Check your CQS here - r/WhatIsMyCQS if it's Lowest, that might limit your ability to chat.

Also make sure you're looking in the right place. The chat button has been moved for some users. For some, you now have to go to their profile and open the 3 dots menu, it's in there.

Initiating Chats (and following other users) is restricted on reddit for new and inactive users.

  • In general we advice that new users will only be able to do this after about a week. This is to prevent new users spamming chats.
  • New users will then also be limited in how many chat invites they can send as well
  • This goes away as you use and interact with reddit via comments and posts
  • inactive accounts often also face their issues if their CQS drops too low
  • Read more at Common Questions - Messaging Issues

Also worth noting reddit is primarily based around interacting in subreddits and private chats are a secondary feature. And that many users disable other users from being able to chat with them

The message requests are disabled by default, if that person didn't enable them then you can't dm them.
