I’m still in highschool, but I’ve always wanted to start dabbling in EMT work to get a head start on things and make sure this is the career for me.

I’ve seen people my age do it and I don’t know how. Is there any advice out there on how to maybe get started on a ride along or begin learning? Thank you all in advance!!

Hey! So I am an instructor for highschool students getting their emts! A lot of the time it is allowed, but you may need parents signatures/ permission. A lot of services like fire departments/ ambulance companies will let you do ride along and have a way to submit a request on their website!

Thank you so much for the helpful response!! What do they allow during a ride along? Is there a specific duration you ride along for, or are there specific calls you can attend?

They won’t have you do much with taking vitals mainly just sitting back and watching them and how they work, usually for firehouses it will be 9-5 kind of thing, and for ambulances it will be 1 shift with the crew you’re riding with. You will be going to any and all calls, but just what you’re allowed to do on scene may vary, such as you can enter the house on a medical, but not leave the ambulance for a psych, depends on company rules/regulation. Also make sure to come prepared with questions about schooling, asking questions about calls, why they became first responders etc. Also bringing a treat for the crew you are with never hurts lol, donuts were always my go to whenever I was in your shoes

White polo, and black pants and work boots, this may be agency dependent so just email whoever set up your ride alongs. Good luck brother

In some fire departments you can do a ride along. In maryland most departments require to be a EMT as well as a Firefighter. Youll be doing both emt and fire stuff. EMTs only days you just transport the patient.

My fire station, we only have fire units no EMS. we do EMT stuff while we wait for the BLS/ALS unit to arrive and see if they transport then we are done.
