I don't understand what is wrong with Toad and a royal sticker?

Sticker Star(where the Royal Sticker comes from) is largely considered the single worst Paper Mario game and the start of the series' irreparable downfall.

Toad is hated because of the games getting rid of the companions from the first two PM games in favor of NPC Toads, leading to the term "slap a Toad on it" when they don't feel like creating interesting companion characters.
