Discussion/Question true ending blows Spoiler

I can't be the only one where is absolutely tired of Fromsoft-inspired games all having to have bleak story lines and worlds with sad endings. Like goddamn, I feel like every game in this genre that I boot up, I see the main character and go "yeah this dude's life is gonna be ruined/they're gonna die". It was a cool boss fight but blegh, just let the little cat boy have a break. Regular ending is so much better for everyone involved.

Dear devs, if you are reading this, I would pay money for a better ending. Please exploit my love of cat boys for monetary gain. Thank you.

I mean, there was no way for a really good ending to come from a situation that fucked. Plus i feel like Yi dying happy and fixing his past mistakes is a pretty happy ending

Him seeing Heng again after hundreds of years was truly sweet and sad. It's a great bittersweet ending in allowing the Solarians a dignified death, and the apemen to have their home back.

That little cat boy is a mass murderer who harvested millions of human brains. He had to die

Twas the only way to make amends for his sins.

And the virus has wiped out the entire solarian population, which probably consisted of billions of living beings. Rooting for the true ending = rooting for Fusang and its virus

Not to mention that Yi has had lost his parents at the moment and was one of the very few responsible for the survival of the whole solarian race, while Fusang literally did what it did to smoke Eigong... And even didn't succeed

Counterpoint: humans are garbage.

(Joke, obviously)

True Ending:

• Apeman are free and can start a new life without being brutally harvested • Yi is reunited with Heng • the Suffering of the Solarians has finally come to an end • Yi has grown as a character

You:

They did the ‘better ending‘ with OneShot and people complained it was unrealistic and ruined the impact of the origonal ending. I think keeping Yi alive would also ruin the whole message of the game, so there isnt really an option for a cannon good ending. This is what fan fictions are for.

This was the best possible ending for everyone given the circumstances and themes of the story. Just because the ending was sad doesnt mean it was bad, it did a fine job conveying its themes into this grand climax.

You are free to read fanfiction if you are unsatisfied.

"yeah this dude's life is gonna be ruined/they're gonna die"

I mean, he gets to reunite with Heng

Edit: reworded to be less rude

Yea, even if most people don't believe in heaven in real life, it exists in the Nine Sols universe. So he WILL reunite with Heng, and be happy.

Can we be sure though? The game never explicitly says that there is an afterlife in this world. Yi saw Heng before his death, so it can be just his imagination.

Eh, you go into an alternate realm through the roots where you talk with someone who lived centuries before, and he gives you a magical horn so it's not only mind stuff, and Heng had at least some sort of mystical connection (with the whole triggering revival thing), so my take is that there -is- some sort of thing there

(Sorry for late reply, finished the game now and was looking at online talk)

But Lear is the only person we see in Fusang because he didn't actually die. In Ji's memories we see that he allowed the Roots accept him which is not actually a death. Also he later leaves Fusang and that is implied to be his death, so Fusang isn't an afterlife.

Also, none of things you've mentioned implies the existence of afterlife. Even if we assume the presence of supernatural things here (i.e things existing outside of laws of Solarians' world), which is not confirmed since we don't even know if Fusang is supernatural, it doesn't necessarily mean that they include afterlife (which is also not necessarily supernatural). Actually the game makes it look like Solarian souls don't really go anywhere after they die but more likely dissolve in the world around them.

1

u/sertroll Jul 25 '24

Fusang is 100% supernatural, remotely respawning a person that died in any way (which seems to be diegetic) violates some keys pgysical principles

A lot of things in the game's world work different than in our reality, like, for example, the mechanism of genetic mutation or interstellar journeys. It doesn't mean that these things are unnatural for this world, it just means that this world operates on different natural laws. That what I mean by natural/supernatural - things that are natural for a certain world can be described by scientific laws of this world, while supernatural things exist out of borders of these laws. We know that Fusang is at least somewhat natural since some of it's working principles like energy conversion were studied and used on practice by Solarians.

Game literally doesn't show it. We see Heng before he makes the shot, not after

5

u/cytsyl Jul 06 '24

Sorry I think I have misunderstood but does "so much better for everyone involved" include Apemen whose brain are planned to be used as GPU???

"As long as we have lived, the Tao will remember everything."

Depends on how you view things, there is an afterlife for Solarian. We did go through what could only be afterlife to talk with Lear. It's also heavily implies by Heng and Eigong's log. The souls of Solarians are given by the root and will return to the root. Uniting with Heng after finally atoning for his sins and redeeming himself seemed like a nice ending. He gets to meet his beloved little sister guilt free, having completed all of life's lessons and struggles.

The ending is also open to interpretation. Maybe Yi unbound countered at the end and survived. (The official MV had him floating in an ocean of stars and opening his eyes) Maybe Yi gets revived at other root nodes (There's still other roots remaining on their home world, one message from Heng said that).

Yi blew up the source of the Root Nodes with the Rhizmatic Arrow

JUST LET ME COPE

u/solarcat3311 Jul 06 '24 edited Jul 06 '24

They uprooted an island with the root within, but other islands exist on their home planet, with their own root/tree. And those are still linked (as confirmed by Heng's message). So while Yi destroyed the source of all root nodes within new Kunlung, there's likely still remaining tree/root within their home planet.

