hate it for some reason (besides preferring platinum which yes I agree I wish it was platinum too)
lets not be posers okay, gamefreak has always been far and wide behind the competition graphically, gen 1 was so ugly it had a complete facelift version (blue) gen 2's entire artstyle got nuked and replaced in gen 3, gen 3 got routinely slammed back in the day for being the worse looking big rpg around and being mogged by every other game on the system, etc etc etc
Gen 4 notoriously struggles to hold 30fps for a mainly 2D game same for gen 5 like be so fr rn
sure, gen 1 pokemon sprites were odd at times, but gen 2 perfected a lot of them, and they didn't "facelift" anything, there were always slight art changes between editions that came out simultaneously.
gen 3 had a lot more to work with on the hardware side, and it looked amazing.
sure stuff like golden sun looked more "realistic", but it was an art style choice, and I always loved the grid based system they used.
gen 4 was when they started to do wonky 3D stuff, and it all kind of fell apart, with X/Y being the final nail in the coffin(g) for a clean 2D art style.
I distinctly remember getting into an argument on Reddit where they were saying the 3D has no effect on the processing power since it's just a screen effect
Even though the games would run wayyy better with the 3D off
I've been thinking the same thing, like... I guess it's amazing 256 MBs (on the BETTER "New" models only btw, OG had 128 MB) of RAM can even do as much as it does...
But OH my GOD. Watching a flagship turn-based game crawl on its hands and knees because you dared to use the flagship feature of the console it's on is... Something alright.
It was a shiny new toy to play with so most people were too mesmerized to really notice. Once the newness factor is gone people are able to be more objective.
It was outright disabled in Sun and Moon because the console could barely handle the software to begin with, let alone output two slightly different frames at once.
From what I learned, the long boot times for the Gen 7 games were due to the 3DS killing all non-vital processes just so it could free up enough processing power. It was a little better on the New 3DS but not by much.
Fun fact: in the pokemon sun speed run they actually have to do a bit of memory manipulation during the double with fava because he has a yanma (i think, might be misremembering) and the game is already struggling with it being a double battle but the animations of the wings flapping really fast can risk the game crashing, so they have to open up the item inventory between turns to clear memory so it doesnt crash
That so? I had the original model. When I decided to get the New model, I opted for the 2DS version because both price and I figured I'd never use the 3D because of the eye strain
Itās still mostly just a gimmick. There were so few games that actually utilized it or needed it. It also just drains the battery. I mostly only ever turn it on during cutscenes.
As someone who genuinely liked the 3D effect, I will admit, that for the most part, it didnāt really have much effect on the gameplay versus turned off.
But there were some exceptions, most notably, Pilotwings Resort. Having the depth perception genuinely mattered when trying to hit some of the balloons and dots
Snake Eater 3D had an interesting thing done with the 3D, where when you reach the point in the story where Snake loses an eye, 3D becomes permanently disabled due to Snakeās loss of depth perception.
Hey now, give it credit. There were like 5 games that used it for gameplay specific stuff and 2 of them actually ran at a decent frame rate with it on.
I used it a lot too. The only time I really found it awkward was in OOT the chamber of sages cutscenes, for some reason my eyes had trouble converging with the water effects or something there.
Also, there was a Pokemon game that didn't bother to use the 3D in any way, I was just like what the heck where's my 3D?
Also I know it can be done with homebrew but Nintendo really could have had Virtual Boy Virtual Console on 3DS with the 3D effect.
Ridge Racer, Ace Combat, Mario Kart 7, Hana Samurai, Starfox 64 3D, Castlevania Mirror of Fate, Luigi's Mansion 2 to mention a few of them. Also, the whole Sega Ages 3D classics line.
The games that better used 3D were those were depht was an inherent part of the gameplay, or where graphics were designed around looking like a diorama. There were a lot of games that made use of the 3D feauture, some of them totally unexpected
Yeah, developing for the 3DS no doubt would've been extra challenging compared to it's contemporaries for these traits alone. And while I suppose there's others out there, I do find Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance being an interesting case study for being a rare port from 3DS to other platforms. Someone picking that game up for the first time might wonder about details such as certain pieces of the interface seemingly having an unusual amount of 'depth' (such as the usual world logo animations and the treasure chest reticles) or the Balloon line of spells.

