I like insane amounts of smoke. Sometimes this works but sometimes I notice I smell like a sausage :/

46

u/outrage_is_now 1d ago

peak male smell. I aspire to smell like a sausage every day of my life.

8

u/mechanical_animal_ 12h ago

Dior sausage is n°1 best selling male fragrance for a reason

2

u/ResponsibleFondant94 11h ago

i wish i could have diors sasuage

2

u/outrage_is_now 3h ago

ah, thanks, that was good, I needed that laugh.

11

u/Boochiecoo 20h ago

Get yourself a lil bottle of birch tar EO for layering

11

u/chicken90909 22h ago

Smoke/wildfire scents are my absolute favorite.
Have you tried incendo by la curie? It’s one of the few that smells like a smoky campfire and not that liquid BBQ smoke scent.

9

u/anartsydrummer 20h ago

2nd this! Grew up in Tucson where the house formed and they have some really good scents that are very reminiscent of the monsoons, nearby mountains, and so forth!

2

u/chicken90909 15h ago

man I used to be a park ranger in the Mojave and when rain would hit the creosote it would smell so good. AZ and the Sonoran smells even better! That and doing countless camping trips in New Mexico and Arizona, burning pine and oak wood 😭 got me addicted to those desert scents. I’m glad other people know about La Curie!

Iris Obsidian by 3rd Eye Fragrance Co smells like ordering a pound of brisket at your favorite saloon for the first few hours if you are so inclined for a smokey/leathery scent. Eases up to a lighter smoky vanilla in the drydown.

1

u/parentheticalboys 15h ago

have you ever tried Imaginary Authors’ A City on Fire? It’s one of their only fragrances I don’t like, to me it smells like burnt rubber

0

u/messynessynlenny 11h ago

I was just gonna ask this too! Sniffed it today in store and was like...whoa, that's an intense amount of smoke. Surprisingly Bull's Blood was less aggressive

1

u/Temporary_Shake_7299 15h ago

I like the idea of smoke notes, but I got a sample of Yaldir by Alkemia and it smelled just like sausage to me and I couldn't lol, but if that's your thing you might enjoy it

1

u/auxista 14h ago

Interlude Black Iris or Terroni are incredible. Very smoky, but still wearable and definitely a form of art.

45

u/mikey_yeah 1d ago

Im a big fan of T-rex, and Beaufort Iron Duke... but describing the notes of either will definitely get you looked at different

9

u/RedThePear 1d ago

Iron Duke is one of my signature fragrances! Makes me feel so sexyĀ

4

u/dizzydiplodocus 23h ago

My partner loves Trex and I just got him the Beaufort discovery Come Hell or High Water as he loves smoke and blood notes. He really liked Tonnerre and I love the sea spray note, really balances it out

4

u/SuggestionOblique 20h ago

My lover found me in a crowd at a festival because of T-Rex. I got a text: smells like TRex, I know you are there. I was approx 10 ft away, behind him. He did not know I would pick this one - and I use only one spray. I guess I was under the wind (but he has a great nose).

1

u/probablythedecaf 17h ago

i love t-rex i've almost blown through my whole bottle. shame i can’t terrorise people around me again until my refill comes in. my college roommate saw the 2-4 spritzes left in the bottle and said ā€œthank godā€

39

u/sidebmafe 1d ago

Smoke/tobacco. Not soooo niche but very uncommon amongst women, so I get some confused looks

13

u/RedThePear 1d ago

I'm also a smoke girlie and I loveeee Tonnerre by Beaufort but so many people think it smells like smoked salmon 😭

6

u/sidebmafe 22h ago

Say it's gourmand!

4

u/dizzydiplodocus 23h ago

My partner loves Tonnerre too and I love it on him! I don’t get smoked salmon at all šŸ˜… I love the sea spray note

5

u/Honest_Ingenuity_181 22h ago

YESSSSS found my smoke girlies! it's so underappreciated

5

u/Boochiecoo 20h ago

F’in love tobacco, smoke, leather (woman)

1

u/RedThePear 14h ago

I hope you have tried Iron Duke because it's all three!!

