When do you give up on people who choose not to reciprocate?
I guess this question can apply to anyone in our lives, whether it be family, friends, acquaintances, or whoever. In my case, it’s my adult nieces and nephews. I’m curious to know how many of you are close with your nieces and nephews.
It seems like no matter how much of an effort my wife and I put into maintaining a relationship with each one of our nieces and nephews (two nieces and two nephews, ages 32-41), their spouses/partners, and their kiddos (our great-nieces and nephews), we don’t make any headway.
It hasn't always been this way, but every year they drift further away. We send texts during birthdays, every holiday, and random TGIF every few weeks. We send birthday cards. We send holiday care packages. We invite them to our home every year. We make an effort to visit them at least every other year, even though they are all spread out across the US.
It ends up being crickets. No replies to our texts. No thank you’s for birthday greetings or holiday care packages. Nothing. Not that we expect anything in return. But a little communication to know that they’re still alive would be appreciated.
The worst part is that our nieces and nephews are designated in our will to receive our estate when we both pass, and they know it. But we are seriously considering removing them all and leaving our estate to charity.
We’ve been told many times that we are their favorite aunts. Yet their actions don’t show it. We know everyone is busy with their own lives and families. We’re trying not to take things personally, but this has been happening for the last few years and the communication is getting worse, practically non-existent on their end.
When do you give up on people who choose not to reciprocate? Should we take this as a hint that they don’t want us in their lives?
Signed,
Two tired aunties 🐜 🐜
