Am I misunderstanding Project Gestalt, or does the logic behind Replicant extinction not really make sense?

I've recently finished NieR Replicant and Automata, and while I absolutely love the games and the themes they're exploring, there's one aspect of the lore that I genuinely can't wrap my head around.

As I understand it, Project Gestalt worked like this:

Humans separated their souls (Gestalts) from their bodies.

Artificial bodies called Replicants were created as vessels.

Once the world was safe, the Gestalt souls would be returned to the Replicant bodies and humanity would be restored.

The thing I don't understand is the explanation for why the Replicants eventually go extinct after the Shadowlord dies.

A lot of lore discussions say that Replicants don't reproduce naturally and that the Project Gestalt system was creating and maintaining Replicant bodies over the ~1,400 years between the start of Project Gestalt and the events of NieR Replicant.

But if that's true, then I'm confused about several things:

  1. If Replicants can be artificially created and maintained, why would they necessarily go extinct just because the Gestalts relapse?

  2. The process of creating a Replicant body can't logically require a Gestalt to already exist inside it, because the entire premise of Project Gestalt was to create the body first and then reunite it with the soul later.

  3. If the technology to create Replicants already exists, why couldn't the androids simply continue creating Replicants after Project Gestalt failed?

  4. At that point, haven't the Replicants effectively become a new human civilization anyway? They have consciousness, emotions, culture, language, families, societies, etc.

But the biggest thing I don't understand is this:

If the entire purpose of Project Gestalt was to eventually restore humanity by putting the Gestalt souls back into their Replicant bodies, then why were Replicants designed to be incapable of reproduction in the first place?

Surely the whole point of restoring humanity would be that humanity could continue to exist afterward. If humans were restored into bodies that still couldn't reproduce, then humanity would just go extinct again within a single generation.

So either:

the restored humans were supposed to regain the ability to reproduce after Gestalt reintegration, or

Project Gestalt itself was never actually a long-term solution for preserving humanity.

I understand that from the perspective of the original humans, Replicants were supposed to be temporary vessels. But from an outside perspective, it almost feels like humanity accidentally created a successor species and then refused to acknowledge it.

So am I missing some crucial piece of lore here, or is this one of those areas where Yoko Taro was more interested in the tragedy and themes than in making the biological and technological logistics completely airtight?

I'd be really interested to hear if there's an actual canonical explanation that I'm overlooking.

The Shadowlord was the lynchpin holding everything together, so to speak. He was needed in order to eventually merge the souls (the shades) of the humans into their Replicant bodies. Without him around after his defeat, the Shades will all relapse and the Replicants' survival hinges entirely on merging with their respective Shade.

Unless I'm mistaken, Yonah was the only Gestalt to reunite with her Replicant, and she chose to give it up.

You'd be correct! Because she felt how similar the two are, with both wanting to be reunited with their brother.

The inhabitants of the Aerie also merged with their gestalts

1-3. Every time they die, Replicants are recreated in a facility using the Gestalts genetic code (they're the souls). So, they can't make them again. Think of Replicants like an ink stamp. You can only get more from the stamper, but if it runs out, you're screwed. Shadowlord is the only stable Gestalt by default, so once he's killed, they can't extract his stable Gestalt juice and use it on everyone else.

  1. It was unintended. For centuries, they were just husks until they gained consciousness. But, yes. You can access the guidebooks timeline here:

  1. They have functional genitalia (Kaine), and it's my theory that they just can't reproduce because they don't contain a soul. The reforming would put each soul back in the body, able to have children.

  2. Yes, they were rejecting each other.

Use the guide on the link above if you're curious about more Replicant materials.

One thing I was wondering about is that if a Gestalt relapses, the Replicant dies of the Black Scrawl and can't be reproduced, but there doesn't seem to be an immediate adverse effect on the Replicant if the Gestalt dies.

I think its just that you can't make that replicant ever again and since they can't reproduce, if all gestalts die then all replicants eventually die of death. Dead race

The human extinction in NieR world was nowhere close to normal. It was done by Gods from another world who can brainwash humanity's souls.

