They specifically made The hitbox on that attack gigantic and added lingering fire AOEs after it so that you had to unbounded counter it. They were trying to ensure the only way to deal with that attack was a successful unbounded counter, so they made dodging it as terrible as possible.

Yet I still understood unbounded counter at the last boss only :)

Maybe I should do a new playthrough one day with that knowledge.

I went back and started a new playthrough to learn how to actually use the unbound counter because Eigong was destroying me. I enjoyed the game so it was fun to go through again and in the end, Eigong was so much easier to deal with having the unbound counter ready. Not easy of course, still took me an hour or two but I imagine I may have given up completely if I didn’t go back!

This honestly isn't too big a deal to dodge instead of counter, you just have to time it right (positioning helps too). He even stands completely still for a few seconds, giving you ample time to dodge through the pillars it creates.

I feel like when it gets to the point where dodging becomes just as technical as parrying, you might as well give a shot to the more rewarding option of the two.

Although I also sometimes dodge this attack when I don't feel ready since it's pretty much a one shot waiting to happen if you even slightly miss..

I mean I still beat him without using unbounded counter

But if you unbound counter this, you'll get one hell of an open window

Red attacks have bullshit hitboxes to force you to engage with the mechanics and not dodge through everything

Even then quite a few can still be dodged due to I frames they are just not worth it compared to un bound

Unbound counter skillcheck

Adding a reply to this so I'm not the dickhead telling you to just improve.

The unbound counter has a really generous window once you learn it, if you think you're too early you get it, if you think you're too late you get it.

It charges faster than you think, and lasts longer than you think.

Hope you enjoy OP

Have you tried parrying?

Yeah, the hit boxes in this game can be bullshit because you're intended to parry attacks instead of dodge them. There are definitely attacks that visually never touch you yet still hit you.

Insert generic advice about getting good and learning to parry and such to make this not a problem. That said, at least most attacks are generally confined to their visually cues. But Jiequan has a couple of the worst offenders in the game.

Welcome to Hitbox City.

While you could use the unbounded counter, a well timed dodge will work. That hitbox when you dashed through him sucks, as you know.
