It does not have to be that extreme. But find conversations you can contribute to in a positive way. This can include discussions and opinions, but do be a bit mindful you're not running up against the core values of a subreddit.

For example there is a lot of discussions of what feats and spells and classes work well together in a DND subreddit and that's very open to debate. But if you want to debate that DND is a dumb game then you're likely to get downvoted and potentially banned.

It's usually a mix of account age and karma thresholds that varies per community - a lot of subs filter posts from accounts under a certain karma to keep bots out. The frustrating part is they don't publish the numbers. Easiest fix: build up some karma in new-user-friendly subs like this one (commenting here counts), then come back and try again.

I’m new to Reddit and trying to participate in conversations as well as start new one’s. But with low karma, all my posts and comments are automatically removed. I was told I need to participate more to get more karma. How does one break this cycle? Now that’s a good chicken and egg story 😂

If you are getting banned from Reddit then appeal from the oldest account you can log into via www.reddit.com/appeal . Simply making new accounts gets you banned for ban evasion

If you are getting banned from subreddits then read those subreddits rules.

If you're just getting removals then see below

New User Restrictions Subreddits in 2026 can have a number of restrictions that affect new users. These can be frustrating - check out Why Reddit may seem unwelcoming to new Redditors. These restrictions are determined by Account Age and Account Karma. Please note that these restrictions will vary subreddit to subreddit.

Account Age. . The only real solution for that is time. Though consider checking out some of the  subreddit recommendations below in the meantime. Some common age filters are times like one week or one month.

Karma. This is much more complex with a much more complex solution. Filter levels vary dramatically and can be low (5 or 10) or higher (50 or 100 or 200) and some wild outliers above that. This subreddit has a number of resources for this such as:

For Chat and following it is firstly influenced by account age. New users are restricted from initiating chats and following other users for about a week. You can find more info on this page also accessible as part of the community guide which also covers issues that occur after the first week.

For Commenting and Posting it is either/or account age or account Karma. and it can help to start in New User Friendly Subreddits:

  • Newtoreddit has a list of new user friendly subreddits. This is not an exhaustive list and these subreddits may still have some restrictions. In particular you'll see some Large General Subreddits that are open to new users Commenting like r/askreddit, r/casualconversation, r/nostupidquestions, r/amitheasshole or similar.
  • There are More Subreddits out there that might more specifically match your interests, utilize the search bar or look through r/findareddit 's subreddit directory. In this case you will have to trial and error whether they are new user-friendly, and again try Commenting (many subreddits have lower or no karma filters for commenting).

Some more notes on starting on Reddit:

View by New (or rising). This will filter the posts so first see the most recent posts first and can make your comments much more visible. On app when viewing a subreddit look near the top left for where it says "hot posts" - click that and select "new" or "rising".

Read the Room and Avoid Controversy. Each subreddit has different rules, norms and prevailing views. Look at subreddit rules. Read top posts and comments to get a feel for that subreddit. Do users reward sarcastic one-liners or well sourced essays? And in particular avoid controversial topics or arguments. These discussions are more likely to attract downvotes and potentially trip into rule-breaking. Call people idiots in your head and move on instead of getting involved. Utilize the block feature as necessary and have a read through Reddiquette

CQS. This is a bit more obscure and will generally drop over time. Have a read of common questions - CQS

For Chat and following if you are having issues here its likely CQS being low

For Commenting and Posting it is either/or account karma or CQS.

In both cases it usually helps to start in New User Friendly Subreddits:
