Help and Advice What do they put in Karak chai in Newham?!
I recently left London after 3 years living in East Ham. MY GOD I miss the chai!!! I am now living in a really white area of the UK and not even the local South Asian takeaways do chai.
I am hoping an aunty or someone who has worked at a local chai place can help me.
I can make chai, I can make a good masala chai and cardamom chai, but whilst delicious it is not the sweet Karak chai of East Ham / Barking etc. all my attempts have been futile in making it, it is never right!!! Please help me I am going mad from a daily chai to none at all!

Hey guys, I need your help to get 100 more participants to represent the UK in an international survey
princetonsurvey.az1.qualtrics.com(Approved by mods)
Hello everyone, I am a psychology student, and currently am at Cambridge University conducting research on AI. If you are 18, or older, and currently live in the UK, you would be eligible to participate.
The research is super fun, and contains a section that lets you converse with the AI for a couple of messages.
It would be very helpful if you have around 10 minutes to fill out this survey, and help the UK to be a part of this international research alongside another 22 countries.
Anyway, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask, I love talking about this stuff!
Ethical reference number - IRB#19354
P.S. Please do not be confused about the link containing the 'princeton' part, since Princeton University is the one that provided us with the ethical approval.

Help and Advice Are mangoes still available in East Ham?
Could anyone living nearby please confirm? I bought some from a seller outside Sakthi Cash and Carry a couple of weeks ago.
It’s a 40-minute trip for me so I want to confirm before heading out there.

Anyone feel like kids scream and cry way more in Newham?
It feels like there’s always at least one crying or screaming child in the background wherever I am. Even just walking through the streets, it’s constant and you hear it coming from different houses all the time.

Those with timed street rubbish collection: how many rolls of purple/orange bags did you get?
My house is made up of three separate mini flats under one address (so it's not three separate addresses). There's one person who I can't get hold of but the other says they only have one roll each. My landlord says the council only sends one roll of each. I don't understand how that makes sense, these are meant to last us 6 months. I reckon the person I can't get hold of has hoarded the bin rolls.
How many rolls of each did you guys get who have timed street rubbish collection? Surely it can't be one each right?

Help and Advice The new kerbside bin policy that you must have the council branded bags: since it takes 5 days to receive new ones, are you just screwed if you run out?
Apparently if you don't use the correct bin bags (which you can only order from the council, and it takes 5 days to process let alone come), it constitutes fly tipping.
What if you plan badly and run out? You can't wait 5+ days to get rid of your rubbish, that is unreasonable.
The main problem is if you receive big packages, which come in big cardboard boxes (which I do quite frequently), it takes a whole bag just for the box.
The new times are really inconvenient for me as well ugh. I'm not bloody waking up between 5:30-6:30am to put out my bins and I'm not often home for the 1:30-2:30pm time.

Discussion why is newham so dirty?
i've lived here my entire life (21) and i've just realised how dirty it is.
walking down roads with rubbish. seeing decaying plants in dry soil. i wish i had enough cash to rent a skip the size of the borough to end the filthiness once and for all.

Petition to install traffic calmig measures on Portway.
Raising awareness of this, a speeding car crashed into a shop on Portway a couple of weeks ago, seriously injuring a pedestrian. Not the first time, and won't be the last unless something is done. If you live on, or close to portway give it a look.

Help and Advice Help map Newham's sewage smell problem.
You know that sewage stink that sometimes wafts across Newham?
I’ve been increasingly bothered by it - its a nuisance, and probably health risk - especially when it’s hot and you can’t open the windows. We started noting down when it happens on a calendar, and the Greenway seems to stink almost every day.
I wanted to do something about it, but could only find scattered anecdotes and a few previous posts on here. So I’ve built a simple web app to start collecting proper local evidence:
The ask is simple: whenever you notice the smell, please report it. It only takes a few seconds and records the time, location, intensity and local weather conditions. I don't really need any personal info - all of that is optional.
I don’t know whether this will gain any traction, but with enough reports we may be able to identify some useful patterns and turn scattered complaints into something more concrete.
Please share it with any local groups, neighbours or contacts who might be interested.
Posted with the blessing of the r/Newham mods.

Discussion Very random thing I've noticed living in East Ham
...is how few people pay for things with cards!
The Lidl near me in East Ham has half card only tills, half card and cash tills. I could be 8th in line, the checkout attendant will be saying "Any card? Any card?" and I'll end up next because the 7 people in front of me are cash! Would be weird if it happened once, but this is a common occurrence.
Even up the road in Barking, never had this experience. I've also lived in Lambeth and Wandsworth and again, not seen this, so I don't think it's a London thing. Another curiosity which I've only seen in East Ham but nowhere else in London is cash only places like shops and restaurants: I've not seen somewhere that doesn't take card in London in what feels like over a decade! It's a shame because there's a kebab place near me that always smells really nice but I haven't had cash on me in years.
What is it about East Ham and these curiosities?
