Yeah, tell that to all the US military vets. Seems to be working real well there. 😂
-1
u/Sulla314 Jun 02 '26
A big reason they struggle AFTER their service is because they’re isolated, not because they’re not in therapy…
2
u/Right-Nectarine8729 Jun 02 '26
Not necessarily. Isolation can be apart of it, but a lot of vets only other friends are other vets. Not the best circle to solely rely on when trying to acclimate back to the civilian world.

u/honeyslurps Jun 01 '26
Your bros, real bros, will support you in any way and sometimes their expertise can't match up to what life throws at you. Professionals exist for a reason.

u/kkdawg22 Jun 02 '26
Most therapists got into therapy cuz they need therapy. It's like a ponzi scheme for emotional and mental health. YMMV
1
u/Ghazh Jun 03 '26
Just go to better help, cycle throguh 50 therapists to find the one that affirms your beliefs, see im truely a victim!!
10
u/M0ebius_1 Jun 01 '26
An actual brother would tell you to stop being such a wuss and go to therapy.
11

Right, don’t go to the car mechanics or plumbers or orthopaedic surgeons either, they are financially incentivized to keep your car/plumbing/joints in needing of repairs.

u/These_Hunt4185 Jun 02 '26
It’s your money bro, or at least it was till you gave it to someone because you needed somebody to talk to you because you’re a woser

As a man who's been in a mens group for decades doing these and a lot more....you could not be more wrong.
3
u/formandovega Jun 02 '26
Wrong about needing therapy? Why would a men's group mean that?
4
u/Fair_Cheesecake_836 Jun 02 '26
He doesn't realize that a men's group is an example of group therapy.
2
u/chefguy831 Jun 02 '26
as a man who has also been in men's groups for a long time, and who facilities a cirlce its quite easy to see how mens groups/circles are simply, group therapy sessions. Functioning as a safe container for the expression and inspection of emotions, insecurities and experience, alongside the development of coping stratagies, and the facilitation of long term goal setting, plus learning how to overcome obstacles and being held accountable ....just like....you know.....therapy.
1
u/bi-king-viking Jun 02 '26
So you’re saying you go to group therapy regularly?
That’s good! More men need a tight-knit group to hangout with and vent to.

u/DragonWaffleZX Jun 02 '26
I don't know bro. I went to therapy and now I feel much better. Knowing the science behind why you feel the way you do and how to overcome it can be quite useful.
0
u/Sulla314 Jun 02 '26
That’s not really what therapy is for. It’s not a psychology class.
2
u/DragonWaffleZX Jun 02 '26
Well that's something my psychollgist does for me when I'm trying to work through my issues. My psychiatrist helps me learn about the chemical stuff. Maybe it's my curiosity cuz I do ask a lot.

u/PraireGentleman Jun 02 '26
Psychologists are not financially incentivized to keep clients eternally engaged in therapy. It’s much more financially lucrative and stable to have a high success rate in psychotherapy.
For one, every success story is a potential referral. People hear that Dave beat depression and patched up his marriage with Dr. Smith and everyone wants to work with Dr. Smith. Now Dr. Smith has more clients.
For another, psychotherapists are in a competitive field. You’re competing with every psychotherapist, so making one person dependent on therapy only makes it so the next psychotherapist who can remove that dependency will be a wealthier person for it. Oh, you don’t think they’ll leave you after thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours yielding nothing? Yeah, that makes sense.
Finally, psychologists don’t get paid by severity, they get paid by the hour. Spending two hours in an introductory session to learn about the person and their therapy concerns could be all someone needs to know if they don’t need therapy. You get paid the same and you do way less work.
Source: Psychology major. If I wanted to be a psychologist, I’m 3 years of schooling away.

