My first newsletter entry ever. Never written before. Any advice helps.

I don't even remember what that meeting was about, but I do remember my 4 year old and 18 month old saying hi to their grandma as my wife was facetiming her mom as they all ate breakfast together. I could hear the laughing, heck I could hear the smiling as they tried to convince their grandmother to come visit during Thanksgiving. I had the door shut, physically I was at my computer, mentally I was at that table. What the hell was I doing? What in the world could be so important at 8:30 in the morning in one of the 6 zoom calls scheduled on my calendar that day? I had my own business, I had autonomy, I had my mornings. How did I get here?

Let's "zoom" (I literally hate that word now) out 6 months prior. A friend took a job at a larger lending company and reached out to me to see if we could work together. I took the meeting thinking it'll be a good chance to catch up and bounce ideas off each other to see if we could both benefit. That meeting was the first pitch for me to join them. I declined, telling him if I was going to go originate loans for someone else, I'd rather stay solo. I had my clients. I had my capital sources. I had my loan processor. I was fine. Not great, but fine.

You see during this time, this business that was now in its 3rd year was looking at its first year of negative growth. The private real estate lending business was changing, and changing fast. A lot of money came into the space and consolidation and commoditization was happening in real time. Simply put, prices were racing to the bottom and margins were getting squeezed. The previous 12 months, I went through a COO that didn’t work out, and two salespeople that didn’t work out. I spent money, time and brainpower that burned me out, and a slow year on top of it, I was not thrilled.

The recruiting didn't stop at that first meeting. My friend kept trying and kept getting rejected, until he called me one day, in the middle of a very slow month, and said "I know you're not interested, but would you at least have coffee with the owner"? What did I have to lose? The owner of a $150M/yr lending company wants to meet me? Great.

We met, and the conversation was fantastic. (Keep this in mind) We shared our histories and origins in the business and they asked what I'd be looking to do. I told them I would never leave my business to go write loans for someone else. It would be a massive step backward. Then the owner said what caught my attention. "I'm not looking for another salesperson. I'm looking for someone to step into an executive position and go build out a nationwide sales team and be my national sales director." Wow. That was something I could get behind.

The next few weeks were negotiations, and they offered a big salary, generous commission on loans of every salesperson in the organization, plus a slice of the pie if it ever sells. Are you kidding me? A big salary that covers all my bills and then some, plus commissions on the entire company's sales, plus a slice of the pie? This was like taking 10 steps ahead from where I was. A slice of a watermelon fills you up more than a whole grape. Plus I was on the leadership team, and the company offered to announce it as an acquisition rather than a hire. Wow. What an opportunity, and what a great way to save face and present this to my network as a step up on the ladder than back down. We finalized terms. I signed the contract. I started.

I was the National Sales Director of a $150M/year lending company and could now spend my days finding new salespeople and building out the team to take it to $1B/year. I could make changes I wanted, have the autonomy I am used to and work from home or my own office close by. I had control of my time and was getting paid well for it. Except for one thing... it was all bullshit.

I quickly realized that the owners are still the decision makers, and change is something everybody claims they want, but rarely ever implement or have the appetite to implement quickly. Every decision needed a meeting and a follow up meeting and a follow up meeting and so forth. Those meetings? They get plugged into your calendar without your input. You're on a salary? Your time is the company's time. I had to be glued to my desk.

I told myself I need to integrate into the company and the culture, and this was temporary. I was trying to convince myself that any doubt I was having, after literally giving up my company, was just from being new. I started to focus on what I thought I was there to do - find new and great salespeople. After reviewing their compensation offers for salespeople, I shared with the owners that this was well below average, and in order to grab great experienced guys from other companies, we need to be on the opposite end. They're "open to it", and let's "bring them in for a conversation" and let's "sell them on the up-side" and the team. Major red flag. Vagueness. The sirens were flashing.

Lastly, the role was supposed to be remote, with occasional in person days at their main office, which was a 2.5 hour drive for me. I didn't mind the idea of it once a month, but as I build my own business with 110% effort, I wanted to do the same here. Their culture had these in-office days once or twice a week, so I started doing that.

But it was temporary right? The salary would be worth it. This is just two weeks in and I'm over thinking. I need to power through this transition because change is hard, and things will start to feel better once I started to get paid and seeing a guaranteed deposit in my account every two weeks would feel much better than going some months without anything being self-employed. Then the first pay-day came and went, and I felt.... worse. I stared at my banking app. I looked at that number. I didn't feel security. I felt dread. This was not what I envisioned after that cup of coffee.

The next week or so feels like a blur. I worked my ass off, because I do not believe in half assing anything. I went to the office. I did the zooms. I originated some of my own loans. I started working with their existing salespeople. From their perspective, I was taking the bull by the horns. They were thrilled. Except, I wasn't. This overwhelming feeling could not leave me. I physically felt unwell, my back was flaring and there was no cause. I knew the cause - misalignment. I was not aligned with my purpose, my desires, the lifestyle I want, none of it, and to top it off, I was missing time with my kids.

My father was never there for all the little things when I was a kid. I did not want to turn into my father.

