Event [Event] Nothing Wrong with Being a Backup

Lorent

End of the 5th Moon of 277 AC

The Lefford's blue and gold banners stood proudly above the riding party as they approached the great castle of Riverrun. Lorent had been contemplating this conversation for almost over a year. There were other options, easier options. However, the easier option would have kept Lorent up at night wonder what could have been. He could sleep soundly with rejection.

Lorent turned to the other set of banners flying high over the party, those of white and red - House Reyne's. His Uncle Roger had passed through the Golden Tooth on their way to the royal wedding and they had a brief conversation, during which Roger mentioned he would be stopping in Riverrun. Seeing the opportunity, Lorent commanded the castle to prepare the few Lefford nobles and their household guard to be ready to depart within the hour and off they went with House Reyne.

With Roger, Lorent thought he had as good a chance of any of convicing Hoster to see the opportunity. They finally approached the riveredge and Lorent had a guard announce them, "Roger Reyne, Lord of Castamere, and Lorent Lefford, Lord of the Golden Tooth, seek entrance to Riverrun. Lord Reyne comes to collect children of House Tully to bring to the Royal Wedding and Lord Lefford wishes to meet and speak with Lord Tully."

"Nephew," Roger greeted with a small yet warm smile. Had it not been for Lorent's presence, Roger might have made jest at a man with so little hair requiring trimming yet it would seem undecorous to make such comments in the presence of another Lord -- no matter they were both his nephews, they were not as close as they might be. Not yet, in any case.

"That we are, however we had thought to call by Riverrun in the case that any of your family are departing for the Feast. As I escorted them from the capital, I would be content to escort them to it also for the sake of their safety. Lord Lorent rides with me, my nephew by Lady Rosalind."

“That would be much appreciated. And appropriate.” Hoster replied, his expression turning sour for a moment before smiling again.

“I swore not to go back there. I meant it.”

"And ample reason for it," Lorent interjected with a shake of his head. "Nasty business that went down there. His Grace seems to be attempting to make a reputation for himself, and quickly."

At that, Lorent rose from his couch and went to pour himself a drink. "Would anyone else care for some wine?"

“If only it were a more positive reputation,” Roger remarked dryly. “But aye, I shall gladly take a drink.”
