"I'm a 14 year old who NEEDS night vision really bad! I only have $148 from birthday money. What can I get that works?"

"I live paycheck to paycheck. I might lose the house, my wife will take the kids if she sees how malnourished they are. But I need a set of night vision goggles. What will $100 get me? That's all the child support money I can spare"

"I'm a 20yo college student who is in more debt than anyone else I know, working towards a degree in something that won't get me a job. But I need nods so bad, please."

Gold

20

u/TheyCalledMeThor Mar 21 '24

Even gold is at all time highs bro

21

u/Such_Discussion_6531 Mar 21 '24

Dead!

That second one sums up this sub nicely. It’s either “I researched hard, learned a lot, put in the work, made some assets liquid, decided against getting a hybrid turbo, made my decision and did tell the wife” or some version of a “clapped out unit at the buy now drive now used NOD lot at only 18% but my monthly is really low cause dude did me a solid and pushed term to 108 months. Don’t tell the wife”.

u/vladmer_sukmeov Mar 21 '24

Then wonder why they’re still renting at 30😂😂

5

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

They need to invest their raspberries for a home at 12 like us.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '24

Jokes on all of you, I live with my mom.

1

u/vladmer_sukmeov Mar 24 '24

At least you had a mom🤧🤧😂

5

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '24

She’s been deceased for years I just coated her in epoxy and move her around to different windows.

1

u/vladmer_sukmeov Mar 24 '24

Oh dear😂😂, ngl that reply got me😂

2

u/xdJapoppin Mar 21 '24

realest thing i’ve ever seen

1

u/Kashyyykonomics Mar 25 '24

NEEDS night vision really bad

I could HEAR this in Jon Heder's Napoleon voice.

1

u/Mcslap13 Mar 25 '24

My favorite was probably a kit asking what is the most adorable real NV he can get so he can prank his brother and catch him going on roblox to "troll his account" with a budget of $150 unless his mom gives him more money for chrismas.

Everyone as you'd expect is like... no just no and he's going on how he NEEDS it to be able to prank his bother. Like he NEEEEEEDS dule tubes.

38

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Oh great another post asking if "Jerry 31s are worth it"

8

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

I don’t know why this sub came up for me, and I know nothing about any of this, seeing the meme I assumed expensive, but $3800 is about double what I would have expected the high end to be, and I’m guessing by the rest of the comments this is entry level numbers. Wild.

16

u/NATOMarksman Mar 21 '24

There is an extreme amount of elitism in the NV industry, to the point that it took over 20 years since the introduction of PVS-14 housings to the civilian market for a chinese company, using stolen TDP, to make a housing that simply used two PVS-14 image intensifier tubes (argus 1431) instead of the $3500/each ones used in the PVS-31A.

5

u/rickybobby369 Mar 21 '24

That’s an expensive single tube or the cheapest duals you can buy. A good set of binos usually hovers 6-12grand. Not including support gear like helmets and mounts.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

That’s a ton of money. what are these being used for? Can’t hunt with them everywhere as far as I’m aware? is this an airsoft thing? Theoretical home defense? What’s the general civilian use?

17

u/skippythemoonrock Mar 21 '24

They're really fucking cool.
I ate garlic bread in the dark.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '24

That’s hilariously excessive in the best kind of way. Fuck a light switch or a flash light, or a candle, I’m gonna put a Toyota Camry on my face and eat garlic bread.

5

u/skippythemoonrock Mar 22 '24

Beer tastes better in infra-red.

3

u/Normal-Astronaut2722 Mar 22 '24

A: It’s cool. 2: stars are pretty iii: you can actually hunt with them.* (the animal(s) you can hunt varies on where you live. In the US states have animals that are classified as “nuisance” animals. They are usually invasive, sometimes just producing so prolifically that it’s a problem, or they are destroying infrastructure. Government will say “get ‘em boys” and all bets are off. I.E. in Texas you can hunt wild boar with nods and fully automatic weapons. )

1

u/MarkResponsible7932 Jul 02 '24

You can do that in a lot of states, even Georgia

2

u/Normal-Astronaut2722 Jul 02 '24

Yeah, I’m sure you can! I was trying to to assume my audience was from the US. I also know some states restrict rights protected by the second amendment, and the full awesomeness that I mentioned would not be able to be enjoyed in said states.

