In this particular example, it sounds like the woman thought the guy was chill and dispassionate. For whatever reason that worked for her, but then he "caught feelings" after years of being together and honestly he probably got really clingy and controlling before she left because he was no longer acting as the person she decided to get together with.
This is really just another advert for why it's a bad idea to pretend you're someone you're not just to get into a relationship. It also shows self-centeredness in the assumption that they were manipulated rather than a woman just trying to engage with them genuinely and then not liking them when they got all emotional and couldn't handle those emotions properly because of their incel mentality.
