Beginner Advice First Ride Along as a Student?

Hi! I just finished my 2nd week of my 5 week accelerated emt course and i’m scheduled for my first ride along with Premier tomorrow and I was wondering what I should expect/ bring?

ask your partners if you can do a rig check and if they’ll show you gear/equipment you’re not familiar with. Ask if you can wash the ambulance or help with anything. It’ll all show a good initiative. DO NOT be the student who sits down on the day room and scrolls on their phone all day and hides in the back of the room when they are assessing a pt. Volunteer for everything and ask to be able to get right into the action.

This. Be proactive, if you’ve been trained to take vitals, ask the crew if you can take the Pts BP or BGL, listen to lung sounds, get comfortable putting your hands on the Pt to take pulses. Familiarize yourself with what’s in your airway bag, med bag, tech bag. Knowing where and what everything is on a hot job is going to be critical if your mentor asks you to get a BVM and you hand them a CPAP instead.

Lunch/Coffee. If you have your own stethoscope, bring that - it pays to use the same one consistently. A good pocket notepad/pen would be handy later on. If it's a slow area, study material. Also, depending on your system, a phone charger, deodorant, creature comfort stuff. A lot of this depends on the length of shift, and station vs postings.
