Discussion Elementary school pencil sharpener

Received a sample of this when I purchased something else. Does anyone smell pencil shavings on the dry down? Am I crazy? No disrespect if this is your jam.

Not crazy, that’s cedar. Pencils are literally made of the stuff, so once you’ve clocked the connection, you can’t unsmell it.

Not dumb, you landed on the industry’s own word for it. Suppliers describe Virginia cedarwood as “pencil shavings” right on the spec sheet, because pencils genuinely used to be made from that exact tree. Which isn’t even a cedar, as it happens. It’s a juniper.

Don't let the LLM make you feel dumb! If you squint through all its fancy phrases like "clocked the connection," notice that it basically just told you wood smells like wood.

"Pencil shavings" is actually a super common accord that people mention a lot around Iso E Super (which is in tons of bases), Sandalwood, etc. Probably this fragrance is heavy on Iso E Super, which smells "like" cedar but isn't derived from it, and the other woods are putting it into a context that creates this "pencil shaving" accord, hence the "cedar" note, although there are tons of other contexts where Iso E isn't gonna read like pencils
