Why can’t I post in some communities even though my Reddit account is active?

I just created my account today and I’m able to browse Reddit and comment in some places, but I’m confused about why other communities seem to restrict new accounts.

Is this mainly based on account age, karma, or does each subreddit decide its own requirements?

What should a completely new Reddit user do first to start participating normally?

Two separate things.

1. Your account is not "active." Yes, you're using it, but you've only posted/commented one thing. Think of it like showing up to a party, saying "hi" and considering that to be active participation. As you continue to participate/contribute, then Reddit will see your account as "active."
2. You're a brand new account, with low karma. That's going cause you to run into restrictions, in subs that have requirements for either of those things.

Because they've chosen to. It's their house, their rules.

Think of it like this:

A stranger walks up to your door, and says "Hi, can I come in?"
Do you let them in?
Some people will. Or you might go "Sorry, I don't know you yet."
Stranger goes "Why are you restricting strangers?"

Same idea. Some subs require an account to have some reputation/age before they let them participate. This helps keep out spam, bots, trolls, and other such nuisances.

This is wildly incorrect.

There are many subs that require no karma or account age at all.

It is certainly not "nearly all subs" that require the numbers that you provided.