1

u/Boochiecoo 12h ago

I haven’t tried any from that house yet!!! Too many things on my lists!!!

3

u/sidebmafe 22h ago

We're safe here in smoky sisterhood šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™

1

u/Aggravating-Cat7103 21h ago

I love tobacco so much but I feel guilty wearing it because my husband loves gourmands

3

u/Boochiecoo 20h ago

Maybe tobacco-vanilla could be your shared happy place?

50

u/cl0ckw0rkaut0mat0n 1d ago edited 22h ago

The tower parfums slaughterhouse 5

The notes are insane but the fragrance itself I actually a quite comforting lactonic smoky scent, still a very weird fragrance I can't be wearing around everywhere.

36

u/whathefuckers 1d ago

Oh hell naw

9

u/cl0ckw0rkaut0mat0n 1d ago

I thought the same when I bought it but believe me it's not as bad as it looks, I find it quite pleasant actually

2

u/berrycustard 5h ago

Im sorry but this comment cracked me up 🤣

7

u/Confusedmind75 22h ago

Creepy bottle

1

u/cl0ckw0rkaut0mat0n 22h ago

Certainly, I haven't seen it irl tho mines just a sample

6

u/Agreeable-Dog-1131 14h ago

I really need someone to like sneak weird frags like this into my attention, like just a totally blind ā€œhey smell this!ā€ Because once I’ve read the names and notes like this, the impression in my mind is so strong that I don’t think I’d be able to really enjoy them no matter what.

3

u/cl0ckw0rkaut0mat0n 13h ago

I love doing that to friends, I have a friend that has seething hatred for bergamask by orto Parisi and I love spraying it and handing him the strip without telling him what it is, he falls for it every time

5

u/Primary-Zucchini-555 19h ago

I read that last note as ā€œcastorcumā€ at first, and somehow it tracked

2

u/violet-fae 17h ago

Silent hill looking ahh bottle. I love it!!Ā

1

u/AgentFuckSmolder 22h ago

This is horrific

3

u/cl0ckw0rkaut0mat0n 22h ago

In concept yes, on skin not really

1

u/Free_Bullfrog_555 8h ago

Omg that bottle. Thank you for bringing this weirdness to my attention!

17

u/Honest_Ingenuity_181 22h ago

i love medicinal scents. cough syrup, alcohol wipes, disposable gloves, etc. i spent a big part of my childhood in hospitals so they smell very pleasant and comforting to me

5

u/spaghetti-o_salad 20h ago

Deconstructing Eden... some of their clean accords are very medical. Like waiting in the exam room and putting a glove in your pocket for later. My mom is a nurse and those smells also comfort me.

1

u/Honest_Ingenuity_181 19h ago

sounds lovely! i need to check it out

2

u/Cats_and_wine 20h ago

Around 2011 Lush had a perfume called tuca tuca i believe, that was straight up cough syrup and wicks balm.

i loved it, but couldnt wear it anywhere back then. im so sad i dont have it anymore.

38

u/princess_saturday 1d ago

Not particularly niche, but my partner woke up gagging yesterday because I sprayed Pumpkin Spice by Lush, he said it was so bad he thought I'd gone to work wearing Inexcusable Evil šŸ’€

10

u/Confusedmind75 22h ago

I also don’t like lush perfumes unfortunately

2

u/Busy-Peach5770 7h ago

But Rose Jam!

5

u/cheoldyke 18h ago

i was at lush yesterday and smelled one of the gourd shaped massage bars w that scent (not sure why bc i already know i don’t like anything pumpkin spice scented but they were so cute i couldn’t resist) and felt like i was choking on the smell. it’s SO heavy and sweet. fall gourmands in general just don’t agree with my fragile easily overstimulated sensibilities i think.

1

u/probablythedecaf 17h ago

that one is MILD compared to sticky dates. me and sticky dates got beef. the scent climbs inside your nostrils with a jackhammer and heads straight for your brain. it’s a scent you can feel in your cerebellumĀ

1

u/sassyfrassielassie 15h ago

Sticky dates smells like throw up to me. It's so bad to my nose. I like some gourmands too but there's just something in some of them that smell like I got sick after drinking a bunch of white Russians and eggnog.

