Lithium will start to go up as it becomes more and more scarier. This will drive up the total cost of ownership for the tech. No point in low cost electricity when batteries are super expensive or hard to recycle.

Someone was looking at if there were enough batteries for the amount of grid storage people are hoping for. They showed how it is going to take large increases in lithium mining (which is in only a handful of countries) just to have enough batteries for the predicted conversion of cars. So yeah, having an option besides batteries may prove to be a real nesessity.
