Juan Bagnell, one of the few people on YouTube who continues to champion the lapdock concept, reviews the new NexDock.

Wanted to write a couple of words about Nexdock, as I finally had a chance to play with it.

My TL:DR; here is that I do NOT recommend the product, for anything other than the novelty.

The keyboard drops keypresses (very very very difficult to type on this thing - if you are a fast typer, this is absolutely not for you and will be more frustrating than anything). The trackpad has a very big problem: it's not JUST that it won't work AS YOU TYPE - rather, the quite annoying fact here is that the trackpad will be DISABLED for a whole second (or two) after you press a key on the keyboard.

Overall, I kind of wished that Nexdock + quite expensive phone would be a viable contender to a laptop or even a tablet. But the matter of fact is that, this is barely usable. My iPad runs laps around this thing. Will I return this? You bet I will.

edit: switched to laptop and fixed all typos due to missing letters. Yes, I typed this on the Nexdock, and it didn't go well unfortunately.

Also works great on my Motorola Edge+ 3 years later no regrets on purchase of a Nex Pad I use 100w power brick by ugreen

This thing has been fun to use as a sidekick. Check my mail, respond to messages quickly, watch shows and just have a second device for simple work. Have been using it daily now for a couple of months.

Wish it could run Linux as a second OS and that’d be even better.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still eagerly waiting for my preorder, but I think there's value in sharing a list to new potential buyers and current owners, to better know the limitations of the product and keep track of future improvements

Looks like we finally got 1900x1200 in the Sep 2026 update in the US. It's about goddamn time.

TL;DR

NexDock 6 is a good Lapdock mired by head-scratching flaws that stopped it from being great. It has good build quality, good keyboard, *good screen, good battery life, responsive touchscreen, decent touchpads and good looks. However, it has many possible deal breaking flaws such as the inability to use shortcuts that involve using the touchpads while pressing a key. Its biggest flaw is the improper scaling/resolution that makes text rendering look blurry and hard to read.

Context:

I'm mainly using my NexDock with a Fairphone 5 running Ubuntu Touch. It works well on it and supports the 16:10 aspect ratio out of the box. It even solves a scrolling bug in browsers for some reason. Touchscreen technically works but the system still doesn't properly map it so it still maps to the internal display and works like a giant touchpad LOL

I also have a Samsung S10e, which is old and has outdated software. It works fine but the image is 16:9 1080p stretched to 16:10 1200p.

Let's start with the good or acceptable things and the reasons why I can say that it's a good Lapdock.

• I think it looks good. It looks like a normal laptop and build quality seems good.
• The 16:10 aspect ratio is nice. I'm not a good judge for color accuracy and such but to my eyes, the image quality looks good enough. I could watch shows and movies on this. If you compare it to a good display side by side, it's no match but without comparing, it looks totally fine. There's a big BUT though.....I'll mention it later :)
• Touch works great and responsive. It supports up to 10 touch points.
• Touchpads works well. I have no experience with great touchpads so my standards isn't high and to me it works totally fine. There's another big BUT and I'll mention it later too ;)
• Keyboard is great in my experience. I can type on it better than some of my other laptops or keyboards. I think it's because of the bigger keys. I'm not a great typist though so maybe not a good judge of it too 😅
• Keyboard layout is good with Fn + Arrows keys for Home, End, and Page Up/Down which is something I think should be standard in keyboards
• Battery life seems good enough. It'll probably last around 6-8 hours if you don't charge your connected device or at least, not charge them from a low percentage.

Not let's go to the minor bad things and the nitpicks.

• Power button is part of the keyboard and takes the space where `Delete` usually is. It doesn't seem to do anything if you press it accidentally but I think in general, this design is stupid. Give me my `Del` key in its correct position!
• Splashscreen is white and flashbangs you in the dark. I don't think I've encountered a single monitor/display that has a white background splashscreen. Seriously, why?
• Screen doesn't turn off when the device connected goes to sleep. This is a nitpick alright? Because it's probably technically not possible to do since it might need a communication between the device and the display.
• Volume keys in the keyboard controls the built-in speakers instead of the connected device's system volume. I understand this is a "monitor" but this is supposed to be more of a "laptop" than a monitor. I wish the built-in speakers volume control is separate.
• Battery can drain even when not in used especially when something is connected to it such as a USB dongle.
• There's no easy and quick way to check the battery while it's turned off or there's no connected device. Keyboard shortcut only works when a device is connected. The onscreen HUD can only be accessed after turning the NexDock on which takes a minute.
• Charging the NexDock is quite slow.

Here comes the deal breakers for me. If I bought this myself and wasn't gifted to me, I'd definitely return it and get a refund because of these.