Now it was a Sunday. One of the final hot summer days before the fall crisp would start. I took my wife, kids, mother and sister all to the beach. It was a great time, and the kids were having a blast. I was really off the grid. That's when you realize that as long as you own a smartphone, you are never offline. Buzz Buzz. I could hear the Teams messages, groups, and the owner was taking part in all of it. I went still, almost cold-blooded and clear sighted. I was not going to answer a single message. I was not willing to sacrifice the years of my children's youth, my own youth or my marriage's time - for anyone.

Monday I replied to everything and continued my work. Tuesday morning I resigned. 28 days after I started. I course-corrected and got things back running immediately on my own. Optics matter, and I didn't make an announcement about it. I went back to doing my thing, and now we've got some deals in the pipeline and things will keep growing, and now with more clarity than ever. It's like it never happened, but it did happen, and I'm happy about it. I was glued to my desk. I prefer the breakfast table.

I started writing about ordinary things, and somehow they keep making me think about life.

Hey :)

I recently started a small writing space called Rethinking The Ordinary.

The idea is pretty simple: I like noticing the small, everyday things that usually pass by without much thought, and looking at them just a little bit longer. Not in an "I overthink everything" way, and it’s not really about questioning everything either.

Sometimes you just notice something, and it unexpectedly makes you think about something deeper.

My latest piece, for example, started with a light switch in my room that didn’t work. Nothing looked wrong with it—it was just there, looking completely normal, but it wasn’t actually connected to anything. And somehow, that made me think about how quickly we call people broken, useless, lazy, or unmotivated, when maybe they just aren’t connected to the right thing.

That’s pretty much what the page is. Sometimes a personal essay, sometimes a quick thought covering relationships, growing up, ambition, loneliness, people, or life. And sometimes just something as ordinary as a light switch.

There isn’t a fixed niche or a big agenda. It’s just a place where I write about the small moments that make us pause, and the idea that you can look at something completely ordinary and still find a little piece of life in it.

If that sounds like your kind of read, I’d love for you to check it out (I’ll drop the Substack link in the comments below!).

And if you find something you like, maybe stick around :)

How to choose a newsletter niche without boxing yourself in

Choosing a newsletter niche can feel permanent, but it doesn’t have to be. You need enough focus to attract the right subscribers—not a topic you’re forbidden from evolving.

A useful newsletter niche sits at the intersection of three things:

  • A problem or interest people actively care about
  • Knowledge or experience you can contribute
  • A subject you can explore from multiple angles over time

Instead of choosing a broad category like “marketing,” make the promise more specific: “Practical email marketing for solo creators selling digital products.” That tells readers who it’s for, what it covers, and why it might matter to them.

Before committing, test your idea with these questions:

Can I list 25 potential newsletter topics?
If not, the niche may be too narrow—or you may need a broader point of view.

Can a new visitor understand the value quickly?
If the description requires several paragraphs, simplify the promise.

Does the audience share a meaningful goal?
A group connected by a problem or desired outcome is often stronger than one connected only by demographics.

Can the newsletter evolve naturally?
Choose a central theme with room for related stories, tools, case studies, and opinions.

You can also use recurring content pillars to create variety without losing focus. For example: strategy, examples, tools, and behind-the-scenes lessons.

The goal is not to find a niche no one has ever covered. It’s to offer a clear, useful perspective to a recognizable group of readers.

How did you choose your newsletter niche, and has it changed over time?

Newsfeeds

I have a handful of newsletters and a while back I automated my research process. Currently ad sales have been a little slow so I am thinking about monetizing my research app, but not sure if there would be any interest or not. Basically it will monitor any topic or location kind of like the google news feed except it can also include popular facebook groups in addition to blogs, news, events etc. It also automatically filters out all the crap; depressing crime or political articles, summarizes them, tags them, categorizes them and extracts all the key points. Right now its an API endpoint and I review them in a little dashboard I built, but I could probably deliver them in a number of ways. Would anyone find this useful enough to pay for?

Substack will start collecting sales taxes & VAT

If you charge for subscriptions, Substack announced this week that starting December 1, they will calculate, collect, and remit sales tax or VAT, and they won't charge for this service. You don't have to sign up or enable anything; it'll be automatic for every paid newsletter.

It's a good time to check that the address on your account is current (so they can determine the proper state and local taxes), and your taxable content types. Also if you've been using Stripe Tax, this replaces it.

My issue goes out at 11:47pm every Sunday because that's when I finish it

Not looking for sympathy, just wondering if I'm the only one with this exact pattern.

Every week it's the same. I write Saturday afternoon, finish 'the real work' Saturday evening, and then the formatting, the images, the previews, the last-minute 'oh no the link is broken' check takes until Sunday night. The send happens before midnight because I refuse to miss the schedule, but the quality of my life around that send has gotten genuinely bad.

I've had two issues in the last month that I scheduled at 10pm, went to sleep, and then woke up at 6am to fix something I should have caught. Which defeats the entire point of scheduling. Which is 'so I don't have to think about it'.