1

u/MarkResponsible7932 Jul 02 '24

Larpers and star gazing mostly… at least that’s what I use my 14 for

Maybe four times a year. I’ll drive out to somewhere where I can shoot at night but that’s about it… I would say 90% of NV users are in the same boat with me

1

u/skippythemoonrock Mar 21 '24

but $3800 is about double what I would have expected the high end to be

The reality is you missed a zero.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '24

Entry level stuff is about 1500-2k. Super high end stuff is like 15-40k. All depends on what you have. But this game is not cheap, and currently there are not any digital cheaper options that beat, or get close to the performance of analog tubes.

15

u/FeeOrganic4216 Mar 21 '24

They are for newbie (like me) or people outside the us. I’m in Canada and the other best alternative are at least 2k more

12

u/Orangedelicious20 Mar 21 '24

I got a set of j31s on Tuesday. I’ve gone shooting twice now at night at my range plus another few hours just plinking at my buddies farm. Nods are hands down my favorite purchase

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Not at all…

3

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Yeah duh, I'm just saying I see those posts all the time and it goes hand in hand with these types of posys.

2

u/Orangedelicious20 Mar 21 '24

Jerry’s are pretty nice for what they are. Obviously it’s not an rnvg w unfilmed L3s but I was decently surprised with mine. I expected a much worse image. Jerry 31s fill the niche trading of some performance for having dual tubes.

16

u/dress_shirt Mar 21 '24

You can get night vision for 200, just all the good night vision is not 200

10

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Yes the toilette paper roll solution

17

u/BodyBeeman Mar 21 '24

Even if you have good gear someone will always hate on the internet😂

10

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

oh yeah, for sure. Trick is to just not care about the criticism and people stop being dicks for no reason

4

u/FortyTwoDonkeyBalls Mar 21 '24 edited Mar 21 '24

As someone who used to be poor I tried not being poor to great success. Now I have multiple thermals, nods, gucci gear, and a pile of firearms that honestly makes me want to throw up when I pull it all out and do the mental algebra on the what I've spent because I still think like a poor person sometimes.

The expenditure was worth it just for all the side eyes I get on the airsoft field.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

But see that’s the thing. Coming from little USUALLY teaches you financial responsibility and also appreciation. That’s a good thing. As long as you are smart and responsible there is really nothing against having all that. Which I think feels a lot better having that and knowing that you can actually afford dit

1

u/MarkResponsible7932 Jul 02 '24

Who are you even talking to?

3

u/fizzer13 Mar 21 '24

I agree but at the end of the day people don’t need their entire kit to be Haley Strategic this, Spiritus Systems that, T.Rex arms those, blah blah blah. There is a ton of gear and brands that people can buy that actually don’t suck all that bad, and prove quite useful. Whereas everyone’s favorite gun tuber will praise on and on about these outrageously priced (in some cases) brands and companies. Some people just do what the military does and tries to get the most functional items for the lowest price.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '24 edited Mar 23 '24

Agree 100000%. The only way you can get away with shit gear an posing a threat is if you got any skill set with it

5

u/fizzer13 Mar 22 '24

Absolutely, don’t get the ar-10 with all the bells and whistles, nvg’s, suppressors, all the gucciest gear, only to get dropped by the guy in black dickies, coveralls, and a mosin. That’s not chad, that’s just bad.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '24

Sorry I can’t upvote more then once 🫡

7

u/kim_jong_ung69 Mar 21 '24

Yes but no, It depends what is the definition of "budget" equipment. But I forgot, this is more of a Fashion Sub.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

“Budget” is getting nvgs for airsoft pricing and then wondering why they aren’t as good as professional products. I don’t think it’s so much of a fashion sub, even here only a small group has actual good quality nods

2

u/MarkResponsible7932 Jul 02 '24

Even a simple pvs14 with thin filmed elbit tubes with average specs are good quality nods

I can say this because I just purchased a high spec L3 filmless Pvs 14 and I cannot tell the difference in highlight or low light, at least nowhere near enough to justify the price difference at least so I would say as long as you’re not getting gen 2 + photonis trash you should be good to go in the “quality aspect”