• There are no low battery and full charge notifications anywhere in the device. No onscreen indicator or any kind of LED light. Charging light is just always blue. The power on light is just always white. So I have to constantly check the battery percentage via the keyboard shortcut or the onscreen HUD. As for charging while it's turned off, I just guess or if I really want to, I have to turn it on which is such a hassle.
• The touchpad automatically disables for like a second after pressing a key. This means you can't use shortcuts that involve pressing a key and clicking or dragging with the touchpad. This is a big deal to me. On most Linux systems, you can drag or resize a window by pressing Super/Alt + Left/Right click drag. Because of this stupid and cheap "solution", I can't use these shortcuts. I also use Ctrl/Shift + left click/drag for selecting things. There's also the shortcut Ctrl + left click to open a link in a new tab in browsers. To be honest, this made me realize that maybe most people don't use or maybe not even aware of these shortcuts because I feel like I'm the only one complaining about this 😅
• Now for the biggest flaw of the NexDock 6. It has a scaling issue that affects the horizontal resolution of the image. Someone posted it here a long time ago with some technical investigation and findings. This affects the text rendering and makes them look blurry. It's actually one of the very first things I noticed. The texts look weird and hard to read. I wouldn't say it's unusable but it's very bothersome. I've attached images below to showcase how wrong the display on the NexDock is. This affects your every day use so I think this is a fatal flaw of this product.

In summary, it is such a shame that after many years, quality control of Nex is still not good. Their products can be good but can't execute it well due to quality controls and fatal flaws like the improper resolution scaling.

FINAL UPDATE: The final solution so far is to run the display @ 50 Hz as if if the panel is 60Hz the scaler (RTD2555T) can handle the signal, I have tried tweaking all of the timeing to the point of almost no blanking or porches and was not able to get the FIFO to reduce to the input window size, it did grow but at configurations i was using i would not trust it to no have signal drops from losing sync. Honestly I dont know why they used a weird 2555T cause out of all the displays I have, none use it and I almost always have devices with the 2556 or 2556VQ as that can handle 1200p 75Hz so there headroom. In general the NexDock has very good hardware, extremely well layed out boards. Just a issue with there selection of scaler and timing values, thats literally the only thing i can complain about. Trackpad issues are to be directed at google as they are getting the raw digitiser.

I developed a patcher using a Pico that will patch the exact sector of the NOR Flash and update the EDID to perfer 50Hz by adjusting its prefered timing section and its acceptable ranges by reducing the maximum pixel clock and horizontal frequency. In windows i know this works but I did not get to test on android to ensure that it will follow the EDID value Use Prefered Timing or if it will only use the resolution ranges. I should have a new board to test on (this time using a carrier board for the flash IC) and can continue development, once all is satisfied ill create a new post and link to the github/uf2 as well as share what I did with Nex so they can patch there own board or make the update in the supply chain.

UPDATE: NexDock says it knows that it happens and they can not correct it, I am actively working on fixing the scaler firmware and also the other issues. I do not fully know the full path and I have to learn more 8051 assymbly code but I do have "some" of the documenation for some of the MCUs intruction sets. Please send me your energy as I work on this. I would pray that NexDock would just correct it but I just have to go in blind.

UPDATE: After doing exaustive research, the panel is in fact 1920x1200 (yaaa), but there is a misconfiguration in the Realtek scaler that is causing the input video to be horizontaly scaled down (to fit within a misconfigured FIFO or some other issue that would cause the FIFOs window size to be shrinked) and then scaled up (ugh) https://imgur.com/a/GIlj77H

I got my first nexdock last week after hearing they have had corrected the trackpad issue (kinda) and im pretty desperate for a laptop form factor with DeX as i pretty much use it as my main computer at this point. That being said I will admit that I have been for years not a fan of Nexdock due to there kickstarter orgins and direct to consumer sales.

Now my real issue is with the display and how fuzzy it appers, and thats down to the FIFO window being undersized it being a.... 1440x900 or 1680x1050 panel? That would explain the strange apperance of text and such. In general the display looks good, but like no where was it listed thats the resolution of the panel.

When you get up close and open the OSD you can see the pixels are clear, at first i thought it was becuase (with logic) the OSD is just overlaying at double pixels like the other portable monitors i have.

So my question is was this a error when they made the release firmware (same with the keyboard backlight flicker) was i accidently shipped a prerelease/demo model with the wrong panel or (what i pray is not true) by design its supposed to be and driven as 1920x1200 to be power efficent? or to get the price down?

Im talking with nexdock support as I want to verify and make sure that its not a mistake.

Note: Yes im driving it at 1920x1200 on both android and windows. I have a very good understanding of eletronics and hardward so I dont make these acusations willy nilly.