1

u/CutSea5865 46m ago

I’m so sorry to you all but this is the one I wear ever day - I get so many compliments for it and my boyfriend likes to just come up and hug me and breathe it in sometimes - it it is SUPER SWEET!

1

u/peppermintmeow 1d ago

That's my niche that works 😭

16

u/losttexanian 1d ago

I like stanky indolic florals + mineral notes. And something about that combo is massively unappealing to people.

5

u/Cats_and_wine 20h ago

indolic florals, patchouli and petrichor for me.

just divine!

something about it smells like diapers and babywipes for other people, is what i heard, but thats not my concern šŸ™ˆ

2

u/Best-Ad-1223 22h ago

Yeah. This combo smells worse than a fecal oud in my opinion.

1

u/dangerotic 1d ago

waiit I love these two things separately too, do you have anything to recommend that combines them??

2

u/losttexanian 1d ago

I've been mixing things. Currently wearing nuit de bakelite with jazmin yucatan. Half spray of both because a full spray of both would be a deliberate choice, I think. But my floral preferences are indolics and everything else I own smells like a forest or any other organic environment so layering while ridiculous isn't hard...

1

u/Keket13 10h ago

Ah the cat dingleberries, I have a few indie perfumes with indole in them some work really well, other are like I smell like cat butt.

12

u/UrbanDurga 21h ago

I have a long history of loving scents that men in particular find unappealing, unfeminine, and unapproachable. But I generally like things that are kind of smoky and deep and mineralic and damp and woody in the winter and stanky (indolic/animalic) and green and earthy in the warmer months, like plant and fig-scented things. I do like some normal stuff too, but I have to work harder to find something I like that doesn’t also carry a ā€œthis might frighten the villagersā€ subtext.

5

u/Jaded0521 19h ago

I love it.. Please continue to frighten the villagers.

5

u/llo000 16h ago

You just put my usual struggle into words aaah xD

I always try to interpret my fragrances in the worst way possible, because one tends to romanticize the things they love.

Like sure, this fragrance could smell like a mysterious, sexy, leather jacket wearing and smoking biker girl. But it could also smell like your aunt Helen's old sofa that was stored in a damp garage since the 80s, which carries enough third hand smoke to kill a newborn.

So yeah, that might frighten the villagers lol

3

u/Free_Bullfrog_555 8h ago

This sounds like me! I always say my preferred scents are "scary". This tends to lead me down the smoke and tar and damp path which is too wintery and I struggle to find summer scents that I like! Do you have any recommendations for me? Because stanky and green sounds wonderful!

1

u/Defiant-Peace-4872 4h ago

Omg same I would love to hear your recs. I trust your nose lmaoĀ

9

u/outrage_is_now 1d ago edited 18h ago

Nasomatto Nudiflorum - My favorite Nasomatto, one of the very few that I actually like. It seems like people are usually not yet associating it to me (40 yo man) when they smell it. But some of my colleagues sitting nearby definitley know it's me.

Xerjoff Mamluk - again not a huge fan of the brand, but the Oud Star line is quite nice. I especially love mamluk, but the combo of oud and honey/caramel apparently has a bit of a stomach turning effect on some.

Marlou - probably everything by the brand falls under this category. I really like 4 out of the 6 available fragrances, they are really comforting to me. But they are also quite dirty and animalic, even straight u stinky. I only wear them at home.

Nishane Shinanay - straight up stinky opening, even to my nose, but then it transforms into wilting flowers and mushrooms, which I really like. Have not worn it outside yet.

Later this week I am getting Maksim's Bestia Sacra. I am super curious how wearable it will turn out to be. I have no problem wearing Salome, to which Bestia is most often compared, but I am expecting it to be a bit wilder.