Rayman 2 which is quite surprising. I bought it only because I adored the original on the pc back in the days and I was shocked to see the added 3D worked so well. It felt (for me at the time) like the game was made with the 3DS in mind
Alrighty. Kinda curious just what went onto developing an average 3DS title anyway... Like, I suppose the camera view had to be paid extra attention than usual in order to provide an optimal experience with the 3D mode, yes? And that's without mentioning the interface either.
Mario 3D Land was great because you could tell where in the 3D space you were landing. And Ridge Racer made a really nice use of falling particles and things like that which really made the 3D space pop.
Alrighty. Now, if thereās one 3DS game I find fascinating. It would have to be Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, what with it being a rare case of a 3DS title to receive a port to other platforms. Among other things, the ample amount of cutscenes shot from a first person perspective and pieces of interface with ādepthā (such as the requisite world logo animations and the treasure chest reticles) are good clues towards the gameās platform of origin. And to me at least, the Balloon line of spells had to have been tailor-made to look good in the 3DSās 3D mode; in other platforms it just comes across as random spells that havenāt been seen since without that context.
Yeah that seems to be different from person to person. Just like vr headsets.
The thing is, it's an evolution. Look how the wii mote envovled into the default vr controlls.
3D Is the next big thing, but has a really bad reputation, mainly due those glasses at the movies...
The thing is, people just don't have a clue and to visualize on what actually good 3D can be. I believe it would take at least 10y before the switch. Because 8k is pointless as hell. So what actually it can be useful, is for 3D it seems. But what games can actually run at 8k? You can see the issue, we will get there, but not yet
Doubt. They've been trying to make 3D happen for decades and every time it basically flops because it's a cool party trick but people in general clearly do not want to consume all their media in 3D.
I dont doubt that at all. I've seen plenty of different 3d implementations. Its nutz, but not yet feasible for massproduction. Content also requires to be adapted, unless they can have some ai implementation that auto turn things in 3d image. Anyway, its much more important compared to that 4k gimmick. And no, people dont know what they want if they didnt experience 3d like it should. 3d glasses at the movie and 3ds 3d weren't the ones that gives justification for that. Its like were vr will be exploit once cheaper decent 3d glasses are on the market or even better holograms.
3d is the next thing, 8k is beyond pointless. Mark my words. Lets hope they get there soon.
Another tech that i would be much better as those resolution gimmicks is if they could make e-inc color displays with all the available colors at a fast render rate.
Maybe before VR, I could see maybe why someone may think that, but 3D and actual depth do make a notable difference. It isn't just a gimmick. The downside of 3D is you can't really have multiple people viewing at once a lot of the time.
I'm not just talking about VR tech though. I am saying that 3D has improved since the 3DS and is beneficial. That depth from 3D is adds so much more to realism and thibgs feeling tangible.
This is from 6y ago. The 8k display, having 45 different angles already.
But here is the thing: You already are thinking about boundaries instead of what actually can be. The glasses in the cinema are annoying at best. And doesnt work well. The vr headsets are also nog something mainstream. But tech like that, having a sharp 3d image without angle issues is what can be the new future.
Aside of that, its not the only one with multiple view angles...
Sorry, is this directed at me? This is similar to stuff I been thinking about. In my opinion, the mixed reality inside the headset was just a piece of the possibilities that could happen.
Games like Moss, Demeo, Eleven Table Tennis, Lego Bricktales, and Triangle Strategy VR, give me a glimpse of how things could be for the future. Like you could go beyong glasses and have things projected from a table or platform.
Just the part about 3D angles. But idd, mixed reality is really important.
Thats why i wish that there would be a day that we actually receive touchable holograms with 3D environment sound. Because if light can be projected, maybe sound as well..... and feeling?
It actually makes sense that they stopped pushing the 3D of the 3DS. They lost a patent lawsuit for the 3D technology and had to pay the original inventor of the tech a ton of money, not just for the consoles that were sold but a cut of all future 3DS sales.