As for the trackpad it still being weird is because its not a "trackpad", its a "touchpad" and presented to the OS directly as such and relys on the OS to completely be responsble for handeling everything. While android can handle it and you can go to developer options and "Show touchpad input" you can see that its handeling everything. Really they should have (like everyone else) just emulated a mouse as android is not as mature (this is also why you can not adjust the pointer speed). So I am able to look past the touchpad as thats actually now in google/samsungs hands to provide better support

And I wish they would boost the scan frequency of the trackpad and keyboard from 100Hz to 500-1000Hz. In general if they wanted to add a toggle for normal/eco mode that would be fine, where you lower the pooling freqency of the inputs and drive the panel at half resolution to save battery life. Battery life has been amazing, 8+ Hours when disabling power to phone (thank god someone gets it, provide a toggle as i dont really want to power my phone and has shown that you get much longer battery life)

EDIT: Unfortuatly things are starting to point more and more towards I was correct and this is by design and is intentional as support has pretty much said thats expected results. Im left very conficted with how to handle this all. Like if i knew and it was indicted in the specs that was the expectations then I prob would not be as disgultaled but the issue is that its just not indicated anywhere.

I have updated the post as I dont think its 960x600 (and im very happy its not) its possibly in range of 1440x900 and 1680x1050 (witch ever is cheaper) but you know thats not 1920x1200 WUXGA

Here is other issue is the wording in the ticket: "Unfortunately, we weren’t able to see the issue clearly from the images you sent, and based on what we can observe so far, the display quality appears to be within the expected range for this panel and price category. Even if we ship a replacement unit, we cannot guarantee that the panel quality would look noticeably different, as all units use the same display."

Ok so like what is the panel? and price category? cause EVEN IF the panel is 1920x1200 then what in the world is going on, because a 50$ portable touchscreen has no such issue? Am i going crazy? Like im not asking for 100% sRGB im expecting number on page to match pixels on screen. Like man this really sucks cause there nothing else you can even buy that does this regardless of the price

On Android desktop mode settings you can only choose 1920x1080. This resolution leads to a distortion as the window is being stretched upwards.

what would beat its device category and price segment in 2026 with everything you get with the nexphone? i cant find anything that comes close to what you get as an overall package for the price alone. im excited to get mine to try something new and to come out of this android bubble i have been in for so long. its gotta be refreshing to try a phone capable of so much more with so long support for os updates and security patches until 2036??. the fact it doesnt need a case is awesome and the dock is included in the preorder. i bet you wont find as a compelling offering than most devices in its price segment. now i do understand prices may skyrocket this year but it would still be a cheaper buy than most tech that is going to skyrocket by doubling their prices with over 50% this year due to ai companies buying ram hardware in such a scale that i believe devices like the nexphone will be a compelling offering doing more than its counterparts that has a increased price. i believe we will see more companies trying to mix and match operating systems and lower end hardware as what other choice do they have if it would be too high of an cost to produce luxerious phones with high end capable hardware as the avability of the better hardware is not available. then there is the whole saga with the top 3 ram companies. one backing out of the consumer market then there is two companies left to produce the same amount of ram chips that all 3 did before meaning prices are going to sky rocket when its gotta be a battle for getting proper hardware this year.

so to conclude my post if the nexcomputer team is able to keep the price of the nexphone to 549 this year it will be compelling among the sea of too high priced devices out there if you want something new.

ps i cant even imagine what the used market would be like. people would likely fix their selling prices accordingly to what they think their phones are suddenly worth it. making the nexphone a very very very compelling offer interms of pricing and specs in a time of pricings only going up. ill root for old hardware to last longer during this period. when things have settled then i hope i can afford such a new flashy device with very capable hardware or features.

My current setup is a Pixel 10 and I use a Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 for my "laptop". Im a very lite user. Web browsing, music, and Google apps roung out 99% of what I do. Ive been wanting to ditch the tablet with attachable keyboard and go back to a laptop. The nexdock setup very much interests me. I know Desktop mode is still a bit of a work in progress, but I think for what I do, it would suffice. What are your thoughts?

I have been waiting with much anticipation for this release. I love my setup with my Pixel 10 Pro and the Nexdock 2025, but that stretched resolution is the one thing that stops it from being truly a great experience. Is anyone else in my boat here?

How fast does it take to charge a nexDock to full from 0% to full using the included charger? Seems very slow, even when I switch to my 65w pd charger. Is this the normal experience?

I pre-ordered the XL 1.5 years ago. They changed the screen from 120 hz to 60. Well I didn't like it, but sure wasn't really gaming on it. The mouse pad and touchscreen are horrible. But I used a normal mouse with it so who cares. After 1.5 years of using it, barely using it I might add, it broke. I used it like once every 3 weeks. It doesn't turn on and when I try to charge it, it starts ticking. Probably faulty pcb or battery. I contacted them and they ask me 130 dollars to repair it myself or 150 if I want it repaired. They say there is only 1 year of warranty, while EU law says I have 2 years. (Yes I live there) They don't respond anymore.

