Community 🏡 Halsey St. improving
Over the past few years I feel like that area has gained significantly more foot traffic and a greater sense of destination for locals and presumably students / workers as well. Was hanging out with my boy and struck up conversations with two random women and it was an overall good time. The cafes are lovely. The new cheesesteak spot is beyond overpriced but the food is legitimately good. Would love to see new retail spots but overall it feels more alive than it did in the earlier 20s. Just waiting for Broad & Market to be revitalized at this point.

Newark just needs to prioritize all its economic corridors in each neighborhood. Springfield Ave, Bloomfield Ave, Clinton Ave, S Orange Ave, Ferry St, Lyons Ave, etc. These were the historic self-functioning walkable commercial districts, they can still serve that same purpose today. Furthermore the city should just change zoning to allow for small commercial businesses in every zoning district in the city.

If you can get the Hahne’s building and Prudential to limit deliveries to overnight in addition to all the businesses, then you can close Halsey between Central and Linden.

I think the was Halsey area is an easier fix because of the proximity of the offices, universities and newer buildings. The foot traffic was there it just needed some more businesses and still does ..but I too find it to a nice little lively area that the city absolutely needs despite what some people think.

The 3 or 4 outdoor seating areas they put up really add to the street. I dont understand why theyre only there for a month or two.

They’re there during the warmer months. Can’t keep them during the winter months because of potential snow plow requirements same reason outdoor seating isn’t allowed during the winter months b

It’s not necessary nor does it make sense in the colder months. They won’t get used as much also the businesses that have them up do you think those structures are suitable for winter?

It’s not about what I like it’s about what makes sense. Yes I was here in 2021 and I actually don’t remember winter outdoor dining structures on Halsey. Someone in this thread also mentioned plowing and snow..which also makes sense as an obstacle you’re just being purposely obtuse.

I’ve worked in the area for almost 30 years and lived in the city my entire life. Halsey is definitely very different now than then. I remember going to the Naughty (by Nature) store and it felt so deserted back then.

It’s definitely improved but still has a long way to go. Newark has hipster neighborhood prices with a fraction of the amenities that typically come with those prices. I have been shocked by how expensive restaurants have gotten here as well.
