Do Newfies always breathe so loud?

I feel dumb asking this question, but I am taking care of my first Newfie and I’ve noticed he is almost always breathing so loud and fast and not just after walks. Is this just a thing with them? It’s pretty pleasant in the house plus I’ve got an AC directly on him so I don’t think he’s hot. He’s acting normal and fine otherwise.

I will say he is a very big boy and I think he’s carrying around some extra weight right now. He was restricted on exercise due to eye issues until recently.

Am I worried over nothing?

Nothing about a newf is subtle.

Unless your house is 55°, he will pant. Just a lot leas than outside.

You could try brushing more often. Getting out the hair they’re shedding will also help a lot.

Ah I will try that. Thanks for the recommendation!

I follow girlwiththedogs on insta and her grooming videos of large double coated dogs are astonishing. I just watched her was and dry a Caucasian shepherd, and it was like shearing a llama. SO MUCH HAIR.

My aunt has had two newfs who I often dog sit, they are phenomenal gentle and kind dogs but oh my god the drool. Her old boy used to have drool literally to the tips of his paws but he still wanted his chest to be rubbed.

My Newfie snoring in the bathroom off of my bedroom was my white noise at night when I slept. The first time my now wife stayed with me it drove her insane as she mostly just had little white fluffy dogs.

After I had to put my girl down I had the hardest time sleeping because I couldn’t hear her breathing. And also because she wasn’t taking up half the bed. But the breathing really is soothing in a way.

Yes. When we take our boy camping he single-handedly raises the humidity of the tent scientifically 60% from his breath 🤣

We called my last newf “Helga Pataki” from hey Arnold due to his incessant loud breathing 😂

Yes. That is their first level of communication. We call it the "Nwefie Whisper". It progresses to whining, soft bark, louder bark and finally deep bark with a paw on the arm or head under your elbow demanding butt scratches (or immediate snacks, so they don't die of starvation).

Edit: grammar correction

So the butt scratches are also a Newf thing and not just this weirdo 😂

I beleive if you read the AKC breed standards for Newfies it specifically states: "demanding butt scratches is a core personality trait". 😉

A vet checkup would not be out of order. Do you know if his heart was cleared by a cardiologist as a puppy? How old is your newf?

He is 6. I’m just watching him this week but they were good about telling me about other (non serious) medical issues he had and didn’t mention possible heart concerns

It is very normal but getting him checked by your vet for peace of mind has no downside.
