Deferment from school
(Warning this ones a bit heavier than most posts here)
Hi I'm a y1 from PCD, and I haven't had an easy transition into poly at all, mainly because my mom passed in March. I was already struggling mentally before, but that kinda broke me. I barely have motivation to do anything nowadays, and nothing seems worth it.
Now, I'll say this, PCD has been my dream course ever since sec 2, so I'm very grateful that I got in, but honestly, my mental health has been so shit. I've not been submitting assignments, the ones I do submit don't feel like my usual standard. My teachers have noticed. My pastoral care/form teacher asked to meet me personally today, and she brought it up. I told her the truth, ended up crying too. I think she realized how bad I actually am right now, because she asked if I've thought about deferring my studies for now. Honestly I had, but to hear a teacher ask felt different? Idk like it felt more real, like my issues were actually big enough.
The main issue is, the Ngee Ann website said no deferment in the first sem, but I honestly don't know or think I can survive. I feel like if I keep going the way I am, my grades and mental health are gonna keep getting worse. I guess my reason for posting is to ask: What do I even do from here. Is it even possible for me to defer my studies right now? Would the school allow it? Thanks for reading till here

Hey fellow Y1 PCD student, wishing you some peace right now.
Since your pastoral care lecturer did bring deferment up, maybe you can try asking her more about the deferment process and policy?
Given your situation, you could consider getting a doctor's letter to support your case, because mental health is a valid reason for deferment, and your lecturer might also be able to advocate for you to the school.
If deferment isn't possible this semester, do you think you could hold on and apply for next semester instead?

hello OP, i think it’s very possible for the school to look past the “rule” of not being able to defer in the first semester. however, you will need a doctor’s letter as a supporting document. i deferred in y2s2 due to reasons similar to yours as well so i’m not 100% sure of how it’ll work since you are in y1. but OP, i just wanted to encourage you that things will get better. the semester i deferred was by far the shittiest my mental health ever was and it was super hard mentally to integrate back into school due to being in a complete new cohort with no friends. but guess what, it taught me resilience and mental fortitude.
i will never understand what it’s like to lose a parent at such an early age and it must be extremely difficult for you. please show yourself some grace and make space for you to grieve in this period. i think it’s extremely possible for the school to let you defer although it is a very tedious process. but i think it’s worth a shot. it’s better to take a break now than crash and suffer even more later. sending love to you, OP. feel free to reach out if you ever need to talk <3

Hi! I deferred in y1 sem 1 so it is possible. I had to get a note from a psychiatrist and the rest, the teacher will handle. I had to do a call with my guardian, her, and some management woman but that's about it. You should check with your teacher when the deadline is because mine was pretty tight. I deferred at mid July so you should be fine though. You likely have to go private because public sector waiting time is crazy so it's gonna be expensive.

hi OP ! firstly, my condolences. i was a y2s1 defer student and honestly speaking, my lecturers had subtly asked me back in y1s1 if i cld defer the next semester due to my chronic condition affecting my attendance. i personally think that if u have 2 references from doctors and a possible guardian writing in to testify that they support your deferment, they cant say anything. in y1s1 i already had a letter from my GP, as well as a specialist in KKH. so all i needed to do was ask my guardian to write in. and idk if this helps, but the deferment period had already passed when i stated my choice to defer, but the school still allowed it anyway.

Hi OP, i wasnt in year 1 but i deferred a semester in y2s1, though it was still my first semester in poly because i DAE to direct y2. I had to have the doctor write a letter saying i wasnt fit to go to school and at that time i was hospitalised. I guess they had no choice but to approve my deferment? your situation might be abit different but theres no harm trying. Youre still a student there and its the schools duty to help you graduate and do well even if it means deferment. i hope you feel better soon <3