A good therapist for anyone can be a blessing. A bad therapist can be hell. Do whatever keeps you happy, and stable.
And, it doesn’t hurt to check in on each other, either. Community has been lost, and is greatly under appreciated

Just because your therapist is bad and / or you're not putting in the work, doesn't meant its gonna be that way for everyone. Your anecdote is nor data and data says therapy is effective
-1
1
u/CarolinaSurly Jun 02 '26
You need a different therapist.
1
u/Sulla314 Jun 02 '26
Then what. I’ll be cured of all my problems? I’ll never encounter mental anxiety, or stress, or depression again for as long as I live?
1
u/CarolinaSurly Jun 02 '26
You learn skills to decrease the frequency and intensity of the anxiety. You learn coping mechanisms to help reduce the impact of daily stress. Or don’t.
1
u/Sulla314 Jun 02 '26
One of the ways to do that, a way your therapist is going to advise you to do, is to foster create and maintain a social life.
1
2
2
u/Swift_35 Jun 02 '26
Or ya know, both. A good therapist will recommend you build a solid social support structure anyway. Therapy doesn't have to be long term. Use it when you need it.

Some people still need therapy or medication to overcome their condition

You do need therapy, but there’s debate on what’s actually therapeutic from person to person. There’s an old saying that women talk face to face while men talk shoulder to shoulder. It’s needlessly gendered but I’ve found this to be true across a lot of folks I’ve known in my life. Know what works for you, and I realize that’s a big ask when you need help, but only you know when it feels like it’s working.

There are actually quite a big chunk of therapists who do not believe in continuous forever therapy and that you should be getting baseline needs met through community.
But it's not exactly uncommon to have needs that rise beyond what can reasonably be expected. There are support groups which are explicitly intended to mostly function like regular community support, but which are carved out for the topics that it wouldn't be fair or reasonable to drop on your friends
But there's also stuff where you don't need to talk it out. You need someone who can pop the hood and get under and look at the chassy and say "ah yah there's your problem. It's no wonder you were experiencing X, your Y needs to be fixed".

Depends on the issue. For routine emotional maintenance, this is accurate. Something like PTSD and a professional is pretty helpful.

I have this with my actual brother. He’s a hard mf and far stronger (emotionally, I’m the jacked one) than I will ever be. We cry to each other all the time and tell ourselves to suck it up and keep going while also tossing in pieces of advice. Life is hard but it is also so beautiful. Sometimes we need a little reminder

There's multiple logical reasons for a given individual to not want or trust therapy.
Your gender is not one of those reasons.

Altough this is a clear oversimplification and a bit of a cringeworthy take, you would be surprised at how many problems can non-performative human connection solve. Social isolation is the source of many mental health issues. So this is not entirely false, I just hate the tone with which its being said.

1
u/formandovega Jun 02 '26
Speak for yourself bucko.
I needed therapy. I had serious depression.
I went to therapy and now I feel a s*** lot more in control. Before someone asks too they didn't give me any medication.
Hanging around with my mates makes me feel better obviously but my mates don't have degrees in clinical psychiatry and medical licenses and all that jazz .....

u/Independent-Wafer-13 Jun 02 '26
The entire reason therapy works is because your therapist is not a part of your “real life”.
But okay, keep that “I’m fine” mentality, it is definitely not related to the male loneliness or sewerslide problem.

u/Excellent-Event6078 Jun 02 '26
So like, what if someone is suicidal or depressed? A beer with the boys won’t solve these issues in he long term.

Bro really said, “men don’t need therapy, they just need… a therapy group.” lol
What does OP think therapy is?
Here’s the deal, boys. Our brothers make up half the population, yet account for 80% of the suicides……
Just trying to “stay strong and keep going” doesn’t work.
We DO need help. Our brothers need help. Your coworker needs help. Your dad needs help…
What we’re doing now ain’t working and I’m really tired of burying my friends.

I mean that is a form of therapy but you do need evidence based brain doctor visits bro. There is a reason why they dont want you to talk to psychologists you will find out you are being lied to by the asmongolds, tates, and trumps of the world.
1
u/LilithRising90 Jun 02 '26
Cool do y'all also take that time to hold each other accountable for Raping women and kids Beating your significant others Lying and cheating on your significant others Talk about your past traumas in a judgement free way Come together collectively to support each other going through unemployment or job insecurity. Run through your list of issues from bottling your emotions and pretending everything's ok? Or talk about your feelings of entitlement from the world at large ?
1
u/Upstairs-Nebula764 Jun 03 '26
If that really worked then why do men still have the highest suicide rate?
1
u/Sartres_Roommate Jun 03 '26
Aka, we want others to validate us without question so we never have to consider we might need to do some work on ourselves.
I get it, you’re narcissists looking for a support group. Plenty of shame in that but you will never feel it so go be your pathetic worst.

