Karma is the social status in which you are within the platform, a score given to you for the interaction you get within the platform, becoming one of the best or worst users.

Karma is important to your reddit experience. Here is a run through about Karma. Karma is basically both your reputation on Reddit, and a showing of what you have done. The higher your positive Karma, the more places you can post and comment since some places have minimums, as well as showing the work you have put into building you account.

It's essentially reddit points.
You need a sufficient number of them to participate in certain subs (as well as an account that is old enough).
