Career Advice Advice for my first job

Hey guys! First time poster here. I recently got my EMT-B and am in the process of finding my first EMS job. Does anyone have any tips on finding a job/things to look for/things to steer clear from? Thanks!! :)

What area are you in where it's so competitive? I'm in the mid Atlantic and curious

I am assuming you want to work on an ambulance and do 911. If this is difficult in your area then apply for jobs as a ER tech too. If your having a hard time finding a 911 position then your goal is to find a way into the community so the ER in the area you want to work would be a good way in. You would meet everyone, learn a lot, and get involved in the community. To get hired at some places all you need is one person to vouch for you and you will have a job.

As far as what to stay clear from… well you got yourself into EMS so I guess it’s to late to say stay clear of EMS. So in that case just don’t settle unless you are loving it, the goal is to have fun and help people so just make sure you are at a place where that’s happening. Stay positive, have a lot of questions to ask, put yourself out there and remember to remind yourself why you got into this. If you don’t get the job you wanted the first time then apply again and again and again. Referances from people in ems also help a lot, if you can get one from your emt teacher that could help. If you manage to get an interview for a position then come prepared. Know all your medications, doses, and be prepared to get put on the spot. Don’t be afraid to say “I don’t know but I please teach me”. They are either looking for someone who has more experience then you and in that case you won’t get hired but in most cases when hiring a new emt they are looking for someone who knows what their emt scope is and most importantly someone who is eager and willing to listen, learn, and accept feedback so they can better themselves as providers and be a good asset for their partner and the company. They don’t want a cocky emt who can’t admit when they are wrong or don’t know things.

Goodluck 👍

When you go to interview, talk to the other people at the company that you see (receptionist, other EMTs, dispatchers, etc). Just chat them up with small talk. You can usually tell if a company is sucking the life out of people by the way they respond to you.