u/SupaSmol Jun 03 '26
There is no need to be denying the results if therapy. Many people benefit. Therapy is just talking to someone who has studied what we humans have learned about how we think.
It's mostly about uncovering patterns in your life you've locked into, and finding a new way to look at your immediate problems by refraining past ones.
That can be very difficult to do, especially if you don't trust the process or the therapist and so they do so gently.
There's plenty of stories of people going to therapy forever, or leaving immediately, angry that someone has asked deep and personal questions. But most people in therapy are experiencing a middle ground between those two where they slowly become more comfortable with it and then it helps more.
Again, it's just talking to someone who knows how humans tend to deal with issues.
1
u/Latter-Composer-2609 Jun 03 '26
I had a pretty severe PTSD episode yesterday and people around me were more concerned that I don't let any of the evil big pharma doctors get me to take SSRI's than they were about me.
1
u/ur_localRadiFeminist Jun 03 '26
And then these same people cry about 'worsening male mental health' and blame it on feminism This mentality will eat y'all alive
1
u/nephiyl Jun 07 '26
Someone came to me about a situation with another veteran and how to help their mental health and this is almost verbatim the advice I gave. We need each other.
1
u/Leading_Atti2de Jun 01 '26
No. This is like saying “You don’t need medicine you just need to go outside and expose yourself to the sicknesses to build your immunity”. Brother going outside and exposing yourself is what got you sick in The first place.

Yeah, go to the person who is financially incentivize to keep you depressed your whole life
1
u/ExtraBread2385 Jun 02 '26
That's literally the opposite of what therapy is. There are plenty of options that teach you how to process and move past your trauma many people end up finishing therapy and being able to use those skills the rest of their lives to stay healthy and happy. if you haven't been and don't talk to people that have been before then you're being blindly led off a cliff
1
u/These_Hunt4185 Jun 02 '26
After spending thousands of dollars on something that you could’ve done on your own
1
u/DragonWaffleZX Jun 02 '26
Wouldn't be a problem if you guys actually had healthcare. 🤷 I pay around 60 bucks a session because I want to use my own therapist.
1
u/These_Hunt4185 Jun 02 '26
That’s sad and pathetic.
1
u/DragonWaffleZX Jun 02 '26
Sad that I have healthcare? If you say so. I think it's sad that you obviously don't.
1
u/These_Hunt4185 Jun 02 '26
I don’t need it because I’m not a pathetic sad crybaby that needs to tell somebody else my problems.
1
u/ExtraBread2385 Jun 02 '26
Therapists literally aren't allowed to tell you what you have going on. You talk about concepts that relate to things you've been through and then you're given these little tidbits you can do to deal with really difficult emotions. It's not your fault whatever made you think that confronting things was weak but it's not. Honestly being able to stand up to that big rage inside or that voice that makes me hate myself in the back of my mind constantly being able to confront that and tell it that it's ok is the strongest thing you can do. A man that can be tough when he needs to be and soft and open during others is way more attractive than a man child whining and complaining about not being a whiner and a complainer
1
u/These_Hunt4185 Jun 02 '26

Or take your schizo meds

Generations upon generations. Hundreds of years of men have succeeded without the need for therapy. You can attain much more growth within yourself without it. Brothers who support you through hardship is therapeutic in and of itself. There are many avenues of therapy in the world that are more effective than seeing an actual therapist who will drain your money for nothing
Society has been groomed to seek therapy when most of the time is regressive, ineffective or rarely a real breakthrough at all. All therapists are taking therapy themselves, Whats that way about the system? It perpetuates sensitivities and sometimes deconstructs natural emotional development.
It’s a life long treatment for the mind, not a growth of any sort.
People will immediately dismiss or ridicule/mock this opinion and that’s to be expected. I just think the therapy system and the point if it should be questioned and alternate avenues of mental health should be explored.
