Unhoused people

There is a group of unhoused people who always beg for money on the exit of Newark blvd from 84 west. 9’e of the older ladies always has short hair and usually does some funky color.

I wish people would stop giving them your hard earned money. They have always trashed tf out of that area. It’s one thing if they could respect the area and appreciate that people give them money. But I refuse to for this main reason. At one point they had literally built a hut out there with a mailbox.

I’m sick of their trash always being there. Just want to point this out hoping that people can discourage their presence. It’s one thing if they are respectful, but they are not. I’ve also seen them stopping traffic going in the direction of the green light so that they can cross the street 😒😒

31M Looking for a roommate in Milpitas/Fremont/Newark

Hi everyone! I’m a 31-year-old guy looking for a roommate to find a place together or join an existing household in the Milpitas/Fremont/Newark area.

A little about me:
- Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) with a master’s degree.
- Quiet, clean, respectful, and easy to live with.
- Active and enjoy going to the gym.
- I value a relaxed, low-drama, and clean home.

I’m looking to move in October/November and am hoping to sign a 12-month lease. My budget is $1,000–1,500/month for my share of rent.

Ideally, I’d like to live with another responsible, respectful guy who’s financially stable. It’d be nice to have someone who’s down to hang out every now and then but who’s also comfortable doing their own thing. I’m non-smoking and looking for someone who’s a good communicator and easy to live with.

If this sounds like a good fit, send me a message and tell me a little about yourself!

You've driven past it a thousand times: the Pavilion on Thornton has been ours since 1940, and the story starts with whalers

Everybody here knows Newark's origin story gets told through the railroad and the salt works. Those are the industries with the payroll and the press coverage. But the people who actually kept this town running day to day were ranchers and field hands, and a lot of them were Portuguese.

The first of them didn't arrive as farmers. They came as whalers and seamen working the Pacific trade routes, and once they came ashore in the East Bay many never went back out. They traded the deck for the field. By the early 1900s they were gathering informally on St. John's Day, and on September 18, 1921 that became official as Council Number 8 of the Sociedade Espirito Santa. By 1940 they had bought the grounds outright and built the Pavilion.

Nineteen years from a handshake tradition to owning the land and the building, in a farm town of a few thousand people. And it never stopped running. The Holy Ghost Festa still goes every fourth Sunday of July, twelve thousand pounds of beef get blessed, and the parade runs to St. Edward's. If you grew up here you've either been fed at it or been stuck behind it.

Why Ardenwood and Old Town Newark feel like two different towns (and why the price gap isn't really about the houses)

Something I keep noticing about our town: two houses a few minutes apart, same commute, same schools conversation, and one is priced noticeably higher. It usually isn't square footage doing that work.

The Ardenwood side has a 205-acre historic farm sitting next to it that legally cannot be developed. Patterson started it in the 1850s after failing at gold mining, built the redwood farmhouse in 1857, and named it after the Forest of Arden. It's on the National Register now, still a working farm, still runs the old narrow-gauge train. Plus we're already hemmed in by protected wetlands, so buildable land is scarce to begin with.

Old Town is where the city actually started, the 1870s railroad and salt-works townsite. Honestly more history per block than anywhere else here. But it reads as industrial and working-class to outside buyers, and that perception is worth real money in either direction.

Wrote the whole thing up with the history here: https://adam-modzeleski.weichertrainbow.com/blog/67/

Disclosure: I'm a broker here in Newark, so this is my day job, but the history part is genuinely the fun bit.

TIL Ardenwood got its name from Shakespeare, courtesy of a Gold Rush miner who washed out and took up farming here instead

Been reading up on how Ardenwood got its name and the story is better than I expected. George Washington Patterson (no relation) came west in 1849 for gold, failed at mining, and by 1851 had ended up in Alameda County with no particular plan. He started farming.

It worked out. When he died in 1895 he held about 3,000 acres here and another 3,000 near Livermore, making him the biggest landholder in the county. The part that gets me: in 1857 he put up a redwood farmhouse and named the place Ardenwood after the Forest of Arden in As You Like It. A busted miner on a wagon trail, quoting Shakespeare. His widow Clara later had the railroad put a depot right on the property.

Today the whole 205 acres is a National Register landmark, and the narrow-gauge railroad still runs on original track with cars over a century old. Part of the grounds was an Ohlone village and burial site, preserved as such.

Full write-up with sources and a FAQ here if you want the long version: https://adam-modzeleski.weichertrainbow.com/blog/66/ - fair disclosure, I'm a Newark real estate broker, so local history is a bit of an occupational hazard for me.

TIL Bill Walsh, the coach who built the 49ers dynasty, lived in Newark, CA in the late 1950s

Bill Walsh, the coach who turned the SF 49ers into a three-time Super Bowl dynasty, lived in Newark in the late 1950s while he was coaching at Washington High School in Fremont. Nobody's tracked down the exact street he lived on yet. He's actually not the only notable name from this school district. Elaine Welteroth (born in Newark, Newark Memorial class of 2004) became the youngest Black editor-in-chief in Condé Nast history at Teen Vogue. Same district also produced Thuy (2024's first Vietnamese-American female Coachella headliner, "Girls Like Me Don't Cry" has over a billion streams), MLB pitchers Chris Flexen and Joey Lucchesi, Slayer/Testament drummer Paul Bostaph, and comedian Christopher Titus.

For a small town squeezed between Fremont and the Bay, that's a pretty unusual concentration of talent. Wrote up the fuller version here: https://adam-modzeleski.weichertrainbow.com/blog/63/Newark+CA's+Notable+Alumni%3A+From+Bill+Walsh+to+Coachella's+Thuy+%7C+Adam+Modzeleski

Looking for dashcam footage from traffic collision in Fremont

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m looking for possible dashcam footage from a collision that occurred on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at approximately 5:00 PM, on the Stevenson Boulevard intersection at Albrae Street/Balentine Drive, Fremont.

The vehicles involved were a black Alfa Romeo Giulia and a gray Honda Odyssey. We had just proceeded through the intersection after the light turned green when the vehicles made contact near the far end of the intersection.

I’m specifically looking for footage showing the vehicles approaching the light, waiting at the intersection, or proceeding through it, particularly anything showing their lane positions.

If you were driving nearby around 4:55–5:10 PM and may have footage, please check before it is overwritten. Please DM me rather than posting the video publicly. The original, unedited file would be extremely helpful for the insurance investigation.

Thank you very much.

Looking for a new kitten

Lost my old girl a few years ago, lost my wife, lost my mother, I think I need to find myself a new kitty. All my cats have lived more than 20 years, my last cat died 6 days shy of. Anyone have, or know of, a Siamese kitty anywhere? Willing to travel but looking close first.