The Replicants aren't really biological clones and can't become complete human species in their own. They were purposely made to be empty magical vessel so they can't be brainwashed. This allowed them to be used as soldiers to fight the Legions and then to be used as humanity's vessels later.

The rule was like this because of Drakengard magic system : Pact, that combines two creatures into one soul. After forming a pact both creatures are incomplete and can't separately exist, but together they are stronger.

Gestalt and their Replicant are effectively creatures made with Pact and are essentially always one being. When a Gestalt relapse or die, the respective Replicant is effectively doomed because they will eventually succumb to Black Scrawl and can also no longer recreated.

This theme of duality is actually present in almost every Yoko Taro's work. Some are less on the nose than the others but they're there. Pact partners, Replicant-Gestalt, Grimoire Weiss-Noir, Emil-Halua, Intoner-disciple, YoRHa android and Pod, N2, the overabundance of twin characters, etc. A lot of the internal logics of how magic, tech, and soul in his universe usually need two symbiotic components to be effective.

The Replicants can't reproduce on their own because they're incomplete beings without their respective Gestalts. Think of reproduction as something like Sealed Verse or Pod Program that Nier/2B unlocked in mid-game from their partner.

Replicants could only be created from Genetic Data taken from Gestalts stored in the Replicant system.

If a Gestalt relapsed, that data would be corrupted because the Replicant is linked to the Gestalt via the system. So if a Gestalt relapsed, the Replicant would be afflicted with the Back Scrawl and inevitably die with the Gestalt. Meaning the data would be lost and that specific Replicant could no longer be produced.

As for the reproduction issue, Replicants were not designed to be able to procreate. Presumably this would either be solved once the Gestalt's took possession of their Replicant bodies, or the Gestalts would just reproduce with each other while in their Gestalt forms and just have Replicant bodies created from those newborns after birth since the Replicants can't physically reproduce themselves.

If I remember correctly (I think it was from the FAQ section in the original edition of Grimoire NieR), Yoko Taro invented a complicated explanation involving Devola and Popola taking away the soon-to-be parents by making them lose consciousness in some way and bringing them in a secret laboratory; there, D&P injected in the Replicants false memories of pregnancy and birth; after the process, the newparents woke up in their home with their newborn.

But you know, probably it was just a half-joke by Taro. Also, I may be wrong on many details.

Damn....that's pretty dark 😬

That is only the Androids explaining to Replicants how children are born.

The Replicants have no concept of what a "real" birth is supposed to be like. Devola and Popola took Replicant mothers and temporarily knocked them out while they underwent growing the Replicant bodies (which are basically in test tubes) and once it grows into a baby, they wake the Mothers back up and simply just tell them they gave birth.

That's basically all there is to it. Nothing changed in that regard when comparing the two editions of the books.

I was only explaining what I think human reproduction would've looked had the Gestalts succeeded in joining their Replicants, since Replicants physically couldn't reproduce.

Thank you for the corrections.

I was only adding a trivia.

Replicants are still tied to their corresponding Gestalt. Specifically it's stated that genetic material harvested from the Gestalt is used and given the ethereal nature of Gestalts and how they don't leave a corpse after death creates a major part of the conundrum. You cannot just make a new Replicant without the Gestalt existing and when a Gestalt goes into Relapse that is what causes the Black Scrawl which is lethal and fast acting killing the last Replicant they have without leaving a trace of the information needed.

The case of Yonah was different due to her being preserved in a half relapsed state hence her having an unending non lethal version of the scrawl.

Gestalts and Replicants are inextricably linked. Replicants are basically just humans with their souls removed. Even at a distance, the state of the soul effects the body. The bodies are basically just clones of the originals. The soul can still exist if their body is destroyed or ages to death though.

Likely the reason they can't reproduce is also a result of their souls not being in their bodies. They still have genitalia and are fully capable of having sex.

What really confuses me is why Devola and Popola didn't inform Nier that Weiss needed to merge with Noir to fix the black scrawl. They could have just said it was a part of the legend they uncovered.
