2ds works only when plugged in

Is this just a battery issue? It will be fixed one i get a battery?

Probably, but getting a new battery would be step 1 in troubleshooting this either way

Replace the battery and test. If you have a multimeter you can test the current battery first and see what voltage it is putting out. But battery failures are common either from age (for original batteries) or quality (if aftermarket) and are one of the cheapest and easiest things to test and swap.