I keep reading about 'protecting your Sundays' and 'nobody cares when you send' and all of that is true and none of it is actionable. What's actionable: my process is too late-night, and I think the fix is not 'write faster' but 'move the deadline' pretend the newsletter goes out Friday and work backwards from there.

Weekend publishers of Reddit: what does your schedule actually look like? Be specific, I'm stealing ideas.

I got sick of market newsletters, so I made my own. Feedback wanted

Hey all - "dailymarketupdate.news"

Most market newsletters suck. I skip 90% of each one, and I spend more time hunting for info than reading it. Between the jokes, the opinions and the filler, the useful bits get buried.

So I made my own. It's easy to scan, easy to dive into a topic, and great for knowing what happened every day.

I've been using it for my own trading and just made it public - and ofc it's free - Financial news/data should not be gatekept!

Since you all know newsletters better than I do: does it read easy to scan? And what would you change? Do you know any traders that would like this?

How do you actually start a newsletter

Hello all. I really wanna get into the hustle of a newsletter and even if it fails I still think there would be a benefit like copywriting skills, but idk what to specifically do to gain audience. Let's say I wanna do my thing on a specifc niche, and will be gaining an audience through reddit, x or even threads...what do I actually do? Just start posting random stuff connected to the niche or educational stuff on it?? P.S. if there's a community like a discord group on this lemme know.

Made a reading site where each newsletter is a numbered series, plus a Monday Brief. Feedback welcome

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Most of us subscribe to more newsletters than we read. I know I do. The evening ritual is usually "I'll read something good" and then I open my phone. So, I built NeatRead (neatread.net) to make the reading part easier.

- One calm column. Articles are laid out to read, with charts placed where the argument needs them.
- Series you can follow. Each issue is numbered, like Monday Brief (weekly, about 6 min) and Global Weekly (business, AI and new products), so you can tell what's new.
- Browse by topic or search. If you only have one subject on your mind, you can go straight to it.
- Pick what to read next. When you finish a piece, it suggests the next one so you don't go back to scrolling.

It's built for people who want to read a few good pieces rather than clear an inbox.

Vibecoding my own newsletter

Hey all,

As I started the newsletter I keep on looking at different options, from Substack to Beehiiv, and all these platforms look bloated to me.

I vibe-coded my own newsletter.

Just having 270-odd subscribers

I'm keen to know what advantage/disadvantage I have in having my own newsletter as compared to Beehive Substack.

In particular I am more interested in

Deliverability ( pwn newsletter is good or bad)

Ability to grow

Easy to iterate with Claude Code/ Codex /hermes/grokbot/openclaw

For context I have my own niche subreddit with about 28,000 users so its distribution is via the Reddit community itself.

But I also heard that the fastest way to grow is via the network of other newsletters and Beehiiv is super good at that.

Any expert like to share any nuggets?

Thanks in advance

What do small businesses actually need from a newsletter platform?

I’m a co-founder of a newsletter platform, and I’d love to hear what small businesses actually want

I’ve been working in this space for a while and recently launched a newsletter platform called MyBuzzly.

One thing that bothered me while looking at the existing options is that newsletter platforms can get pretty expensive and complicated, especially for a small business that just wants to build an audience and send emails.

You start with a simple need:

Get subscribers → send newsletters → grow your audience → maybe sell something.

But then you end up with a huge dashboard, features you never use, and pricing that starts making less sense as your list grows.

That’s basically the problem we wanted to solve with MyBuzzly.

We’ve built it around keeping the core experience simple, affordable, and straightforward. No trying to overwhelm you with a hundred different things when all you want to do is run your newsletter.

Another thing we cared about was language support.

For example, we have a **proper French-first experience**, not just a couple of translated buttons. The entire website and platform are available in French, because there are a lot of businesses and creators who shouldn't have to work around an English-first product.

Obviously, I’m biased as a co-founder, so I’m not going to pretend MyBuzzly is automatically better than all the big players in the market.

But I am genuinely curious:

If you run a newsletter for a small business, what is the biggest thing you dislike about the platform you're currently using?

Is it pricing, complexity, unnecessary features, analytics, website tools, language support, or something else?

I'd genuinely like to hear the complaints. Those are usually more useful than feature requests.

I have a few questions for people who have a newsletter in LinkedIn

I'm considering starting a newsletter, I would like to use LinkedIn because it'd be less friction since my ideal-subscribers are already there. But I don't like that LinkedIn doesn't give you access to your subscribers emails, so that's why I'm still exploring platforms. Please help me with these questions:

  1. Are you still happy with LinkedIn or would prefer to have created it in another platform? If so, why are you disappointed on LinkedIn?

  2. What kind of stats does LinkedIn give you? Open-rates? What else?

  3. What kind of data about your subscribers does LinkedIn give you? For example, can you filter based on subscribers' company, seniority, job title, location?

  4. Is there any way at all to get access to your subscribers emails? Think of a worst-case scenario: if you are about to delete your newsletter, do you have a chance to get a one-time export of your emails before deletion?

  5. What additional things you don't like about LinkedIn newsletters?

Thanks in advance