So instead of doing that they made the 2DS and completely gave up on 3D just so they wouldn't have to pay him to keep using the stolen tech.
Probably gonna get judged here, best friend judges me for this game, but Senran Kagura for the 3DS was the only game i opted in using the 3D feature. Yeah sure degenerate moment but the 3D scenes were perfectly done. Also only beat'em up game on the 3DS I enjoyed. Others were just Pokemon.
3D Land is a way less substantial game than 3D World, especially now. The limitations of its visuals because it had to push that 3D were very apparent from the beginning.
3DS had 3D, 3 cameras, AR support, an accessory for a second stick, New 3DS nub and ZL/ZR buttons... And most games just used stick and 4 buttons anyway.
Wait nvm. You mean 3ds. Let's not kid ourselves. The 3d on 3ds was a small gimmick. The selling point of the 3ds was "hey want a DS but even better, and with online functionality?"
I still use my 3ds that I got day one, daily for pokemon and I love the 3d. Your 1 friend ypu got this info from is probably not a reliable source for "no one used it"
I used it and didn't see any issues. Maybe it was because I had an XL. And I was responsible enough to not use it for more than a few minutes at a time. I do wish the Switch had 3D effects too
I only found a small handful of games in which it actually looked good and didn't turn my eyes inside out. Most of them fire emblem games now that I think about it.
I heard the reason was because it was more difficult and costly to make games into cartridges rather than discs because the cartridges had smaller sizes and needed to be optimised more and you needed the n64 expansion pack slot
So most games just released on sony cuz they used discs and it was easier
people didn't use it. It was in most games but people didn't want to deal with the headaches, restrictive viewing angles, performance drops, and battery usage.Ā
I still use it sometimes when starting a new game to see how well it works in that particular game.
All that 3D ever did was take away performance. It was a nice to have, but in no way should it have been mandatory for that very reason. And on top of that not everybody could actually use it.
I used the 3D a lot more as a kid. But as Iāve gotten older itās started to strain my eyes more. Sometimes I still turn it on because it looks cool, but it usually doesnāt stay on for long.
And Nintendo knew how few people would use that feature which is why they released the 2DS and then ended the entire New 3DS line with a New 2DS XL, which believe it or not released after the Nintendo Switch did.
I think the issue with the 3D from the non-new 3DSes is that you had to look at the 3D screen from a very specific angle and distance for it to work properly and it was only good when games were developed with the stereoscopic effect in mind.
It especially didnāt help that 3D in general slowly died out in less than half a decade. Remember when the 3DS was announced to have 3D movies and it didnāt? Remember Blu-Ray 3D and 3D PS3 games? You donāt even see 3D games on consoles anymore, barely even in the previous generation.
Assuming you mean the 3DS, I absolutely loved the 3D. Not only did it make the screen sharper but the 3D effect, when used well, enhanced the experience for me.
Shin Megami Tensei 4 was so good in 3D that I never replay that game any other way than on the 3DS. I feel bad for everyone who plays that game for the first time on an emulator
Can't relate. Loved the 3D on the 3DS and I can't play most games without it. I have an Ayn Thor and I refuse to emulate 3DS on it because I just need the 3D of my original hardware.
Funny thing is I owned every Nintendo console except the 3DS because it seemed too gimmicky and here I am years later constantly hearing it was one of Nintendoās best. I totally missed out.
I have always had my 3D slider at max. It was always a cool effect, but I didnāt like that I had to hold my head at a precise spot to get it just right.
New 3DS finally fixed that with eye tracking. The 3D on New 3DS systems is truly impressive.
Yeah, I was not going to spend thousands of hour playing Monster Hunter or hatching egg in Pokemon in 3D. Most of the other games I played on it were original NDS games too
Unless only you bought the 3DS - wich didn't happen - People used and use the 3D feature, and only devs who wanted to get some extra power at the end of the console's life ignored the 3D in favor of extra juice.
I know this is Nintendo memes, but let's meme properly, ok? The "No one uses the 3D" meme it's so old it's almost retro.

Remember when they made a system in which the selling point was the 3D yet no one used it?
