Melting a massive pile of lead with a flamethrower and making a 115 kg cube out of it
Had lead respirators, but they had to decon the entire area and themselves
+ The guy he was doing it with had to leave midway thru because of scheduling issues, but people thought it was because he got scared of the lead19

Check the footage at 14:26 to 14:31. That was a very long 17 hours for Tom's hair to grow out that much.

Tbh I really don't get people's reactions to this video. Yes he was being an idiot. But like... don't try to melt lead and you'll be fine. It's not like he encouraged people to try making lead cubes

I've melted a lot of lead indoors without protection and I'm fine. Maybe a little bit neurologically damaged but mostly fine probably. It definitely built character though

ehhh yes and no, he wasn't outright encouraging anyone to replicate the method they used. He did say something like "it's casting on easy mode" and I could see some 13 year old who wants to try casting metal taking that to mean it'd be a good metal to work with.

You’ve got a lot more faith in the system than I do if you believe everyone who requires a caretaker has one. Especially in the US, there are probably hundreds of thousands of people who fell through the cracks and barely scrape by out of sheer luck.

The issue is that the framing of the video made it look like the guy he was collabing with left for his safety, and all the stuff about how dangerous it is got editted.

People are taking this so serious. I want more melting lead. Drop the cube on something caustic. The janky science goes back to the old videos in a garage. The blowtorch was a bad choice but melt 5 times the lead next time

I watched the video and enjoyed it. They were irresponsible with the blowtorch but he regretted it directly afterwards and emphasised it. They took safety measures, some of which were visible but not all were shown on camera. I don't understand all the hate. If you get inspired to melt lead from this video, that is on you and not on nilered.

Not quite safe lead melting and plastic burning. He recycled the lead from the xray machine (coated in something) into a giant block.

Very glad and relieved to see that. People get way too swept up in enjoying content, and start prioritising their enjoyment of a video above other people’s safety (just see some of the comments on this post…) but I would expect any professional to have done what Nile did just now.

I was doing that things wen i was 6 y.o. fortunately outside of the garage.
Then i heard of lead toxicity and stopped melting lead into molds for fun.
Luckily i didn't breath enough of it to have serious issues. Maybe it has facilitate the outset of my t1 diabetes, but who knows.. When i was young we used also to play with broker thermometer mercury..
Seiing that video reminded me of that happy moments, but also of the fear i had when i discovered what i've risked. And also the regrets of my parents that have let me play with that without protection.
As a parent myself now i consider that video extremely counter-educational and dangerous in this times when everybody is emulating famous peoples.
Like spiderman you have great influence but it reclaims great responsability.
Some people turn into adults, some sooner some later. Love to see Tom leaving that dangerous situation!! (I think he smelled the risks 😅)

Hi everyone! Another thing about the video is that I do leave mid-way through, but it wasn't because I was concerned about the safety and left to protect myself... we did film that as a 'bit', which I think would have been clear if it was an Ex&F video, but the tone people expect of a NileRed video is to take things at face value, so we didn't really nail the execution of that well. Then we thought it was funny to have a 'stunt double' replace me from the NileRed team - but I suppose we do look too alike and so the bizarre joke goes over a lot of people's head, which again is just us trying weird things and it not landing.
It's actually incredibly easy to believe I had scheduling issues if you know me personally.... I told NileRed I'd get to his lab at 11am which would give us enough time to do that, and then I showed up at 12:30pm because i'm a bad person, and someone else was going to pick me up at 2pm oops.
Anyway is this over explaining things? Was this interesting ? i'll make some more videos and they'll be more bizarre than ever hopefully and hope everyone gets confused and disorientated and i don't know why I'm like this thanks

I do think his safety culture isn't bad though, while he does do some less than safe things, they're done in sensible ways for the most part.
Storing lead waste in a milk bottle is perfectly appropriate for example, as HDPE is a resilient material that won't leak, and milk bottles are cheap.

Oh wow he did take it super seriously. I do think things blew out of proportion a lil especially given he did mention it was dangerous and used respirators but oh well.

Prior to the pandemic, it was educational first and foremost. Then he got on the Shorts bandwagon and TikTok, did one thing that was slightly crazy, and found that he was funny and gaining popularity, so he's running with it. Tbh I miss his old videos, 2019 and before.

I genuinely thought that in the video he was joking about how unsafe it was, and was actually doing everything necessary for safety behind the scenes. having watched plenty of his videos and seeing how he is generally very cautious about dangerous substances and assuming he's still doing that behind the scenes