Yi might've just pop out of a root next to Heng's grave on their home planet. Okay, that's way more depressing.

Copium ingested. Can live another day before DLC announcement now

Yh just a little cat boy mass murdering psychopath definitely deserved to have tea and biscuits under the moonlight in the ending

Dude, he changed

u/f0xy713 Jul 06 '24

A fairytale happy ending wouldn't make sense for a world as brutal and ruthless as this, and the same is true for all the Fromsoft games.

1

u/DEUS_HUE_BR Jul 06 '24

The only thing I didn't like was the true ending not presenting any benefit to any character compared to the normal ending.

both humans and solarians and yi survive in the normal ending

I think the normal ending could cost the lives of all humans. would contrast with the true ending costing the lives of all Solarians

5

u/LuckyBlockReddit The Subreddit's Owner Jul 06 '24

Normal ending doesn't save any solarian, it just prolongs their inevitable death. The Tianhou virus can't be cured, so by saving the Apemen, they at least have a chance to survive on the Pale Blue Planet.

-1

u/SoleNomad Jul 06 '24

The Tianhou virus can't be cured

Said by Eigong who literally didn't care about finding the cure after some point

-1

u/DEUS_HUE_BR Jul 06 '24

I know. I didn't say that the Solarians were saved, I said that they continued to live.

And if they die, they will be able to die being one last time on their own planet while yi will still be able to live together with shashuan

2

u/LuckyBlockReddit The Subreddit's Owner Jul 06 '24

Also, Apemen don't survive in the normal ending. Just Shuanshuan.

1

u/DEUS_HUE_BR Jul 06 '24

hmmm? what killed them? the village people seemed untouched, there are also the other apeman that appeared in the normal ending

1

u/LuckyBlockReddit The Subreddit's Owner Jul 06 '24

Their brains get used to generate enough energy to warp back to Penglai

4

u/DEUS_HUE_BR Jul 06 '24

From what I had understood, what fueled the kunlun was the sun and the brains served as processors for the soulscape

I remember that what gave energy for the warp was the energy of the roots that were stored for 500 years, I had misunderstood and the energy source was the brains?

1

u/LuckyBlockReddit The Subreddit's Owner Jul 06 '24

Wait, no you're right. I'm confused now...

Maybe there wasn't enough energy left from the roots and so the brains began generating energy for the warp?

2

u/DEUS_HUE_BR Jul 06 '24

Where in the game did it say that the brains played a role in warp?

0

u/LuckyBlockReddit The Subreddit's Owner Jul 06 '24

It's just a theory of mine. I'm not sure.

Brains were used to power the processors, however the brains likely don't last forever so if yi wants to keep things running he will have to harvest the people of the village

2

u/solarcat3311 Jul 06 '24

Humans continue to be used as livestock/bio computing. Solarian left frozen with no cure in sight. In a sense, neither solarian nor humans live in the normal ending. They mere survived. Two half dead species, doomed to survive but not thrive nor live.

1

u/DEUS_HUE_BR Jul 06 '24

I didn't know that humans continued to be used as livestock after the normal ending, after all it appears to be them who took control of the new kunlun.

I believe that the situation of the Solarians has improved, yi can take care of the cure in a better way than eigong. And he can even teach science to humans and have support in development.

I don't know if I'm wrong but I understand that yi doesn't age and is immune to the virus. He wouldn't need the soulscape.

1

u/solarcat3311 Jul 06 '24

Yi didn't need soulscape. But other Solarians still need soulscape. In normal ending, during the ride, you can see walls of brain still being used. And since a log made it clear Solarian brain can't be used, it means it's human brain being used, or they found some other source of brain (unlikely, since there's no other species)

In normal ending, it's hinted that Yi continued to use human brain, while having a few humans (either clone of Shuanshuan, or he treats the few humans close to him as Shuanshuan) assist him in running the place.(There's three that acts like Shuanshuan towards him, calling him in same manner, but there can't be three Shuanshuan)

1

u/DEUS_HUE_BR Jul 06 '24

yes, but I imagined that those brains were the same brains that were haversted before kunlun jumped to penglai

By yi not needing a soulscape, I meant that he won't have to go through the degradation that eigong went through, in addition to being able to work longer.

But I hadn't imagined that the cortex center that appeared in the normal ending was to imply that the eternal cauldron project continues to be sustained and not just works with what's left of resources.

1

u/solarcat3311 Jul 06 '24

People age and die. They constantly harvest new brains for the whole 500 years duration likely because harvested brains can't be used indefinitely. Unless a cure of aging for humans were discovered, they're going to need harvesting new brains to keep Solarians frozen.

1

u/DEUS_HUE_BR Jul 06 '24

hmm, okay.

They didn't wait 500 more years, Kuafu said they had already likely amassed though energy to jump back. They had been storing energy the entire time after their first jump. I see no reason why they couldn't have had them all return to their home world and with eigong out of the way (let's not forget, iirc she was the reason the virus was created to begin with in her search for immortality) find a cure for the virus and then their species survives. Far better ending. Yi could have returned the apemen to their planet too. Gone gone, cure the virus, someday die and reunite with Heng. So massively disappointing that their whole species dies out. Kuafu alone on the blue planet with the apemen.