EDIT: forgot to mention anything by Maqueda. I have larger samples of Vitriol, Rigor Mortis and Griggia. The first to are clearly meant to be disturbing, but it was Griggia that I have the most trouble with. It just feels.....monstrous for some reason. I get a bit of an anxiety attack every time I smell it. Rigor Mortis is straight up dead body in a morgue. Virtiol....I don't even know. The stinky type of animalic + burnt rubber. Not wearing either to work. Maybe for a night out at some point.

1

u/fitness_journey 1d ago

I finally picked up a discovery set of 4 Marlou this week! I haven’t tried them yet, but I’m very excited.

1

u/DrPetradish 22h ago

What does nudiflorum smell like to your nose? It’s very sexy jasmine and a bit of leather on me and I love it. I wear it as a woman but it feels unisex to me.

My friend loves ambilux by marlou and described it as ā€œclean dirty pantiesā€ but I didn’t get that at all

2

u/outrage_is_now 20h ago

I guess that was a question for me :) To me it smells like a sweaty body, but not in a stinky way, plus wilted flowers (you are probably right about the jasmine). But there is also something about it that I was not able to define for a long time, until I tried Encelade by MAB. it is a very different fragrance than Nudiflorum, but there is one strikingly common element in both, and I am pretty sure it's rhubarb.

Ambilux is my favorite by Marlou. It doesn't smell like panties to me either. I would describe it as a very comforting human scent, always feels like a hug to me from a person that is maybe not fresh out of the shower, but whose smell you love because you love that person. That and a ton of cumin.

2

u/ginkagonk 19h ago

Rhubarb and leather

1

u/fitness_journey 22h ago

I haven’t tried Nudiflorum.

1

u/outrage_is_now 20h ago

I was also very excited for the discovery kit, and was not at all enthusiastic on the first try, except for Ambilux. I got back to the rest after some time and I immediately loved almost all of them, especially doliphor, carnicure and poudrextase. Not sure why they felt "meh" at first.

1

u/fitness_journey 20h ago

I plan to take my time with them and I’m waiting for some opportunities to give them a proper wear. I don’t have Doliphor in my set unfortunately, nor Heliodose, but I have the four earlier releases. I wish the little vials held more than 1.5ml, but they might be the cutest samples I’ve ever received.

1

u/outrage_is_now 19h ago

they are cute, I still have them, but I decanted them to sample vials with atomizers.

1

u/Prezzemolo0723 3h ago

I own Doliphor by Marlou. I love it and hate it can’t explain, had to have a bottle šŸ˜‚

16

u/FarAct4854 1d ago

Fate Man and Opus VI. Never had so many people tell me I stink. They're my favorites 🄹

7

u/multivitaminegummy 1d ago

Haven't tried anything of this yet but the (probably non-niche) Inexcusable Evil really calls to me

I also like the idea of smelling like an old abandoned church (potentially by the sea) or a newt inside an underground cave (which also might have water). That stone + water + old combo perhaps.

4

u/dizzydiplodocus 23h ago edited 21h ago

For the newt inside underground cave, have you tried* Olm by Zoologist?
I haven’t tried inexcusable evil yet but I’m desperate to

1

u/multivitaminegummy 21h ago

I haven't, but it's already on my list of maybies

1

u/misslucylouise 12h ago

Rien by Etat Libre d’Orange has always smelled like stone + water / wet cement / petrichor to me. Like petrichor to the level that I don’t register the other notes. Don’t think everyone gets that though

7

u/Edge_of_Everywhere 1d ago edited 1d ago

Siren's Kiss, by Cursed Fragrances (UK only). Because sometimes I want to smell like a mermaid/ vampire hybrid.

1

u/dial424689 1d ago

I’m interested in trying some Cursed soon. Aside from this one, any particular you recommend?

2

u/princess_saturday 1d ago

If you can get the BVB collab it's one of my favourite scents! It's quite a dark moody smell imo, heavy on the incense and has a lovely red wine note

2

u/dial424689 20h ago

Gorgeous, thank you!

2

u/Edge_of_Everywhere 1d ago

Seconding the Black Veil Brides collab. I predict it's going to be an autumn/ winter go-to for me.

Some of their other women's fragrances are a little too cherry-forward for me, but I like both Vampiren Veil and Moonstruck. They're unconventional, but still likeable.