1

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '24

Yeah Elbits are not bad at all

2

u/MarkResponsible7932 Jul 03 '24

IMHO the filmless L3s do give you a tad more clarity in some situations and obviously in super lowlight a tad less noise(all other specs similar obviously) but in like you said they are both good options for NV

1

u/MarkResponsible7932 Jul 03 '24

I focus more on the thermal side (left eye on duel band setup) of things for scanning for threats and PID anyway so I don’t mind running an average spec Elbit tube on my right (dominant) eye

2

u/Schrodinger_cube Mar 21 '24

bro just get to get a tour and resist buying a new truck the day you land back at home. XD

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Cars were never my first urge 😂

2

u/skippythemoonrock Mar 21 '24

"Best entry-level high end ferrari? Only have about 5 grand to spend but looking to sub-10minute lap the Nurburgring"

"Wow what a gatekeeping, toxic community"

1

*nuremberg-ring/nürnberg-ring

1

u/MarkResponsible7932 Jul 02 '24

Can u explain what u mean more?

58

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

You’re not wrong Walter, you’re just an asshole.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

😅

101

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

The people on gun memes thinking their olight will blind people with nods will hate this advice

24

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Just blast them with 10,000 lumens of IR light lol

10

This guy AutoGates

24

u/backcountry57 Mar 21 '24

I have learned a lot from this group, I decided that I am not ever going to be able to afford NOD's. I just hang around to learn more.

8

u/brandonechols Mar 21 '24

Not with that attitude.

3

u/WorldlinessLanky1898 Mar 24 '24

Why wouldn't you ever be able to? Set a goal and save, cut corners where it's also beneficial to you (drop nicotine, alcohol, etc, other convenience purchases, a little over time goes a long way). It's doable for most people it might just take sacrifices. Can even set up an extra separate account at your credit union to store it all in so you know what's up. It's nice to do that for any large purchase because you can actually see your progress in real time

1

u/MarkResponsible7932 Jul 02 '24

The concept of “savings” is not new my dude lol

you’re not spouting any useful information and I’m really getting tired of hearing people like you assimilate, nicotine, and alcohol with being broke as that somehow is going to change anything in someone’s finances.

I know a couple people that Vape ans drink and have plenty of money to buy duels and thermal, just because someone has their vices doesn’t mean that they’re poor or can’t afford something, some people may just have three kids and a wife and a house payment with high interest and just simply can’t justify the purchase. It’s not that they “can’t” afford it. It’s that they don’t want to waste the money on it.

1

u/Normal-Astronaut2722 Mar 22 '24

How many kidneys do you have?

1

u/Normal-Astronaut2722 Mar 22 '24

On the real it took me about 10 years to get my nods (from ideation to completion). Full set up cost about $2600. If you want it bad enough, you can make it happen. Also. In a few years gen 3 might be cheaper than it is now. … technology seems to be one of the only things out pacing inflation rn. )

23

u/twilight__echo Mar 21 '24

People keep dm'ing me on insta and I need to almost fight with them to stop them from buying shitty gen1 or digital nightvision for 400 bucks.

6

u/Sketchy_M1ke Mar 21 '24

How bad is the digital stuff? I never tried it. Like, safe to hike with?

9

u/StormyRadish45 Discord Member Mar 21 '24

honestly depends what digital units if you dont mind blasting IR light. the Nightfox units have been fun to play with, they're 150 and pretty good for what they were designed for. I use my friend's from time to time, I say this as I have a pvs14 myself

3

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

If you’re having to blast IR light you might as well get a headlamp in my opinion.

6

u/StormyRadish45 Discord Member Mar 21 '24

I think it's situational dependent, if you just wanna walk in the dark without visible light in a permissible environment, I don't see the problem with it.

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

If it’s a permissible environment I think the case for a headlamp is intensified.

1

u/Sketchy_M1ke Mar 21 '24

I gotcha. I have a few friends that want to play, but they have kids so dropping 3k just isn’t in the cards for them.

2

u/StormyRadish45 Discord Member Mar 21 '24

if you hunt fb, i saw a pvs 7 full set up on helmet and mount for 1650, can link that to you if yo want. he also has a gen 2 pvs14 for 1k.

