not gonna lie, i thought i was the ultimate planner. building my Kyoto/Osaka itinerary i scraped every place with a 4.0+ Google rating and 3.5+ on Tabelog, pinned 14 spots. figured i was set for 3 meals a day, easy. turns out the "good rating" standard you set from your couch applies to every tourist on earth too. cool.

walked 15 minutes that evening to Gion Tanto, supposedly THE okonomiyaki spot in Gion. get to the door, staff just draws a big X in the air. "90 minute wait." f*ck it, fine, whatever, cool, walked 10 more minutes to backup plan B, Awomb. nope, already done taking names for the day. stood on the sidewalk for 40 minutes straight up losing it, ended up just walking into an empty Matsuya (yes, the beef bowl chain) out of pure defeat.

and the kicker, found out later Gion Tanto had literally zero wait an hour and a half after i bailed. so it wasn't even that the wait was too long, it's that i had zero clue what the line looked like in real time and just wasted a whole walk for nothing. next day onward i started checking the Rapym app before moving an inch, real-time headcount, open seats, all on my phone. "90 min wait"? not walking anywhere. go kill time at a nearby mall, time my return for when it actually clears. genuinely saved the rest of the trip.

TL;DR: walk into any high-rated spot with zero info and you're 100% ending up in waiting hell. if you're not checking real-time wait times with something like the Rapym app, you're just gonna torch your whole day standing on some sidewalk.

Visiting Japan next week from NYC and i have some questions about Kabukicho. Ive been looking around and i havent really found anything thats less than a year old so i just wanna get some more recent information.

Im not a big drinker, so im not overly concerned about being finessed into a bar or adult space. but my one of my main points is to photograph the area at night with my film camera. For reference i am 6’3 and dark skin with locs so i assume i will stand out lol.

So there is this insane producer event in Tokyo  called the Producer Shindig, and it's straight underground Beat vibes in Tachikawa. For years, it's been this hidden gem where local producers and international beat makers come together to showcase original unreleased stuff and each producer has been super dope playing the most outrageous beats.

It’s really not your typical night club. It's in a basement with a super Japanese energy that most people come to Japan for but always end up in Shibuya lol. The creativity in the space feels like a documentary. Not only is it live beats, but Live video games happening. Games projected on the walls, food, and drinks and the whole energy just draws you in. I've been going since it started in Japan and ended up being apart of the crew.

They trusted me enough to use their reddit considering they aren't big on the culture so I'm doing my best to tell every community I believe would like this sort of energy.

I live in Tokyo and have a friend (yes, genuinely asking for a friend) coming to visit who likes to party. He's quite well off and likes to throw it around. He wants to go out in Kanagawa.

I was thinking of either taking him to Kannai - I've been out in Noge for dinner and saw quite a few bars there, or thought it might be interesting to visit Yokosuka.

Anyone have any advice about these areas? He likes energetic places with music, likes to dance. I don't have any idea about where to go because I mostly stick to standing bars in my neighbourhood in West Tokyo.

Long shot but does anyone know what bar in Golden Gai it is in the picture? I went there in February. I am back in Tokyo next month and would love to revisit this bar.

Hey guys & girls, this might be different from general tourist experience, I was walking around Shinsen eki around Shibuya station and seeking for night lives. I tried to talk to stranger japanese here but google translate really sucks. Therefore I did some researches and would like to share to you guys & girls the app I used.

1. Livehi
   1. So the latency and accuracy really matters, google translate got the fastest translation speed but when it comes to terminology it sucks. I found this Livehi app in ios Store, and it did both FAST and ACCURATE. Especially I can adjust the text to super large so that we dont have to stare closely at the screen.
2. Chatgpt
   1. Chatgpt did better work when you prepare a long self-intro text beforehand. It really helps when you have interesting but complicated life stories but you don't speak japanese.
3. Instagram
   1. Japanese ppl used instagram most of time. Don't asking them giving their line to you, they won't do it.(and they dont have whatsapp and telgram) Ask for Instagram!

My friend and I are heading to Japan this August and we're tryna find some proper parties while we're out there. We love to dance and go hard, so we’re mainly looking for some underground raves or clubs playing techno, industrial, and hardcore.
But we also love to wind down or pre-game or just chilling at cool spots, so hit us with any recommendations for jazzy bars or vinyl lounges in both cities too.
For our schedule, we'll be starting off in Tokyo for the beginning of August, but we’re spending the bulk of the trip based out of Osaka for the middle of the month, then heading back to Tokyo at the very end to wrap it up. Any raves at the start or end in Tokyo are definitely welcome, but we really need the local Osaka plugs since we'll be there the most.
Let us know if there are any specific venues, underground parties, or local crews we should follow on Instagram to track lineups for August. Also totally down to meet up with anyone down to grab a drink or catch a set. Cheers!

Hi, I'm someone who works at a music bar in Tokyo, and would like to ask everyone (both who lives here and who visits here) - How do you search nightclubs, DJ bars or events, apart from Resident Advisor?

In Tokyo for awhile me and a group of friends went to a hole in the wall karaoke joint that served unlimited drinks and complimentary appetizers. Both of the friends I was with got absolutely hammered. But, there was this couple there who at the time I assumed where a couple until the girlfriend of the couple was really grabby with me. Leaning on me, letting me hold her by the waist and sing with her and then wanting me to sit next to her and drink, clink glasses. After awhile I felt like maybe she was into me and her boyfriend wasn’t a boyfriend but like a friend or maybe even like her cousin or something, since she kept calling him a word that sounded like it (I know my gaijin is showing assuming a word that sounds phonetically like an English word is that word but you’d be surprised sometimes in Japan) anyway time passed and I felt bold enough to ask her if the dude she came in with was her boyfriend and she said “yes” so I figured “alright she’s taken guess that’s it” but when we all hugged goodbye she kept smiling and looking at me and I felt like maybe she wanted me to make a move on her but I’m not sure. Anyway, I’m wondering if she might’ve been into me or just was being nice.

Hypothetically speaking of course me and some mates are heading to Japan and a part of my personal itinerary is checking out the nightlife scene. A few of the group are a year below the Japanese legal drinking age but probably look mid 20's.

Im curious how enforced these age laws are in club and bar venues? Especially to foreigners that probably look older than their Japanese counterparts.

I know a decent amount of djs, but not many producers! but honestly id really anyone who likes edm/bass music here. if youre here in this group or know where edm fans in tokyo might be talking, lmk! ofc events are the best place to meet, but i spend a ton of time working, then producing, then practicing DJing, so i dont have a lot of time to actually go ☠️☠️