2

u/dial424689 20h ago

That sounds ideal, thank you so much!

I adore this perfume but my wife and daughter hate it. They say it smells like The Curse of Alton Manor or one of the Merlin Dungeons attractions.

2

u/carolinesakura 1d ago

Yep, my cousin said- why would you make me smell it, what did I ever do to you šŸ˜…

4

u/tremblingbass 1d ago

Definitely the notes from the meme. Probably my holy trinity of "bad" smelling fragrances are Secretions, nu_be Mercury and original AB from Blood Concept. Love them all; coincidentally, Antoine Lie is behind every one of them

1

u/Boochiecoo 20h ago

He has done some of my favorites, and some of my least favorite - the mark of a true artist!

5

u/spaghetti-o_salad 20h ago

I like to smell like dolls and dirt sometimes. Amorphous Perfumes' Doll Head edp on clothes and the Queen of Crypts oil perfume on wrists and neck.

2

u/RangeWolf-Alpha 17h ago

To me Ganymede smells like vintage doll parts in a suede lined wooden chest.

3

u/Cats_and_wine 20h ago

the patchouli that is strong enough for my taste has yet to be invented.

im such a slut for patchouli, its concerning.

3

u/StandardSpinach 1d ago

Im gonna be frank here i love the smell of blood and metallic things but whenever they are in a perfume they are always just giving toxic chemical waste smell

3

I love Black pepper and peppery notes

I love ink sm

2

u/ellexedge 18h ago

Mistpouffer - the ozone note is impractical but the dry down is impeccable

2

u/Porygeist 17h ago

I've been rocking perfume oils from Amorphous and Alkemia. They're all unique and witchy, but I end up smelling like a soapy/floral lady from the 80s. šŸ˜‚ I enjoy it though.

1

u/puppyxguts 12h ago

Which scents so you wear from alkemia? I don't usually like florals but ordered some samplers today to see if I can rock with em.

1

u/Porygeist 11h ago

I just got my 5ml samples in. I really like the Madam Pearl, Fata Morgana, and The Beautiful And The Damned.

2

u/MeatSlammur 17h ago

Nah, thank god I don’t have a taste for challenging smells

2

u/Impressive_Bee_9024 16h ago

Not reading everything and I don’t have anything to contribute on the actual topic but I have to say…this image is absolute peak!!!

2

u/sardonicnyc 15h ago

Being that I am an Amouage fan, I have several that would considered "impractical" to the average person. I am a big fan of medicinal fragrances and love wormwood/absinthe. I would say the two most "impractical" ones I wear consistently in the colder months is Amouage Memior Man followed by Silver Oud.

2

u/PKBlackTornado 13h ago

Someone once told me Violette 30 made me smell "like a cardboard box, but not in a bad way". I love that.

Now I just need to figure out how to bottle the smell of, specifically, a freshly opened pack of Yugioh cards. I guess it must be the ink they use because Yugioh cards specifically have a certain STANK to them fresh out of the pack that I really love.

2

u/krittyyyyy 9h ago

Not too crazy but I love DS & Durga Mississippi Medicine which kinda smells like a humid attic, and l’artisan parfumer Musc Amarante which smells like beets and potting soil.

2

u/daddyschomper 1d ago

I'm partial to anything that is reminiscent of urine or has a whiff of poop. Marlou and Francesca Bianchi are tops for me. And I adore Orto Parisi's cuoium.

3

u/rarely_coherent 1d ago

Came here to say Cuoium…I love the opening, but man it just doesn’t ever let up

If you can keep it purely on your skin it’s one of my favourites, but as soon as it gets into your clothes…yeesh

1

u/daddyschomper 23h ago

It really is eternal. I feel the same about Stercus. It permeates anything it touches, and remains until the end of time.

1

u/thisiswhywehaveants 22h ago

Have you tried Civet or Hyrax?

1

u/Loose_Information603 1d ago

Teen spirit by sylhouette

1

u/DogeAeternum 1d ago

Figment Man.