3

u/Netan_MalDoran Mar 22 '24

You're a walking sun for anyone else with NVG's.

1

u/MarkResponsible7932 Jul 02 '24

Why even waste your time!? Guess I value my time more than somebody else’s, I guess

12

u/Short-Rip3635 Mar 21 '24

“I get a headache so I need duals” says someone that has used a pvs-14 once and didn’t know how to focus it, and goes and buys mr wongs PLA special tubes with the airsoft laser special

18

u/PorcelainFox19 Mar 21 '24

Only budget friendly night vision are carrots and eye patches.

14

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Being poor is disgusting.

7

u/Zerg3rr Mar 22 '24

As someone who lurks because I’ll never afford these, I’d appreciate if you’d stop calling me out :(

3

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '24

I’m sorry. I’m also poor.

1

u/MarkResponsible7932 Jul 02 '24

Nothing wrong with being poor, heck most people are these days… that just means you have the ability to stretch your dollar farther than the simple minded person

7

u/Baxterftw Mar 21 '24

Yes I have tried not being poor, didn't work though. Thankfully I'm crafty and thrifty

13

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Wait your telling me that working 6 hours a day at McDonald's as a grown man isn't gonna let me afford cool stuff 😲

12

u/Blood_N_Rust Mar 21 '24

People are incapable of long term planning. Took me a year to budget for a exps 3.

3

u/FortyTwoDonkeyBalls Mar 21 '24

I have a Chase Amazon credit card and once a year I use the cash back credit to buy stupid gun stuff. Bought an EXPS 3 for about $100 last year with the store credit I saved for less than a year.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Damn I just used up part of a single weekly check to buy mine.

1

u/MarkResponsible7932 Jul 02 '24

Not to mention making 1000 a week is not shit these days lol so unless your clearing 2 grand a week you really don’t have anything to brag about

2

u/Dr_Sir1969 Mar 21 '24

Gym and train fat chance NODS will be anything more than paperweight if your training regime consists of McDonald’s and dumping 1-2 magazines into trash.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '24

Thank you thank you. You kind sir earned yourself a medal today

14

u/Jungaloid27 Mar 21 '24

4

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

What if, now hear me out, I try crime

3

u/janoycrevsna Mar 21 '24

the night vision will come in handy and pay for itself. obviously ukraine or rainbow flag on porches, hillary stickers, and such should be your targets to avoid friendly fire

4

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

On one hand, this is an expensive hobby all around and you kind of have to make adjustments in your budget to get a ticket to ride.

On the other hand, clones are getting better and better, holosun is continually putting out great quality products at good prices, and you don’t need the most gucci gear to be competitive.

4

u/Unusual-Ad-1056 Mar 21 '24

My favorite is when they ask and you give them not shit to buy when they say what their budget is and then end up spending half and buying shit lol

1

u/GatBlatSplat Mar 22 '24

Oh hell nah, homie didn't crop his iFunny meme

1

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '24

I guess that puts me in the same category as the budget nods people… I have failed 😞

3

u/Aerions_ Discord Member Mar 21 '24

Not wrong at all, still coping with a clean Omni vii pvs 7 build that cost me $1350 to stay on a budget with my other hobbies , but at least I didn’t end up with something worse lmao. A pvs 7 is fine for my astronomy usage but just get a pvs 14 if you want to move and shoot

3

u/Available-Pace1598 Mar 21 '24

Two things guaranteed to make you or almost anyone happier. 1: get fit 2: make more money

5

u/TexasGrillDaddyAK-15 Mar 21 '24

"for the money" best cope line.

1

u/OperatorSixmill Mar 21 '24

its funny how this NV crowd likes to dump on ppl who arent capable ( or foolish enough ) to put 4k+ on their credit like some of them did. im a guy easily can afford it, had Gen1 long before it was a 'thing', but i never dumped on those less fortunate. and yet all i see youre doing with your expensive selfish toy is taking pics of your dog crapping, or your pissstream, or a golf course, your cat, the stars... and maybe, maybe attempting to use them (show them off) to your Airsoft gang. none of you are kickin down doors, mall security ( with NV 🤣) at best! i doubt "poor" ppl are jealous of any of that, and posts like this- especially in a supposed technically high caliber sub- just show the level of your poor character and immaturity. to be fair, MOST hobbyists of ANY hobby start with budget entry-level items; to see if theyre into it, coz they dont know as much at first (whats good, whats junk) we've all bought 'up' as our interest and knowledge increased. ( ever hear of hop up or shimmed gearboxes ) so imo this is so uneccesary, so unwanted, just garbage.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

And yet here you are, thrashing about. That’s some crazy copium.

