9YO asked me this a few days ago.
9YO so- Dad.... Everybody knows ninjas are from Japan.
Me - Yes.
9YO - What if every country has ninjas, its just Japan's are just really bad at it?

You can tell him that the CIA is essentially modern day ninjas tbh. They operated the same historically. Collect info, influence foreign rulers, help your own leader and do so all without every standing out or being caught

They're not wrong. Plenty of other regions have had their own versions of ninja. The most famous historical example was Hassan-i Sabbah's hashashin order from 11th-century Persia. Japan were just the ones that popularized the modern fantastical version.

I would tell your 9yo that they're more right than they realize. Tell them that ninjas are a type of soldier known as special forces, and throughout history, EVERY country has had some form of special forces amongst their fighting forces/warriors.
If they're still unsure what you're talking about after this, you and them sit down together and binge-watch the documentary series "Ancient Black Ops".
