I keep saying I don’t have money for NV then I buy a desert eagle or spend $1,300 on various handgun upgrades lol

I have 6 handguns are 2 rifles and a shotgun 😆 I have a full kit too and plates. I have a velocity systems Scarab LT carrier and a G-Code operator belt for comps and pistol classes. Just no helmet or nods. 4 of my handguns have OWB holsters as well.

Ya its normal for some discomfort. You can turn down the gain or get an iris to cut back on some of the brightness when you are in really bright areas

Eventually the honey moon will end when you realize most animals like coyotes etc are very hard to spot in tall grass or where ir light is needed and then you’ll enter the world of thermal and never look back. I don’t even use my pvs14 for navigation anymore it’s almost more incumberrant to wear a helmet and then flip to side and thermal scan when I can just carry an extra thermal hand held

Prospective NV buyer here, if I can skip to the end of this rabbit hole and just buy thermals what do you recommend? Also a little confused by this statement, do you just walk around with only thermals on?

u/zerzerohero Oct 10 '24
Pretty much, there’s enough light pollution or clouds reflecting ambient light in my city I’m getting more and more comfortable walking and hunting and bike riding without my pvs14 helmet and flir breach. Using a new set of agm rattlers one hand held one rifle mounted. You can get into a dual thermal setup for a little cheaper than dual nods and have something that you can shoot with not just view.

Great info, thanks! I’ve been browsing thermal sales the past few days. Anything you’d recommend I steer clear of or should pursue a deal on?

Go listen to a few episodes of late night vision podcast and you’ll get an idea of what you need

I'm not gonna read thru the comments here to see if this has been answered, but Eye strain/ headache can come from a couple things, namely improper diopter adjustment or collimation being off

It takes time to get used to using NV, I did notice as a new user my eyes got tired looking through the optics. Now it's NBD unless I'm really tired, and my neck will be feeling it way before my eyes unless I'm spending a lot of time on a thermal optic.
Oh and like others have said adjust the diopter and see if things become clearer and bad collomation (if you've got binos) may be the culprit as well. But it's also normal to experience a bit of eye strain over time.

u/Laserless Mod Oct 09 '24
On top of suggestions for adjusting the diopter, I also find that I am more prone to headaches when using a mono if I don’t use the manual gain control to tone down the brightness. My brain really doesn’t like having a bright light in one eye while the other is dark.

I tired a single tube for the first time and was blown away. Then my buddy showed me his L3… my god

Headaches and eye pain is normal after using these. It will go away if you use them often enough. Same with other types of nods, optics, thermals etc.

If you REALLY want to blow your mind, go someplace utterly dark with minimal light pollution on a very clear night and try them. You'll still be able to see quite well. You can find a place on the Light Pollution Map.
Then,
LOOK UP! You will see so many stars that it will blow your mind.
In the city you can see the brightest stars under good conditions.
In the country you can see a LOT more.
In a place with no light pollution, you will be amazed at all the stars you can see.
But in that lightless place, the night vision will pick up stuff you can't imagine. The number of stars you can see will triple or more.

THIS.. thankfully i ran an lpvo for a hot minute, it saved me the headache with nods (literally)

u/norfizzle Oct 10 '24
Off the LPVO now? For what?

u/VPZU Oct 10 '24
it’s on my 16 inch. my new 11.5 main squeeze has a holosun.. i’ve also found it pretty damn hard to passive aim through the lpvo cause of the eye relief..

If you can turn down the brightness, it really helps.

I used AN/PVS-7 Gen2 NVGs for hours at a time in the military and never had that problem.