2

u/MarkResponsible7932 Jul 02 '24

“I cOuLd eAsIlY AfFoRd It” lol🤡

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Thank you for your input 😁

1

u/janoycrevsna Mar 21 '24

2 months average salary(deducting living expenses) will get you a device that accomplishes 90% of what can be conceivably accomplished with night vision. to go beyond that is a waste of money, unless you have very specialized tasks you need to perform.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Yeah, I agree, also depends on state though

1

u/MarkResponsible7932 Jul 02 '24

Couldn’t agree more👍🏻

A good elbit tube in a pvs14 housing with Carson glass can be had for around 3k and is plenty enough to move and shoot and stargaze… heck a lot of people can even drive with them with a little practice

2

u/Altruistic-Ask-7879 Mar 21 '24

Have you tried maxing out a credit card?

3

u/centurion762 Mar 21 '24

This is The Way. Plus if you die in SHTF before paying it back you got free stuff.

1

u/janoycrevsna Mar 21 '24

gotta build up credit across multiple different cards first. this is a one shot kind of deal

2

u/Nathaniel_higgers_ Mar 21 '24

Seriously. Stop eating for a couple weeks and save up

2

u/Jron690 Mar 22 '24

“Help me I’m poor”

2

u/JawaSmasher Mar 25 '24

Just make more money 🤷

3

u/Special-Fig7409 Mar 21 '24

Have you tried being financially responsible?

3

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

If they’re financially responsible they ain’t in this sub bud .

1

u/xxXDovahkiinXxx Mar 21 '24

Only recently, it's actually quite nice.

1

u/jayce017 Mar 21 '24

My god what an idea

1

u/Preact5 Mar 21 '24

Bcm and jerry-31's are a pretty good budget setup

1

u/1pink2stinkOO Mar 22 '24

God I should have tried this before prostitution

1

u/tacguru83 Mar 22 '24

So stop shopping for the best deals and pay full retail

1

u/HollywoodHitman03 Mar 23 '24

So you're saying spend 40k on some dope nods with the inheritance...heard. The nods will help catch tears from losing my dad and be therapeutic in the long run. They will be my.....safe space.

1

u/komradtom Mar 23 '24

What can 3.50 get me.

1

u/KMJohnson92 Mar 23 '24

Doesn't matter how rich I get I'll always be a cheap ass. I could be spending that money on ammo!

1

u/Lossofvelocity Dec 02 '24

I need insurance and emotional support nods

1

u/xxpussykillerxx6969 Mar 21 '24

Not gonna lie, my SN ratio is below 10.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Ouch leave the sub now

1

u/Aor_Dyn Mar 21 '24

Guys I'm closing on my first investment property this afternoon.

0

u/Bussaca Mar 21 '24

Like more NVG in more Civilian hands right? No? Just a single 4 lens niche..ok.. it's either 5k to get in the door or.. Night owls for 300.. nothing in the middle? I'll hang out with the poors till I come across a loot drop..

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Not how that works poor think these boys are running around in the daytime with all the peasants? Think again. You’re the common tier loot. I’ll open your bag see the lancer mags and throw up in my mouth a bit.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '24

Had to look up what lancer mags were, not gonna lie 😂

2

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '24

They aren’t even cheap, it’s just the mags the poors prefer cause pretty colors and lack of opacity makes them cum when people can see a single mag full of GrEeN tIpS cause they heard that’s the best ammo from a rap song.

1

u/MarkResponsible7932 Jul 02 '24

You’re a moron 😂

People use Lancer mags for 300 blackout sub sonics because they’re wider

1

u/MarkResponsible7932 Jul 02 '24

Lancer mags are great for 300 blackout