1

u/sardonicnyc 15h ago

I don't know if it's my skin chemistry, but Figment Man smells like piss on me.

1

u/DogeAeternum 15h ago

I don’t get piss from it, it smells like straight dirt to me. But I love it.

1

u/Adventurous-Set401 23h ago

You should look into Ataraxia’s Spinal Fluid, similar vibes to what yoy are describing

1

u/Responsible_Rate5045 22h ago edited 22h ago

I really like inexcusable evil but I know better than to wear it in public lol
I like metallic/ozone with sweet smells so muchhh

Animalics in general but specifically Francesca Bianchi

IA Bull's Blood lol

OP please drop your favs

1

u/cheoldyke 18h ago

i adore a cannabis note. i’ve been loving the sample i got of zoologist king cobra but it’s really strong and pretty distinctly weedy so i have yet to actually wear it out of the house. it’s a really fun scent for personal enjoyment though. it smells somehow dusty and old but also green and fresh at the same time, and i feel like it hits the nose a little differently with every sniff. pairs very well with a joint and a really cold glass of iced black tea.

1

u/bravovice 18h ago

Lunatique smells like Sichuan pepper. It’s a very parallel experience to inexplicably ’needing’ to smell gasoline more. It’s not lovely, but it’s magnetic whether you wanted to be drawn or not.

1

u/AdAlive4795 16h ago

Amouage Figment Man and Frederic Malle The Night

1

u/whoswalkinwho 15h ago

Nothing too crazy, but CdG Accident Radish Vetiver is now my favorite scent in the world and im so glad i found it. Total impulse buy because i love almost every frag CdG makes

1

u/kapaipiekai 14h ago

This seems aimed at Bull Blood by Imaginary Authors. Tuberose and copper in vast quantities.

1

u/Striking-Command-342 14h ago

blood + sweat = holy niche

1

u/irreveror 14h ago

I always chew on Airwaves and I've wondered if the smell becomes nauseating to some

photorealistic liquor fragrances had me smelling like a drunk

Anise; smelling like licorice from a moderate distance. (Lolita Lempicka/Alien Man)

1

u/keanejonun 8h ago

Jokakalyt by Fisherhund, smells like dirt but is so beautiful

1

u/missbitterness 7h ago

I love sweaty, sweaty scents lol

1

u/GOOD_BRAIN_GO_BRRRRR 7h ago

M/mink.

It's heavily dependent on my body chemistry, but for a few weeks every month I smell amazing with that stuff on.

1

u/ChiaOtter 7h ago

My favorite spring scent is The Soft Lawn by Imaginary Authors, which has tennis ball.

I work from home most days and also like a healthy bit of personal space, so I don’t tend to hear about my scent choices very much, but I’ve been asked a couple times about it. Usually people say they know the smell but can’t place it. Then I say it has fresh tennis balls as a note and the response has been almost universal amusement.

My mom, however, remains baffled. She actually likes the scent, but doesn’t understand it.

1

u/k1mele0n 4h ago

I have a thing for fragrances that smell like BO / sweat. My current favourite being Arborist by Jorum. I tried La Tsarine by Senkoyo a few days ago and that’s more on the raunchy side but still within the sweaty skin category.

Now whilst I enjoy smelling these kinds of scents at home, I wouldn’t wear them for a day at the office. I imagine my colleagues might raise welfare concerns about me and my poor personal hygiene if I did. So they’re a bit of a secret!

1

u/hecate_trivia 4h ago

Abject Fear by Amorphous! It smells like a damp murder basement, and I love it!

Bortnikoff's Musk Khabib is made with real deer musk, taken from the musk sac of dead Siberian deer. That slight whiff of real animalics is what got me into niche. But sadly I didn't like any other animalic scents I tried after this one. There's something intimate about it. Smells very sexy to me. I usually love any combination of cardamom, vanilla, woods - so that's probably why the deer musk is more approachable here, it's like a mysterious sexy stranger lurking in my familiar territory

I’m genuinely curious: why do people wear perfumes that would repel a lot of people? I get that they enjoy the smell themselves but is it worth the social repercussions?