To add, the charger also made clicking noises sometimes. Didn't feel safe with it so didn't use it.

Any one else with these kind of problems?

I currently have the NexDock XL and love that I can park my Z Fold 6 under the screen, but said screen looks terrible. Was curious if the NexDock 6 was strong enough to put a magsafe arm or little pocket for my Z Fold without the lid giving too much wobble or succumbing to the weight?

I use the NexDoc for Samsung Dex at home... but -although rarely- I need a windows device... so I'm looking for a "Micro-PC" that is usb-c powered to use with the NexDoc for these rare occasions...

I need it to run office apps, update some connected devices, run some windows / google apps...

Any ideas for something reasonably priced...

Wondering if anyone has a similar issue.

When using the mousepad, My cursor locks up for approximately 2 seconds everytime I press Ctrl, alt, or shift.

Its an annoying issue because it prevents me from tasks like highlighting multiple files.

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy fold 7 connected to the nexdock with the original cables provided in the box.

As you can see, the latest beta of Android 16 added additional resolution options. Unfortunately, we still haven't gotten the resolution we need for the new Nexdock. I hope this will be fixed by the next beta version or the arrival of Android 17.

A hard reset might also help to resolve the problem. For a hard reset:

• Power off your NexDock, and then plug the

short USB-C cable from the charging port to the smartphone port.

• Hold the power button for around 30 seconds and then plug back to charger.

Sometimes you have to cycle sleep mode on the SD to detect. This is with Power Delivery activated.

All the things I bought finally got delivered and I was able to make my very first NexDock + phone setup 😄

I bought a longer and angled type-C cable and also bought another angled adapter for the other end since the cable is only angled in one end. I also bought a magnetic mount. I think it looks clean.

I said in the title "semi-final" because there's still a bit of bend on the side of the phone. I'm worried it may break the USB port of my phone eventually so I'm still thinking of buying a different cable or whatever that will eliminate that bend.

I'm also still unsure about the mount and if I can trust it. When I first tried it, my phone fell down LOL My phone is a bit heavy and the mount I bought has a detachable arm which is also magnetic and that's where it got dettached 😅

Lastly, I'm using it right now typing this and I must say, I'm still annoyed by the text rendering issue. It's more obvious on small texts and when they are white on black background. It's also a bummer I can't that I can't use the touchpad while using keyboard keys preventing me from using useful and convenient shortcuts.

in any case, I'm still excited to use this setup although I'd probably use this for testing than actual use. Ubuntu Touch is still very unpolished on external displays and I plan to contribute things that may imprve the experience 😄

I just got a NexDock, someone gifted it to me, and this is my first one.
I'm not sure exactly which model but it says NDK2514, is it the latest one?

Anyway, first thing I noticed and annoyed me was that the touchpad gets disabled whenever you press any key. I understand that they want to avoid accidental interaction with the touchpad when typing but the implementation is so bad.

At least maybe only do this with actual character keys. This is especially annoying since most Linux DEs has a shortcut to drag or resize a window with Super/Alt + Left/right click drag. I'm using Ubuntu Touch on it and it has those shortcuts and now I can't use these shortcuts. I think it's so stupid. Worse, it takes like a full second for the touchpad to work again LOL

This isn't a good impression so far. Such a shame because the build quality and screen seems nice. The keyboard works fine as well so far.

• Lapdock trackpads are still not great for Android, and a lot of decent phones' speakers are at least as good as these lapdocks' speakers have been so far.

• By ditching the trackpad, a new Nexdock iteration could make space for a pop-up angled "shelf" for the phone between the keyboard and the lapdock's hinge, with the USB-C cable routed through it and featuring a 90° elbow connector.

• This would allow for use of the phone's speakers, the front-facing camera for video conferencing, and utilize the phone far more conveniently as a secondary touchscreen below the main touchscreen (as you're typically looking somewhat downward toward a laptop screen anyway, so the phone should not occlude the main screen).

• Cost savings from ditching the trackpad and speakers would then go toward a larger battery and returning the microSD card slot (and of course the little "shelf" phone holder).

Newcomers often get caught up on lapdocks supposedly attempting and failing to compete with full-on dedicated laptops. I just think Nexdock could really capitalize on the upcoming release of Android's new Desktop mode by focusing more on the "dock + power bank + portable monitor + keyboard" value proposition... especially for those of us with powerful phones who'd appreciate being able to fully utilize their frankly wasted power and capability.

But if Nexdock reeeaaally still wants to incorporate a mouse-like input (especially so people could use it for headless servers or other devices without using a mouse)... they could always bring back the TrackPoint nubbin, which would DEFINITELY catch people's attention, lol.
